This hostel in London is amazing. Beautifully surrounded by gardens and outside space which you don't usually get with hostels especially in central London. It's spacious, clean and the staff are so helpful and friendly. I stay there again and again.

Does what it says on the tin! Mike is a real character, and we stayed several days more than we'd intended - at the very reasonable rate of EUR 20 a night for the two of us. Air con, TV, a little kitchen, a balcony where we ate our breakfast and drank our late night raki ... and visible from the harbour as your ferry comes in.

Very nice hostel on a cool, residential hill (very near Pablo Neruda's house/museum). I think it fits the qualities to be part of the boutique hostel list. It was also chosen as a Lonely Planet tip I think.

I stayed here a few weeks ago and was completely floored by the level of accomodation provided. I stayed here because it was a hostel and I am trying to stretch the pocket book as much as possible theses days, but was blown away by the interior, activities and amazing staff. This is more like a boutique hotel than a hostel, without the sticker shock. Can't recommend enough! Fantastic!

HQ is the best hostel I've stayed in, in my entire life. The design is modern, minimal yet very functional. The hostel provided clean bedsheets, a large pillow and soft duvets. Gym facility and chill-out coffee and waffle bar are a plus. Breakfast and wifi are free. What more can I ask for for US$10/ night? The staff were super friendly and always helpful. Loved every second I spent there and will go back everytime I'm Bangkok.

Palmers Lodge is amazing. First of all, it's an old mansion that has been converted into a hostel. They have private rooms available, but I only stayed in the dorm room and it was unlike any dorm room I've been in. The beds were SOLID wood (no creaky metal), and had curtains which was great for privacy. FREE wifi! FREE breakfast! There's a bar and restaurant downstairs and the staff are pretty helpful. By chance I booked into Palmers Lodge on my first trip to London (they were the top rated hostel in my searches), and I've been back six times now in the last two years. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in London and I can easily recommend it to anyone looking for a place.

It might be a former prison, but the idyllic setting of Langholmen's now pretty posh hostel is a far remove from any institution we'd ever heard of. Staying in the (extensively upgraded) original cells (which sleep up to 4 people) was not only clean and comfortable, but positively deluxe compared to other hostels we'd stayed in across Europe, even coming complete with free wireless web access in all the rooms. Located bang in the heart of Stockholm, we were on top of all the sights and restaurants, though we spent plenty of time on the beach right outside the hostel entrance and exploring the 'jogging' trail. Probably the most unusual and delightful hostel experience ever, and certainly cheap for such accommodation in Scandinavia.

A friend and I were looking for budget accommodation in Prague and stumbled upon 'Miss Sophies'. We booked a twin room for £50 per night which we considered a bargain for such a clean, modern hostel in a great location.

It was everything we needed, with friendly English speaking staff, comfy beds, fantastic modern bathroom and a communal kitchen and lounge in the basement where you could chat and eat with other guests.

I can honestly say Borges Design hostel is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in. It is located in Palermo Soho, the trendiest area of Buenos Aires which is home to a host of boutiques and bustling bars.

After nine months travelling around 11 countries, the hostel was a welcome retreat from other hostels which had looked great on the photos but in reality were run down and dirty.

The communal areas were clean and tidy and the double rooms were spacious and comfy. The breakfast offered a variety which is a rarity in Argentina where most hostels offer a stale bread roll.

The hostel offers excellent value for money and I would recommend the hostel to anyone planning a trip to Buenos Aires.

This is a 'heavenly' boutique hostel for women in 18th century convent in the old Trastevere district of Rome, close to the river Tiber. The old cells are very large, airy, calm, clean, simple and beautifully furnished, and look out onto a peaceful courtyard where you can eat and drink. A restful place, professionally run, and only 25 euros a night for bed and breakfast. A great place for women to stay.

Compared to other hostels around the world I would definitely rate Circus as a boutique hostel. You can choose between dorm style or private rooms. Dorm beds cost from 15€ and are fun if you go with a group (note: no hen or stag parties allowed).

Last time I rented a private room with ensuite bathroom and it was cleaner and bigger than the last expensive hotel room I was in. Rates were about 38€ per night for the private room.

The staff are ever so friendly and speak lots of languages including perfect English. They also have lots of money saving tips for you including a weekend metro card that gets you and a friend unlimited travel on the S and U Bahn.

The hostel is in Mitte which is in central Berlin and therefore not too far from most sights and easy walking distance to funky areas such as Prenzlauer Berg.

Oh, and they do a great all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast for only 5€!

A funky 'hostel' (more like a boutique hotel) bang smack in the middle of Fes Old Town. Rooms are spacious and elegantly-furnished, and the shower room is so fabulous you don't mind sharing it.

There's a roof terrace full of sofas (and even an outdoor shower) and also a very useful kitchen and washing machine. Great breakfast, Wi-Fi, cheap rates.

Just got back from a tour of Thailand and this was the best hostel we stayed in. It calls itself a 'boutique hostel' but it's far cheaper than what Europe charges for a boutique bed - around €9 a night!

There are seven rooms so it's got a real homely atmosphere, and the 100-year-old building is beautiful. Our room was tastefully furnished and there was a peaceful zen-like roof garden.

The staff should get a special mention - the smiliest and friendliest girls I've ever met! It's also a short walk from the center of town. All in all, ideal for backpackers in Bangkok!

Melinda's Garden, Boracay Island. Take yourself to this exclusive island paradise with great restaurants serving everything from Mexican to Korean cuisine, varied nightlife and the stunning mile-stretch of pristine white beach. Melinda's Garden is an upscale cluster of local-style Nipa huts tucked behind the public path that runs alongside the beach. Marble bathrooms, your own private veranda and hammock, set in a mini oasis of a lush filipino garden - you cannot get much more for £10 a night. The sound of the waves and rustling palms will lull you into the most relaxed calm you've felt in years. A steal compared with the over-priced resorts next door. Highly recommended.

It is a really excellent hostel, friendly and simple with delicious home-cooked food every evening by Periklis the owner. It is the perfect place to stay for climbing Mt Olympus, and he will help you with maps and routes. It is also next to the beach and sea. The red wine and open fire are also extremely good. One day we picked olives at the grove down the road in return for food and board.

When times are hard and friends are few, an affordable, yet stylish bolt hole may be the answer.

We’ve just stayed in a hotel in the Hautes Pyrenees in the south west of France that was just that, so much so, that the clientele - some 70% French, come back year after year telling only their closest family and friends.

The secret is that this service orientated business is run not by the French, but by an English couple, and that despite original art and ceramics on show, and very stylish decor both in the rooms and the rest of this lovely hotel, the prices are ‘budget’.

Less than 50 euros per night for half board, this hotel may be in the ‘Rough Guide’ as a selected place to stay and eat, but rough is the last thing it is - yet the label ‘smooth’ isn’t the ticket either.
