In a city of excellent hostels, the Lisbon Poets Hostel stands out. It has everything you could want from a hostel: great central location, clean and comfortable rooms, nice décor and free provision of the facilities which many hostels charge for such as breakfast, internet and lockers. Best of all though is the feeling that the young owner and staff really want you to experience and enjoy their country. They are full of useful information, unstintingly helpful, and even organise meals or events to mark important dates in the Portuguese calendar. Success would be no more than poetic justice.

Simon Says is a great coffee/tea shop and B&B right in the centre of Ghent. It is housed in a fantastic art nouveau building. The coffee shop serves great coffee including some very special single estate coffees. The best bit is the B&B with fabulous rooms over looking a little square.

A group of small beautiful islands on the lake that is an easy day trip from Granada.
You can even stay overnight on some of them.
It is the undiscovered sister of Ha Long Bay. We sailed through its green waters and looming limestone karsts and saw only a handful of boats - all local fishing boats. If you want to sail on unpolluted waters and avoid touts book a trip through Ethnic Travel. They can arrange a homestay on quiet Van Don island where you cycle from the port. We had a boat between five passengers and was served delicious freshly cooked food on board.
A sleepy old town by the Mekhong which as yet is traditional and undiscovered . It still has wooden shop houses and cheap guesthouses by the river. It has a laid back feel and can be the start of a scenic boat ride, bike ride or car drive along the Mekhong River to Nong Khai where Ventienne, Laos, is just across the friendship bridge.

Borovets is a great resort for intermediate skiers with a short quick transfer from Sofia. We stayed in apartments at Pine Ridge, Madjare. It's in an inexpensive and pretty village near Borovets and is much cheaper than the on piste bars in Borovets.
I recently visited Bamburgh on the Northumberland coast as have heard so much about the castle and the sandy beach which was perfect for the kids and our dogs. We stayed in a fantastic cottage on the Main Street in the village called The Grove which was immaculate, had everything we required (and more) and was extremely comfortable and luxurious - an absolute delight, we didn't want to leave.
Make sure you try the legendary Bamburgh bangers and the butchers is situated next door to the cottage!
Great place to stay when you're going to party and do some sightseeing. We stayed in an apartment in the main market square - not so big but very cosy place with kitchenette and nice bathroom. The flat was located just off Rynek Glowny which is great for the price. What is more in the same building there is good restaurant and it's surrounded by clubs.
I think it's the best location for weekend trip to Krakow.

The Orchid Hotel is a delightful mid-range option in Hue. It deservedly gets rave reviews on Trip Advisor. From $35 you can get an ensuite double room complete with flat screen TV, DVD player and a computer with free internet access in your room. Should you need to chill in your room you can borrow DVDs from reception. The staff are super friendly and they gladly picked us up from the train station free of charge (a welcome service after an overnight train from Hanoi). The price includes a decent enough buffet breakfast and you can book rooms online at the hotel's website.

We had a fantastic holiday thanks to the warm hospitality, wonderful cycling routes, great local knowledge and an extravaganza of vegetarian culinary delights!
We really enjoyed coming back to the beautiful barn every evening, relaxing with a glass of wine and swapping stories with Barry the cat.
We would love to return and highly recommend.
It's a gorgeous Georgian house converted into a B&B or you can hire the whole place privately. We found it a delightfully posh alternative to what you would usually expect from a B&B - creatively decorated and quietly glamorous.
Not cheap but worth it to treat yourself. And there's a pool table ...
This beautiful Georgian house is a B&B, and then some. Owners, Mike and Susan Gordon (delightful hosts) restored the house from scratch (they also own a modern property available for hire nearby) have had a few celebrity guests stay. The place is going to be featured in the next Mr and Mrs Smith guidebook, say no more.

Really beautiful house on the cobbled Mermaid Street in Rye. It is all creaky staircases, narrow passages and dark wood - really like stepping back in time. Breakfast is served in the old Quaker meeting house, a beautifully spacious room adjoining the B&B. Have the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
A really nice touch is the honesty bar. The bar room is cosy and refined and you help yourself to drinks, writing what you have had on a pad to be charged on check out.

The flood in Rome was scary and exciting at the same time. (I can say that now the worst is over). We spent it in a rented apartment from Palazzo Olivia for our family Italian break ... they are so nice. I was worried about going out, but received necessary directions and reassurance during our stay. Comfortable accommodation, great service, great location as usual. On this particular occasion, close enough to the river to "monitor" and far enough to feel safe. Worth a visit.
If you want to visit Rome and indulge in superb accommodation for the price of a hostel, then you should certainly stay at the Auditorium Di Mecenate. A modern hotel that has fantastic styling in both its bedrooms and bathrooms, you almost feel like the owners have misunderstood the exchange rate and will come bounding into your room asking for more money.
The private bedrooms have elegant high ceilings and long glass windows and drapes and the bathrooms are decked out in very modern black tiles and white units. The staff are always very helpful and the location is convenient, being close enough to the city center and just around the corner from the main train station. It’s a brilliant place to stay when trying to save money on your trip.

My partner and I chose this hotel because of its location in Santa Teresa, the bohemian neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro. It's a lovely property with clean and well sized rooms, beautiful public spaces inside and out and a breathtaking view from our room and from the pool. The owners were happy to suggest places to eat and enjoy the Brazilian night life and gave us all the advice we needed for exploring the city. Highly recommended!!
Spacious and affordable ensuite rooms on the quieter north side of Palolem Beach in South Goa. Only 50 yards from the sea!
My favourite place to live an authentic Venetian atmosphere. The owner, Alfonso, is a great host and the apartment I stayed in (Ca' Guardi) was perfect for my holiday.
A great hotel based in the centre of Reykjavik. I was worried it was going to be more of a budget hotel, but it's nothing of the sort!
Ask for a room at the back and you'll get a large room with its own fridge, television and Wi-Fi.
Very comfortable and warm - just what you need when in from the cold!
Volcano National Park - Halema'uma'u is currently erupting and is quite
spectacular. Nearby is the Thurston Lava Tube and the Chain of Craters
road, really reminds you of the power of the volcano. Stay in Volcano
Village.
