An excellent alternative to the noise and bustle of Central Hong Kong but easy to get there, with the locals, by ferry - which is two minutes from the hotel. Close to the airport (about 40 mins by taxi, 60 by bus). Excellent value.

Stunningly beautiful decor and fabulous music. Come and have just the one drink, unless you're loaded, and take in this Parisian beauty. And buy a cd on the way out. La Suite is highly recommended.

Riad El Cadi

Posted by dion21uk 8 October 2005

To stay at the Riad El Cadi is to stay at one of the finest Riads in Marrakech. The interior, with its abundant artwork, is totally astounding. The food, service and ambience make this probably the most enjoyable place I have stayed in the world over.

Lounge around, long after your breakfast is served on your rooftop terrace, sheltering from the sun under your canopy. Sneak out now and again to catch some rays and savour the moment. Come lunchtime, stretch and slowly make your way to the main courtyard and lounge once again in one of the decorated alcoves, while sipping beer and awaiting your freshly made meal.

As evening dawns, slowly make your way to your upstairs, pick up your clothes that you left dirty in the room last night, and wonder if you wore them at all, since they're clean once more. Get dressed, and prepare to be dazzled in Jemaa El Fna, which is just a stones throw away.

Hudson Hotel

OK, the rooms may be tiny, but if you want uber-cool at affordable prices, this place is great. It's all about the public areas. A garden bar two storeys above street level, the Hudson bar is still on radar, a chilled out library.

Hyatt Regency Hotel

Posted by PhilSen 5 October 2005

It might well have been because the week leading up to my visit had been extraordinarily tough, but this hotel was a godsend.

Greeted by musicians in Tibetan dress, you enter the main lobby decorated by miniature stupas: from the enormous main window you can see the eyes of the Boudannath peeping over the rooftops.

Fantastic buffet and underground bar too, all for about £70 a night.

The Township Tour

Posted by wayne251063 4 October 2005

It's extremely thought provoking to see how these citizens have come to live in such an interesting, tight community. You will see schoolchildren in nothing more than a corrugated hut, and women cooking for hundreds. There are also very different ethnic groups that keep to their own township.

Vicky's B&B is in a township where you can stay and experience true hospitality. It is also a moving experience; the children have very little, and yet are very happy.

They want to travel the world, just like you. Their hopes and dreams are the same as anyone's. Don't miss this really interesting and emotion-provoking experience.

All hotels, Guesthouses, B&B will have information, try and book with one that puts money back into the townships

Sip champagne at the Planet Bar at the Mount Nelson Hotel and experience the grandeur of the Cape's colonial era. The Planet Bar has recently been refurbished and is a very glamourous way to begin or end your evening. Great cocktails overlooking beautiful gardens.

Holiday Inn

Convenient hotel near the Waterfront.

Friendly service, good breakfast and affordable rates. There's also a great massage place next door if so inclined. A shuttle will take you to the shopping area for a few rand, and it's easy walking distance to Long St, Bo Kapp, etc.

The concierge can also suggest some day tours, and the hotel has an agreement with a good local cab company to offer reduced rates.

Toftagard Vanderheim

Posted by places 3 October 2005

Lovely youth hostel near the coast on the island of Orust. Good accommodation, shared or family rooms (largest about 5 people) in old buildings, or hytter in the garden. Summer restaurant.

Walk down the garden to the sea, or into the village nearby to buy fresh fish, crab or lobster. Alternatively cross the road into the coastal woodland.

There are excellent public transport links to local towns (Ellos, Mollusund and Henan), and ferries to the islands of Gulholmen and Karingdon for swimming, sunbathing, walking and people watching or eating fresh Dublin Bay prawns.

Accessible from Goteborg by public tranport (bus stop 50m). If you arrive late (by car), they will leave your key to collect in the porch. It may be worth getting YHA/HI membership as the supplement for non-members is 45 SEK (£3.50) per night.

Hotel Banys Orientals

Posted by patriddell 3 October 2005

Seeing as it's almost impossible to get a room now it's safe to say the secret's out. Hotel Banys Orientals is, possibly, one of the best value hotels in Europe - it's a boutique, designer property at a budget price.

Rooms come with hardwood floors, minimal four-poster beds, black-and-white prints on the walls, neutral décor and subtle lighting. And it's ideally located between the Gothic Quarter and the Born district. What's the catch? Well, there wasn't one. Now it's getting a reservation.

Albergo Villa Marta

Recently opened hotel: beautifully restored villa just outside Lucca. It's idyllic! A four-star hotel that is friendly and welcoming. Perfect attention to detail in every respect. Run by a husband and wife team - both warm and hospitable - excellent cooks, too! Imaginative weekend "offers" out of season, including Christmas and New Year. Perfect for a longer stay in the area, or for a weekend escape. Bliss! I can't wait to go back!
