    Matt & Phredd's

Posted by owltoucan 9 September 2006

Matt & Phredds is an excellent jazz bar on Tib Street with live jazz every day (except maybe Monday). It has a wide range of European beers and international wines as well as really nice food - Middle Eastern style - pittas, olives etc as well as pizzas and various other snacks.

To get there head north along church street and go right at the intersection with Tib street, it's a black door on the right.

I love the idea of a jazz bar that has live jazz every night and I like this Tibb Street/Bohemian side of Manchester, however I had 3 bad experiences here when a great jazz saxophonist Rod Mason played as it was full of people talking and eating pizza and NOT at ALL listening to the music - either open a pizza restaurant OR a jazz club, or work at separating the Hen night brigade from the music lovers! - When I went they had placed a table of pre-booked hen night girls right next to the stage! they didn't stop shouting and the band had to ask them to be quiet - how ridiculous is that? It was also very smokey too and noisy - jazz bar for music lovers - or All Bar One? - you can't mix both and this needs to be addressed especially if they are advertising serious music as a prime focus.

My girlfriend took me out one day with the intention to dump me and we stumbled across this place. As she broke the bad news i simply didn't care, the music was too good! Also she had a face like a squashed mouse..

everything's pretty expensive (does no-one mention price on this site!?), and if you're taking a lady down, don't ask for the 'cheapest bottle of wine' or you'll get snide coments. This was unrelated to the break up.

    probably.

    still, nice place.
