Take it from a local and a curryphile, the curry mile has gone way downhill in recent years. I'm not naming any names (Shere Khan, Shezan, Royal Naz) or divulging their sins (poor service, reports of infestations, hygiene issues, meat and fish not being what it says on the tin, sauces that have come straight from a tin), suffice to say that the restaurants on the curry mile have been living off their reputations for a while now, and while that might do for undiscerning students, drunks and one-off visitors who won't come back anyway, if you want a decent curry head down to Burton Road in West Didsbury.
Two of the best are the "Great Kathmandu" and the "Gurkha Grill", or if you are feeling adventurous and fancy a curry lunch, seek out "This 'n' That" on Soap Street in the city centre, their rice and three is a local institution and probably the best food you'll find in the UK for around the 3 quid mark.

I agree, I've been eating there for about 20 years. The Nehari on Sunday is the best I've tasted (no brains though).
I take your point. Curry in Manchester is not just about Rusholme, and hasn't been for a long time now. A agree with your recommendation about the Gurkha, but it is also possible to still get a good curry in Rusholme still: try the Darbar or Lal Haweli.
I agree with the tip about the Great Katmandu (Burton Road, West Didsbury). It's one of the best in the UK.
Also worth mentioning East Z East, probably the best curry house in Manchester city centre - and only a couple of pounds more expensive than Rusholme. It's located under Ibis Hotel, Princess Street, M1 7DL. And Shimla Pinks (Crown Square, Manchester, M3 3HA) has a good reputation as another upmarket alternative.
Yep, Rusholme is now pretty dire. I personally think the Katmandhu has gone off the boil a bit as well, although it's still not bad. My faves are the Third Eye in Didsbury Village (owned by the same people as the Katmandhu I believe) and East z East in town on Princess St although the music can be too loud. Ackbars near the Science Museum is also excellent.
