Fantasy-like love nest hotel snuggled into the castle. It's unbelievably camp and over the top with roll-top baths, bizarre mix of busts and antiques, four-poster beds, and it just feels so unique and so sexy. Daily bottle of champagne helps, and there's great food in the Secret Garden. Not cheap, but worth it for a night of unbridled passion.

My husband and i went to the witchery for our anniversary last year ... i have always wanted to go.... and it was very disappointing. The room was gothic and striking but very small, the food was totally average (my vege option actually pretty bad) and the croissants in our breakfast the next day were stale - not what you expect for a total bill of £450. OK the setting on the Royal Mile is good, but I think this is a case of the place's reputation being steeped in myth rather than reality. Since we went, loads of folk have said ' oh yes.... wouldn't eat there...' sorry to put a downer on things...
