Casa del lago

Posted by AliD 23 September 2007

It is accommodation, a cafe, a performance space. A fantastic couple run this lovely place. The accommodation is self-catering and is fully equipped. They also run a cafe-bar and sometimes have live performances on.

The Sheraton

If you are a weary traveller and fancy a night of luxury you can sometimes get great deals on this hotel on the internet. The rooms are very comfy and they have that rare luxury, a bath!
Free transfers to and from the airport too.

Casa Naranja

Posted by AliD 23 September 2007

A friendly family-owned and run guesthouse. The rooms are basic but clean and it is very central and also cheap. Breakfast is not included but it is easy to find a cafe in Cuenca.

A country house hotel with an amazing fitness centre. Fab old country house down a long driveway. Fresh flowers in the entrance hall and friendly staff.

Big rooms with giant beds and nice cotton bedlinen. And smart flatscreen TVs with integral DVD player. But you will need to bring/buy your own as the selection downstairs is dire. Nice reading room too, but again, would advise own books, unless you are keen to read musty mid-century non-classics. Breakfast was good (though served only between 7-9am in the week).

What really made this place for us was the fitness facilities. Genuinely friendly staff meant a really great atmosphere. Good gym (not huge, but decent range of equipment- soon to be upgraded and enlarged apparently). Fantastic big 20m pool open until 9pm and lit sympathetically. Large sauna and steam room.

And, as well as grass tennis courts they have real tennis courts. Very odd, but the two that they have at Prested Hall represent about 1/40th of the world's total. The current no. 2 and no. 8 play there and you can bag a free lesson!
We paid £184 for two nights mid-week which seemed really reasonable.

The Tiffin Room

Posted by chotinho 20 September 2007

The Tiffin Room is a bit of an anomaly - a classy Indian restaurant in the land of cream teas and ice-creams, otherwise known as the Isle of Wight.

It's attached to Bonchurch Manor, a B&B housed in a smart Victorian house with sea views but you don't have to be a guest to eat there. The food is delicious - the masala dosa was the best I've tasted and sea bass cooked in coconut, tamarind and coriander was fantastic.

Standard curry house fare is often too rich and heavy but this food - cooked by B&B owner Shuba Rao - is light and delicately spiced.
The wine list - chosen by Shuba's husband Mark - impressive too and amazingly good value.

Flamingo Bed and Breakfast

Posted by bamboletta 19 September 2007

It's quirky decorated, but very small and cosy. Stayed there on my last trip to Moscow. Only two rooms, but very central and cheap. Great alternative to hotels as much cheaper. Nice staff and great location.

The Terrass Hotel

Posted by DanielPhilpot 18 September 2007

The Terrass Hotel in Montmatre is a fantastic hotel - service, food and staff are all superb in this beautiful region of this most romantic city.

Take the lift up to the 7th floor and onto the roof terrace in the evening and watch the Tour Eiffel light up in the evening surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the Parisian skyline.

On a relaxed & warm summers evening, there's nothing better!

Hotel Quartier Latin

Posted by Deborah Biggs 18 September 2007

Check out a fabulous, chic boutique hotel on the leftbank, called Hotel Quartier Latin.

Slap bang on Rue des Ecoles, and within walking distance of Notre Dame and the wonderful restaurants of the Latin Quarter, it has old-school elegance behind a townhouse facade.

Place Dauphine

Posted by Alfie Stroud 18 September 2007

The leafy Place Dauphine concentrates the peace of Paris’s quieter corners half-way across the Pont Neuf on the Île de la Cité.

Turn left for Rive Gauche chic, right for Rive Droite grandeur. It contains the Hôtel Henri IV, squeezed, tall and thin, into a row of cafés and galleries.

Irregular, sometimes retro, but always clean rooms (some sharing showers, others en suite) stretch up a creaky spiral staircase from the friendly breakfast room.

Four can sleep in characterful simplicity for less than €60.

Perfectly placed for a dawn stroll to Notre Dame then breakfast on the Île St Louis.

Le Lys

Posted by RachelFentem 18 September 2007

Le Lys is a unique B&B in a 17th century house in the atmospheric Marais district, a stone’s throw from Notre Dame and the Centre Pompidou.

Stéphane and Jean’s elegant home is stuffed with antiques and paintings, and the generous breakfast is a delight, but it is the warmth of their welcome that impresses the most.

By the time you leave, you will be firm friends, and your experience of Paris will be all the richer for it.

Le Lys is on Rue Quincampoix, w, and the telephone number is +33 (0)6 7741 2913/(0)1 4704 2880

Eurodisney on the cheap

If you have a motorhome, you can stay for about 20 euros a night in the Eurodisney car park, which is a really cheap way of getting the kids to see Mickey Mouse!

Get to know your MEP

Posted by David Sargent 18 September 2007

Hotels in Strasbourg can be expensive and in short supply when the EU Parliament is sitting.

Try booking a hotel in just over the border in Germany. Make contact with your EU Member of Parliament and arrange a free private tour around the parliament.

Get to know them before you travel and who knows you might get them to take you to lunch or dinner.

August in Strasbourg

Posted by Katherine Tudor 18 September 2007

Try to visit in August when you should get a fantastic hotel deal in any of the hotels near the European Parliament (usually not sitting then).

You can enjoy the beautiful park nearby with its resident stork colonies or take a leisurely stroll along the river to the historic centre.

Another bonus of a summer visit is that there are free Son et Lumiere shows and street theatre at various riverside locations in the evenings.

For lunch, with the money you have saved on your hotel room, treat yourself to a special meal at one of the seriously good restaurants.

Or if you are like us and fail to read the small print, be embarrassed by only being able to afford starters and a bottle of wine in the evening.

The waiters didn't bat an eyelid and we were treated with exactly the same charm (and complimentary nibbles and aperitifs!) as the other diners.

Maybe we were lucky, but it did seem one of the friendliest, least stuffy 'significant cities' we have been lucky enough to visit.

Seafarers and International House

A fraction of the price of any hotel and because it is run by a church it is the only place where you don't pay the exorbitant city hotel taxes.
Unbeatable location.
