A cosy, friendly place on the edge of Boeung Kak Lake, pushed right to the end of a dirt road crammed full of backpacker's bars, restaurants and guesthouses. The perfect place to wind down after a hectic day's motorcycle taxiing, taking in the sunset from the veranda whilst chatting about travel, beer and home with other backpackers who seem to have been housed up here for their whole lives.
On the edge of Boeung Kak lake, to the north of the train station. Follow the path left as you come to the Mosque and keep going until you can't go any further.
A hostel on the south-western edge of town. A laid-back idyll, run by a young couple who are always happy to see new guests. They will find a bed for you somewhere, whether it be a double room with TV and Fridge (a luxury in the summer), or merely a hammock tied between two trees in their garde. Everybody receives the highest order of hospitality. Check it out!
They advertise at the train stations and in phone boxes. Pick up a leaftlet and get on the bus.
This hotel in Malaga city centre is a great place to stay. It has a pool on the roof with fantastic views and a lovely breeze. I would definitely recommend it.
Carlton Arms Hotel is $94 for a double with themed, wacky and arty decor in rooms and corridors. Basic and friendly, it's like staying in a community arts centre. Central with sights and restaurants in walking distance.

Great hotel and cheap (170 reais a night) for a twin/double room. One block from Ipanema beach (not Copacabana)- friendly/accommodating staff - clean rooms and nice little rooftop pool that overlooks the city. Good place.
I've just spent the last two weeks there and I really feel that it's one of the best hostels that I've ever stayed at. In a few words - chill-out room, great bar, massage and spa.
One of the very few choices for budget foreign travellers, the Captain's hostel enjoys a prime location on the Bund and sports a pretty decent roof restaurant to boot. It's 20RMB for a bunk; best to book. Though it's possible to get 'Chinese' dorm rooms elsewhere it's not recommended.

If you are staying at the Hotel Nacional in Havana, pay the extra 30 USD per night for a room on the Executive Floor. A few perks, and a separate breakfast room; the rooms seem bigger than on the other floor, too.

Beyoglu District, is the most cosmopolitan area of Istanbul. Full of shops, bars and restaurants. Definitely the best area to stay and then get taxis out to the various sights like the Haghia Sofia and Topkapi Palace.

This is one of Newcastle's best hotels, with an unrivalled position handy for both the quayside and a quick march into the city centre. I read that it is where Anthony Gormley likes to stay when he is in town constructing angels or whatever. The rooms are quite traditional and less trendy than, say, the Malmaison, but comfortable and the staff very helpful. We stayed on one of their special deals over a long weekend, getting a double room for three nights for the price of two, which was around £220.
Small and reasonably-priced hotel in the Les Gobelins area close to Place d'Italie. Off the tourist trail and loads of good restaurants nearby. Rooms small but adequate, staff friendly and multilingual

A big fuss has been made about Cardiff’s first boutique hotel, Jolyon’s. The restored Georgian townhouse has six lavishly furnished bedrooms, with king-sized beds, wi-fi facilities, free-to-view television, tea, coffee and cafeteria, and views of Cardiff Bay.

This hotel, described on its website as 'super cheap but sexy-chic', was recently voted one of the 25 coolest hotels in the world by Conde Nast Traveller. It’s certainly intriguing: an ugly converted 1960s office tower block right near the train line which was opened when the actor John Malkovich, one of its shareholders, got into bed with 300 Welsh secretaries on live television. Rooms cost £45 per night for a standard room, and £85 for a penthouse.

If you are backpacking or want a cheap room stay at the Yellow Hostel. It has been highly rated and is the best place to stay. With your stay you get a brochure of Rome which identifies all the must-see areas via buses. I did this and it could not be easier. The location of the Hostel is central so you can’t miss it.

It's a restaurant come guesthouse situated in Trok Mayom which is an alley that runs parallel to Koh San Road. It does by far and away the best food in that area and they also sell wine by the glass which is difficult to find. For those not yet used to the delights of firey food it does a fab western menu in tandem to the best currys I have ever tasted (try the Massaman). As a guesthouse it's not great but it is cheap.

Very cool, reasonably priced boutique hotel in the Bleibtreustrasse just off the Ku'damm. Handy for the sights and the S-Bahn, lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity

The Rival Hotel is a wonderful hotel part owned by Benny from Abba, located in the heart of Stockholm in Södermalm. The rooms are airy, affordable and complete with all the latest gadgets... a teddy bear even awaits you on the bed. The bistro downstairs is always bubbling and the bakery sells fantastic bread.

The Beehive has hostel accommodation and 3 self-catering apartments. I stayed in one of the apartments, which was 60 euros a night, really clean with thoughtful decor. They gave us a little map and a guidebook with the owner's recommendations of what to see and do. They seemed to be genuinely keen to make your stay really pleasant. A treat!
