One is the high tea at the Shangri-La hotel. Sit and gorge in decadent surroundings in three hour sittings. Waitresses indulge your every whim, there's over 100 teas to choose from, and a seemingly endless choice of food. From Chinese roast pork to Scottish smoked salmon via sushi and a wicked dessert trolley, beware...you will need the rest of the weekend to recover!

The other is the Col bar, a former officer's mess and much more low-key. Perfect for homesick comfort food like sausages, beans and chips, and set in a lovely rural setting (well, by Singaporean standards!). Cheap, fun and great for families.

Absolutely agree with you on the Colbar. It's one of my favourites but it has moved. It was pulled down to make way for a freeway. Amazingly, due to public outcry (yes it can happen here) the Colbar was dismantled and rebuilt further up the road. It's now at Whitchurch Rd (still off Portsdown Rd) and is still run by old Mr & Mrs Lim. It's now in an even better setting than before. Chicken curry is worth a try. You get boneless breast every time.

The buffet at Shangri-La is called The Line. Nice decor and relaxed atmosphere. About 16 different kitchens preparing various international cuisines. Desserts, sushi and seafood are the main draws.

Lunchtime sittings cost 45/48 SGD weekday/weekend. Not totally sure about dinner, I think it was about S$70. I think for Sunday lunch, you can pay about S$95 to include champagne. Also, Thursday nights are seafood buffet, recommended by my cousins who are regulars (S$90).

We went for lunch as a party of 13 and got vouchers worth about S$80 to spend at the Shangri-La on another occasion.
