Hooy Kaye Lodge

Posted by billygoat2007 20 August 2007

Very homely place to stay, and tastefully decorated, in a pared-down sort of way. Rooms start from €95, and breakfast is included.

We stayed in the room on the top floor, which was like an apartment, spread over two floors with skylight to look up into the stars as you went to sleep, which cost €110.

It's about five minutes' walk from both the Grand Place and the beautiful St Catherine's Cathedral, and all the brilliant restaurants around it.

Hotel Cordoanier

Posted by Christine Willis 20 August 2007

Would you like to be greeted by a stork on the way up to your room at the Hotel Cordoanier?

Ask him nicely and he will direct you - in any language you choose - to the best restaurant round the corner in the main square.

Jungle Beach

Posted by MillaKontkanen 20 August 2007

A Canadian/Vietnamese couple runs this small, relaxed guesthouse with hammocks and 3km of its own beach. The £10 daily fee includes basic accommodation and three amazing meals per day served on a large communal table.

Relax, trek in a jungle, or hike over the boulders to a lovely natural swimming pool under a water fall. The place is sociable and especially popular with backpackers.

60km north of Nha Trang. Get off at the DocLet bus stop and ask waiting motorbike drivers to drop you to Jungle Beach. You can also arrange a van pickup with Canadian owner Sylvio. Email for booking and arrangements: syl@dng.vnn.vn

Crazy House

Posted by MillaKontkanen 20 August 2007

Crazy House, also known as Hang Nga Guesthouse, is an incredible fairy tale building that is all about irregular shapes and creativity.

The building looks like it was carved into a huge tree trunk. You will see a huge giraffe and other animal statues around the place. Every single room is unique and has its own theme. You don't need to stay in the guesthouse to visit it. For a small fee, you can wander in the vacant rooms and find out more about this project that is still in progress.

The architect Hang Nga, a daughter of a former president, rivals Gaudi in creativity.

De Tuilerieen hotel

Posted by Sarah Tudgey 20 August 2007

Stay at the bijou and beautiful De Tuilerieen hotel on Den Djiver Canal. We have stayed there twice now for the impeccable service, gorgeous, individually decorated rooms and the historic champagne breakfast buffet.

Sipping champagne in the black and white chequered breakfast room whilst horse drawn carriages clip clop by on the cobbles outside, and the day to day grind of London seems a long way away.

Book hotels early

The hotels in Bruge become fully booked very early on so you need to book accomodation far in advance if you want to stay in a decent hotel.

Casablanca Hostel

Probably the best place I have stayed in in Peru. The rooms are clean, simple and extremely stylish. There is a roof terrace for catching some rays after a hard days sightseeing.

Eucalyptus Pension

Posted by rickandbill 19 August 2007

This is a small, family-run pension with 12 guest rooms. Each room has a private bath with shower and air conditioner.

The room was clean and basic, but the common areas are what we really enjoyed. The outdoor dining area is covered with a large grape arbor.

The covered veranda offered a comfy place to read and drink tea before and after going to the beach. Breakfast was included in the price of the room and the owner's wife also cooks supper, so I ate several evening meals there also.

Depending on the time of year and the occupancy rate, a single may be had for as little as 15 lira a day!

According to their website, the DNT is Norway's largest outdoor activities organisation. Their work includes maintaining a fantastic network of marked hiking trails and running 144 mountain lodges, linked by these (and other trails).

We have just returned from a week hiking in Jontunheimen and cannot praise the DNT highly enough. I have never seen such an organisation so successful at making the wilderness accessible with minimal disturbance to the natural environment.

The trails are well-marked and maintained and where we used trails not maintained by the DNT, staff were nevertheless able to advise on them. The level of service at the fully staffed lodges we used was extraordinary and not too expensive (by Norwegian standards!). And how good is it to come off a mountain, knowing that a comfortable bed, three course meal, hot showers, and effective drying room are waiting for you? The DNT prides itself in never turning anyone away.

We were walking as a family with two under twelves, so didn't undertake any really major climbs, but the DNT also organises tours of the high peaks etc.

All the activities we undertook, we could have done as non-members, but joining the DNT meant serious discounts on accommodation costs as well as the ability to secure beds when the lodges were nearly full. If you are venturing deeper into the mountains and staying at unstaffed lodges, I think you need to be a member to get a key to the lodges.

Manesty Holiday Cottages

Posted by rsj123 18 August 2007

Manesty Holiday Cottages are in Borrowdale, one of the most beautiful valleys in England, just a 10 minute walk from Lake Derwentwater. They have simply fantastic views.

You can walk from the door on to the fells (my favourite walk, Catbells is just behind the cottages) or to the lake through the wood.

They also have a natural wood-fired hot tub in a small woodland overlooking the valley that you can book by the day - perfect after a long walk.

The cottages are clean and warm and run by a family who live just a minute away. Good value for money. Highly recommended, especially if you are after the quiet life.
