    La Flamenca

    Posted by ST14 16 August 2006

La Flamenca is fantastic. As you walk down the winding steps into the vaults it's like walking into Spain. The tapas is great (spinach and chickpeas is amazing). I've been told the paella is fab too, and it certainly looks it. At the tapas bar you sit on stools with high barrels for tables. A must if you adore Spanish food, and very reasonable: two people, several dishes and a number of beers cost £24!

Like walking into Spain!? It's cold! The previous review is clearly written by someone who has never been to Spain. As a Bath resident (and as someone who has eaten the spinach and chickpeas on offer), don't bother (and don't bother with La Tasca either).

The walk down to La Flamenca was indeed FANTASTIC. However, it was also very deceiving. We were sat down and given a limited, yet quite tasty looking, tapas menu. Our drink orders were taken promptly and all went downhill.

Drinks began coming out after about 10-15 minutes (there were two other tables) as there were 6 of us, it took about 25 minutes in total to get them all. We then ordered two dishes each, and as we were hungry olives and "home bread" which we were only allowed to order one of at a time because it would "be too much", between 6 hungry adults. Home bread turned out to be a stale baguette. Olives turned out to be hard green budget olives with the stones left in for our pleasure.

The only thing available to moisten the bread was oil and vinegar. So to my left began passing the condements around and I was last, seeing everyone pour the vinegar straight onto the bread I took a more "pour and dunk" aproach. BUT, before I could finish pouring, out came an dead fly with it.

I looked around to see if I should tell my eating friends and thought maybe it was on the plate... until I looked in the bottle. There were at least 10 flies in the bottom. Whilst trying to get the waitresses attention away from chatting up some men, we noticed an ant crawling across out table.

I couldn't help but think, if that's what they show, what's behind the scenes? The waitress finally came over and said "that came out of the vinegar did it?" in rather accusing tones. Until we pointed out his several other family members rotting in the bottom. Her only comment was "sorry to gross you out before you eat".

When the food came we were already quite suspicious of what was going to turn up. I do have to say that the Calamari was good, but the other dishes were distinctly average, you might even complain if a parent served you them.

Chicken garlic style consisted of chopped overcooked chicked, probably out-of-the-freezer roast potatoes and a liquid. However, no garlic.

Desserts are attrocious. The truffle with cream and a caramel sauce first apealed to me - until i found out what it was: "sort of metled chocolate, with like some like cream on top and like a caramel sauce on the side... sort of. Well maybe more lke a chocolate sauce or ... no. I don't know it's hard to explain"

From this I deduced it was 3 different flavoured liquids. So we went to Sainsburys bought some puddings and that was the best part of the meal!
