Shangri La Hotel

Posted by JF8995 28 October 2005

5 star hotel which costs less than 60GBP per night per room, and the rooms are modern, spotlessly clean, comfortable & large. The Lemon Cafe has an excellent international cuisine buffet, the main lounge bar has cheesy but fun entertainment, the gym is well equipped, and the service is as you would expect in SE Asia, impeccable.

Ioannina Island

Posted by Jessie1978 27 October 2005

The island in the middle of the Lake of Ioannina used to be home to the monastery of Agios Pantelaemon until 17 January 1822, when it gained a permanent place in Greek history and legend.

On that day, Ali Pasha, the legendary Ottoman ruler of Albanian descent was executed, at the monastery, by troops sent by the Sultan, from Constantinople, for the crime of insubordination. Ali Pasha had fled to the island after the defence of Ioannina to the 2-year siege by the Sultan's troops had laid on the city started collapsing.

The Turks promised Ali Pasha amnesty, arrived at the island supposedly to hand him the pardon papers that had arrived from the capital, and killed him. His body was decapitated and later buried next to the Fetihie Mosque, up on the castle of Ioannina. His head was taken to Constantinople, shown to the Sultan and then buried in a local cemetery.

Today, the monastery is a museum that tells the story of that day and of Ali Pasha's Ioannina.

You will also find a restaurant that serves local food, including lake seafood and frog's legs, and various gift shops. Boats leave from the quay in front of the castle every 10 minutes.

A friendly little gem in the centre of Chamonix. It contains all the facilities you could wish for in a small hotel - helpful staff, internet, summer terrace for sunny breakfasts overlooking Mont Blanc.

They are a really cool independent holiday company with three chalets in Chamonix. My friends and I have stayed with them for the last three years and have always had a wicked time!

They offer everything from lift passes and airport transfers to great meals and hot tubs for very reasonable prices.

Camping Roma

Posted by rjalan 23 October 2005

To say it is a campsite gives the wrong impression, though it is - a large one. We stayed there in a trailer-type bungalow in October 2005. The accommodation was clean and comfortable with twin beds (linen provided), heating and shower room/WC. It was very cheap, compared with any hotel - only £145 for two of us for six nights. There are no cooking facilities, but that was fine for we ate out while sightseeing during the day and had a cold meal in the bungalow in the evening, or went to the splendid on-site pub/restaurant which also provides breakfast. The main downside was no way to dry wet shoes! Frequent buses connect the camp with the Rome metro system.

Domus Mea Hotel (two star)

Posted by rjalan 23 October 2005

A small hotel on the fifth floor of a block, within easy walking distance of Termini, the main railway station in Rome, so good for the first or last night of a holiday in Rome, giving easy access to the station and the metro or buses to the airports. It is not smart, but the front desk is manned 24/7, the staff are friendly, it is inexpensive, breakfast is included, and there are plenty of nearby places to eat.

Bois de Boulogne Campsite

Posted by allendale 22 October 2005

Very good, well-kept, secure, cheap campsite. Well serviced by a regular bus service to the nearest metro, which itself is only a 15-minute walk from the centre of Paris.

Much cheaper than any hotel. The only drawback is the poorly stocked shop so do your food shopping before you arrive.

Good website, reservations can be made online. If you haven't got a tent there are also self-catering cabins to rent.

Amarasinghe Guest House

This family run guest house is one of the best value places I've ever stayed. Beautiful house with fantastic rooms for $10 a night. Mrs Amarasinghe's rice and curry are also top notch - some of the best in Sri Lanka.

Lai Thai Hotel

Posted by PhilSen 21 October 2005

All but a luxury hotel for all but a backpacker's price. The Lai Thai has a great location, minutes from the night market; the air-con rooms are clean and beautifully decorated with teak and bamboo; there's even a swimming pool.

If you're still not satisfied, the hotel has its own foot masseur and fortune teller too. Doubles from 600 Baht (about £8)

Three Black Catz

Posted by noelito 19 October 2005

The hostel to be in Belgrade: great location - walk out of the building and you're in the epicentre of the tourist district, walk down a couple of floors and you venture into Ben Zakiba, what I can only call a glorified lock-in, its exclusive, hedonistic and chilled-out all in one. The clientele are in-the-know Belgraders and ... we only found out this place existed after meeting locals. A good stop-over point before going back to the hostel (I forgot to mention the only downside of the hostel, you need to walk up four floors to get there).

Staying in Quito a bit longer

Posted by ChrisA 18 October 2005

Many people use Quito as a brief stop-off on their way to the jungle, or to the Galapagos. However, it is worth thinking of staying a bit longer. One possiblity is to stay a few weeks to do a full immersion course in Spanish. There are many schools in the city, who can provide one to one tuition at a very reasonable price.

If you are staying longer, you might also want to explore the possibility of taking an apartment - there are many options for apartments to rent in the Old Town, the Mariscal and Guapulo Village.

Of course you can have a great time whilst staying in the city - there are a good selection of theatres, clubs, bars and restaurants to visit, and a nightime walk around the old town is a must, and on Sundays there is a very good sale of artwork at Parc El Ejido.

It's a little known haven just outside the centre of town in a protected national park. A farmhouse then a French ambassador’s hideaway, it is now a chic chalet. The deck and floor-to-ceiling windows offer a great view of the Mont Blanc massif. From £1,350 per week for up to 8 people.
