Baco y Beto

Posted by petromadrid 20 November 2005

Wonderful wine and tapas bar that is small enough to get to know the owners well and who may even treat you to a glass of cava gratis! The tapas are amazing and the design of the bar is intimate yet light and airy unlike many tapas bars. Very reasonably priced (for a student!).

Freestyle Hostel

Posted by DomCoops 18 November 2005

This is a hostel, somewhat away from the tourist areas but still within easy walking distance of the sights. One of the main attractions was the free breakfast and dinner, with free wine, as well as free internet access. This forces the residents to mingle and make friends and creates a brilliant communal spirit. It is also very colourfully decorated, with decent bunk beds and big lockers (which is useful for backpackers). When I went it was almost entirely filled with Americans, whether that is a good or bad thing is up to you.

It is about 5 minutes from Termini station, on Via Principe Amadeo (I think). Details can be found on hostelbookers.com.

Práce

Posted by JPLC 12 November 2005

'Práce' means work. The only work you'll do here is of the drinking kind. Not the easiest to find, but nothing is with a skinful of Star and Absinth. Table football that no-one seems to mind you slamming your hands on in frustration. Bar staff don't seem to talk but maybe we just couldn;t understand. Mostly a blur. Which is good.

Shoniben Yokocho

Posted by ElaineN 4 November 2005

On the east side of Shinjuku station, to the north of the Odakyu department store, look for the alleyways of Shoniben Yokocho - "Piss Alley"!

Don't let the name put you off - this area has loads of small bars selling yakitori. Choose your own kebabs - chicken, tomatoes, fish, pork, etc and have them barbecued as you listen to the banter from the chefs and barmaids to the passing customers. Beer and lemon bitters to drink with the locals, bags of noise and atmosphere and very cheap!

Kolar Beisl

Posted by mseymour 26 October 2005

Bar in Vienna serving filled Fladenbrote (similar to pitta bread). The original one is in the Kleeblattgasse in the first district though there are now three in total. Walk up to the top of the Graben, turn right, walk along and you'll see the Kleeblattgasse which is a narrow little alley. Mixed clientèle, reasonable prices, dark with loud music. Fladen are great though.

Five Day Lift Pass

Posted by stewart1 25 October 2005

If you buy a five day lift pass it works out far cheaper than any other options available to you. I bought one this summer on a Mountain Biking holidays. It got me to the top of some amazing trails, whilst saving money!

Domaine de la Bastide campsite

Posted by JanetC 23 October 2005

A fairly uninspiring municipal (but privately owned) campsite. It has lots of space and shade; there are no marked pitches and the toilet/shower blocks are rather elderly.

But the little onsite bar/restaurant serves amazing, very reasonable evening meals and breakfasts.

On the N110 road south of Crespian (easily missed - look very hard for the entrance signs)

18th Street Lounge

Posted by KeyPlayer 18 October 2005

The coolest place in DC. A city that is dominated by the University focused area of Georgetown, or the politico hangouts of downtown, this place stands out amongst the crowd. Located just south of Dupont Circle, the club is run by the DJs Thievery Corporation, and they can often be found spinning the decks of their own club.
The drinks are good, the crowd beautiful but friendly, but its the music people come here for. Only downside is getting in. My advice ... Go early!

Simply the best family-run bar in this delightful village that is really the jewel of Valpollicella wine producing region. Beppe Ugolini takes his beer as seriously as they do wine here, but it's really the wine that thrills. It can be enjoyed in typically argumentative and boisterous fashion with a group of locals that make English people very welcome indeed. You can taste real Italian rustic dolce vita and plan your next winery vist with the very farmers that produce the full bodied Amarones and Reciotos for which the region is rightly famous. Plenty of good panini and hot pizzetta are available. Barracca del Beppe with its unpretentious ambience made a welcome stop from wine touring. A visit to Fumane and the surrounding vine-clad lessini mountain foothills are a must if you are holidaying near lake garda or in Verona (both around 18 kilometers away).

Celebrated bar with waiters from the Manzanilla sherry producing town of Sanlucar de Barrameda. Bustling with well-dressed Sevillianos. It serves good fish dishes and manzanilla at just over a euro a glass.

Grand Khan Irish Pub

Posted by JakeMcClure 11 October 2005

Why would you want to come all the way to Ulan Bator, only to end up drinking in an Irish pub? Good point. However this brand new bar is the place to be in Ulan Bator at the moment of writing. Packed every night with excellent live music (not just cover versions of Hotel California), the Irish Pub has very little Irish about it, aside from the token (bad) Guinness. Stick to local beers or indulge in sharing a bottle (or more) of Chinggis Black vodka like the locals. Nice outdoor patio in summer.

Toftagard Vanderheim

Posted by places 3 October 2005

Lovely youth hostel near the coast on the island of Orust. Good accommodation, shared or family rooms (largest about 5 people) in old buildings, or hytter in the garden. Summer restaurant.

Walk down the garden to the sea, or into the village nearby to buy fresh fish, crab or lobster. Alternatively cross the road into the coastal woodland.

There are excellent public transport links to local towns (Ellos, Mollusund and Henan), and ferries to the islands of Gulholmen and Karingdon for swimming, sunbathing, walking and people watching or eating fresh Dublin Bay prawns.

Accessible from Goteborg by public tranport (bus stop 50m). If you arrive late (by car), they will leave your key to collect in the porch. It may be worth getting YHA/HI membership as the supplement for non-members is 45 SEK (£3.50) per night.

bike tours

Posted by appletree86 29 September 2005

When I was in Krakow this summer we took a great bike tour that went around the city, and also to lesser seen parts, like the old Jewish ghetto and Schindler's factory. The guy we went with was great, but I'm sure there are alternative companies who would offer a similar great experience.
