Nestling at the bottom of Arthur's Seat, in Duddingston, this pub is the perfect antidote to the hustle of Edinburgh's city centre - especially at this time of year. In its long history, it counts Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots among its visitors and is a real, proper Edinburgh institution. Off the beaten track, perhaps, but as close to a country pub you get in the city.

Avoid this pub like the plague. The food is rubbish, the staff arrogant and inefficient and all the locals give it a wide berth. But if you like candles on the tables and pictures of Churchill (well-known Scot) on the walls then this is for you.
We couldn't agree more with Gareth the first reviewer. We love this pub and only started to return after the rubbernecking and rude "locals" mentioned by the second "reviewer" were finally pushed out by the new management. It's the friendly pub that it once was and has become something of a vilage pub again; something that's very hard to find in a city these days. So if you haven't been for a while because the last time you were there you were made to feel uncomfortable by the whispers and stares from the regulars who once propped up the bar go back now and ring in the changes.
I couldn't agree more, we just spent a lazy afternoon there playing Scrabble and drinking hot toddies in front of the fire. Check out their website for a bit of history. www.sheepheid.co.uk
My friends and I love this pub, particularly after we have climbed Arthur's Seat. The heat from the fire, the comfy leather armchair, the contented feeling after a hearty feed and several malts, I could quite happily live here. I just wish it was a little closer to home so I could roll back there after a great night. If you only visit one pub in Edinburgh you should make it The Sheep Heid!Send your feedback or queries to been.there@guardian.co.uk
