I liked it. It’s just a dark bar with a pool table and a half decent jukebox. Nothing more, nothing less. The private booths are showing their age but a lick of paint and a spruce up wouldn’t do it any favours.

There are so many hidden treasures that are a world apart from the big casinos on the strip. The Doubledown is one of them. A dive bar with live music that is always filled with a huge mix of people from local Bukowski type drinkers to LA hipsters. Last time I was there I asked the owner what time they closed. His reply was they had never ever closed, and he meant it. Try the Ass Juice.

I had an image in my mind of the quintessential Roman pizzeria: a narrow side street, tables packed with locals, buzzing with conversation, great pizza and pasta at a reasonable price. And then, walking along Via Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle, I glanced left and there it was. Service was fast and unforgiving – you threw that order at a flying waiter and hoped it stuck – the decor simple and the demand huge, as locals lined up three-deep along the wall, looking enviously on as we lucky ones tucked into wood-oven pizzas and cheap beers. All the while the owner – only slightly less intimidating than Tony Soprano – directed the chaos like a cigar-chewing maestro. Great food, drink, company and entertainment. When in Rome...

Only in Rome does service barely above curt and drinks for a single-figure amount cause an enthusiastic stir. But Enoteca Antica gives both, and much more besides. Reasonable and tasty food, great Erdinger beers for 5 Euros, and – hang on to your seats – service that is genuinely friendly. And then there’s the location – a stone’s throw from the Spanish Steps, in an old wine cavern so atmospheric you can smell the Chianti in the air.

If you are looking for a night out head to Waterfront, a nice bar - believe it or not, on the water front - and Bed, at the end of the same row of bars, KK's only nightclub!
The brew house next to the Augustiner Abbey on Lindhofstrasse. A traditional beer hall (garden in summer) with terrific beer brewed by the monks. Open from 3:00 pm we went about an hour later and it was surprisingly busy for a weekday. A great social affair although I imagine it could get a bit 'lively' by late evening!

Website promoting the coolest new acts in Bristol for jazz, swing, latin, blues and more. Bristol has a thriving music scene with some great bands doing some great new stuff. If you're looking for the best new jazz band, sax player, vocalist, acoustic act, etc, it's a good place to start.
The coolest place in Bristol. I spotted it in The Guardian and have loved it ever since. Top music, laid-back atmosphere and some great acts - check out jazzsters like cool vocalist Nick Langston if you get a chance.

The well-established Shamrock (Irish) Bar is something of a landmark meeting place for Chengdu expats and locals. Up to 150 people per night roll up for music and fun on a Friday or Saturday evening. There is a free pool table, as well as live international sport (such as Aussie Rules, cricket, rugby, and soccer) televised on several screens throughout the bar area. The beer garden out front provides an excellent alternative for those who wish to generally chat.

The best bar in town. Very different from the bars in bar street. Generally less banging of beakers in the infernal dice games. A cosy place, with live music most Fridays and Saturdays. A good mixture of Chinese and ex-pats.
My best description of how to find it - on leaving the Xianhung Hotel. Jie Fang Nan Road. Turn right and take the second right down Luxin. It is tucked away in a corner on the right, about six hundred yards along. Big illuminted Budweiser sign is a giveaway.
The best Spanish and world tapas restaurant ever! The restaurant is small yet very friendly, and has such a nice atmosphere. The choice is immense, mainly Spanish tapas, with approximately 12 world tapas dishes. If you arrive between 1700-1930 Monday-Thursday, you can eat for the time you arrive (eg arrive at 6.20pm eat for £6.20) however, the menu for this option is limited! Each dish is about, £3-£4 and very generous.

A sheesha bar on the river-front. Run by a friendly bloke and not too expensive, a good way to relax after an exhausting day shopping or seeing the sights of Singapore.
As an Aussie student, just want to say, make sure you know how much your drink costs before you order. Most places are good (Slovak pub, bar across from charlie's) but in other bars, the bar tenders will take what you give them and walk off, it may not be much but it adds up. In just over two drinks in BAROK CIRCUS i paid sk100 (euro3) too much. It's not much, but honesty goes a long way. I took another traveller's tip and asked for a bill, but got some random bill for sk 430. So, just pay with whatever it says on the menu in exact change if possible, it's a pain in the ass but will save you over the night.
Unassuming pub at the top of the hill in Arundel with lovely rooms. One of the doubles has views of the cathedral and the pub is very near the 14th century parish church and the castle. The ensuite rooms are very comfortably decorated and have TV, cd player etc. The pub itself is a local boozer - nothing too classy - but the accommodation is quite unexpected, and very reasonable. Decent English breakfast in the morning, and the service is straightforwardly helpful.

Recently opened in Hells Kitchen. This really is a sexy place - with no attitude and a good vibe. It's billed as a 'stylish, sophisticated gay bar'. Early evening is happy hour, half-price martinis. America seems to like 'shaken' martinis - everyone knows they should be stirred but, what the hell, when in the USA, do as the Americans do.
They're lethal. The music gets going a little later, and an upstairs level opens up, doubling the capacity. It's dark, loud and full of gorgeous boys and girls - many still in their work suits, others out for the evening. I was out on the town on my own, and I really liked it there - the people were friendly and were happy to chat. I left, several hours later, staggering, but smiling.

Lovely Tudor coaching inn at the centre of Rye. A couple of friends live in nearby Hastings, so I come to Rye and stay at The George when I want to extend my trip with some R&R!
The place had closed for restoration until recently (i'd actually been in a couple of years ago when only the bar was open. The rest of it was a bit of a 1970s nightmare). Couldn't believe it when I went back. Beautifully designed rooms, very personal and quirky, as far from a hotel room as you can imagine (and no box shaped rooms in sight).
The George also has a restaurant (very good food, particularly when Rye's many tea rooms get a bit samey) and an evocative, historic pub.
Unfortunately we're currently in the depths of winter as The George's garden, which is in a courtyard, is also very pretty.
This really is a homely but stylish place, and I'd also urge those just visiting Rye for the day to stop in for lunch or a drink, as it's such a beautiful hotel.
One more tip: try to visit Rye when Lamb House is open, a National Trust property that Henry James lived in for the latter part of his life. Only open a couple of days a week but well worth a visit.

Great if you love vodka and even greater if you love beautiful interior decoration. From the outside Revolution looks like any other grey Victorian building but inside is a real treat. Like walking into a massive iced cake you cannot help but gape at the wonderful domed ceilings and intricate plasterwork and you can drink your favourite vodka tipple at the same time....BONUS!
