A friendly and laid back hostel near to the lively, historic areas of San Telmo and La Boca. A good mix of nationalities stay there, unlike some other hostels in the city which seem to attract only British 18-30s backpackers. This is a modern hotel with excellent facilities and tasteful décor. It represents fantastic value for money if booked online (double rooms can be had for as little as £35 per room including breakfast). It is situated in a southern suburb of the city that has interesting bars, restaurants, market stalls and shops frequented by the locals. Some real bargains can be found here. The only drawback is the distance from the centre of Beijing and the fact that taxi drivers don’t know where it is – be sure to pick up the hotel’s card at reception with detailed directions. It is, however, ideal for visiting the nearby Temple of Heaven Park.

Friendly, laid-back hostel chain Home now has three excellent branches in Valencia. The vast Backpackers, at Calle Santa Cristina s/n, has dorm rooms from around €13 per person per night or doubles for around €16 per person. The original and more cosy hostel at Calle La Lonja, 4, is similarly priced. The newly refurbished Home Deluxe at Calle Cadires, 11, offers themed double rooms for around €40 a night.

First opened in 1925, and recently renovated, this is quite simply Barcelona's finest hotel. Sitting atop Tibidabo, it rises 300m above the city, offering spectacular views, and the opportunity to walk in the surrounding hills. Wallet-emptyingly expensive, it's one of those places that, if you have to ask the price, you know you can't afford. Which is why it's popular with the likes of Harrison Ford.

Sometimes it seems like half of Europe wears Camper shoes, and the Mallorcan-based company knows just how cool they are. But, if picking up some footwear on your visit to Barcelona isn't enough, you could also stay in the Camper hotel in the Raval quarter. A great site for renting an apartment in Berlin. Reasonably priced, clean and spacious flats in great locations all over the city. I sorted everything out before my trip by email, in English, and paid by credit card when I arrived. A good alternative to staying in a hotel.

Hot, noisy, heaving with people - go about it the wrong way, and Delhi can be hell. Go about it the right way, and you'll find yourself staying in one of the most restful, charming guest houses in India. Gorgeously decorated and improbably cheap, it boasts comfortable beds, spotlessly clean bathrooms, home-cooked meals should you want them, and a blissfully cool roof terrace overhung with climbing plants. The owners, Avnish and Urvashi, go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible - they'll book you taxis to and from the airport, and Avnish runs fascinating off-the-beaten-track tours of 'Hidden Delhi' every Saturday. All this, and it's just a 10-minute walk from Connaught Place. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Most of the five-star chains have places in Jakarta but the most relaxing, elegant hotel is the Dharmawangsa. Part of the elite Rosewood group, its high-ceiling lobbies and calm atmosphere takes one a million miles away from the bustling city outside. Internet deals for £160 plus 21% tax and service are the best going.
