I’ve ridden everywhere from Alaska to New Zealand, but Quinta da Terça in the Azores is the only place I’ve been to three times. The horses are beautiful Lusitanos, the tack is clean and comfortable, and you are encouraged to get stuck in around the stables. My favourite ride is a day trip to Sete Cidades, following the rim of an extinct volcano, with a heart stopping view down to green and blue lakes. Picnic lunch over, there’s a furious gallop along the lake shore. The horses are bomb proof, the scenery is superlative with many extraordinary endemic species to marvel at, and the food and hospitality at the end of the day are second to none. There is so much to do on the island from whale watching to botanical gardens or geyser trips, this is the ideal destination if you have non-riding companions.
