Urchin Bar, bayside Hampton

Posted by ismith 4 December 2006

Another find in our local High St. and one whilst naming itself 'Urchin Bar' is really a Mediterranean/Middle eastern restaurant serving a great array of different foods ...with a bar with fold back windows overlooking the street.

The food covers many different areas of the Middle East…Moroccan, Tunisian, Greek, and Turkish etc and there is also a great choice of vegetarian courses. In contrast, the small wine list is distinctly Australian. Given that it is a bar (says the name), there is a fine list of cocktails spirits etc as well.

On Sunday afternoons and Wednesday nights there is live music and they also hold (out of hours) belly-dancing classes.

Highly recommended!

The Free Trade Inn

Posted by Freddie37 3 December 2006

From the outside this looks as if it could be the scariest bar in Newcastle.

However once you've plucked up courage and opened the door, you'll find that although stuck in a time warp decor-wise - somewhere in the mid70s, this serves the best beer in Newcastle with views to better those from the Baltic.

Oh and the graffiti in the toilets contains some absolute masterpieces – well worth a read. A perfect place for a Sunday afternoon pint. Well worth the hike along the quayside & up the nettle strewn path.

Centurion Bar

It is a bar with grandeur and cosiness. It has snugly couches, friendly staff, a very pleasant atmosphere and good food options. The nicest station bar I’ve ever seen, by some distance (not much competition).

Effortlessly hip bar tucked away in the northern quarter, friendly staff, good music and always something interesting to look at on the walls.

A nicely designed bar with a beautiful view on the ocean. Cocktails, different kind of beers and good personnel makes this bar the best one in Cumbuco.

In the main street in the centre where you find most of the restaurants.

Great bar with live DJ sets on a Friday and Saturday night. Great juke box when the DJ finishes and always a busy and friendly crowd.

The Trent House

Posted by murphdog 30 November 2006

Newcastle is unashamedly a fashion-led city and while that’s no bad thing (the Toon is vibrant and buzzing etc) the inevitability is that many of the bars are quite formulaic. The Trent House pub defiantly goes against the grain – not in so much as a two fingers up to it’s identikit rivals but more in a ‘we know how it’s done and we don’t follow trends’ kind of way. They know their music but they’re laid back with it (no pretension). Plentiful array of beers, great jukebox, pool table, decent food – all the basics are well covered. Sister venue, World Headquarters puts on some of Newcastle’s top club nights and pulls in the more cutting edge acts to the region.

Bo-Bi Bar

Posted by Harlev 29 November 2006

One of the oldest bars in Copenhagen (has existed since 1917!). It has lots of atmosphere due to the dim lighting, its red wallpaper and jazz on the stereo. The clientele is a mix of old regulars and young people. A place where it's hard not to get into conversation with the person next to you.

Address: Klareboderne 14, Copenhagen K. A side street to Købmagergade and close to Nørreport Station.

South Bar

Posted by cowardlycarta 29 November 2006

Skiing the Agui De Midi on the foot of Mont Blanc is possibly one of the best skiing/boarding experiences that any intermediate or advanced can accomplish.

At the foot of the lift that will bring you back down from this fantastic experience is the South Bar, which I recommend as the best après-ski in the area. The fact that it's a Swedish run bar means that it's full of attractive women and men and there is always quality live music. But best of all is sitting in the downstairs bar watching all the Scandinavians falling and making a fool of themselves whilst coming down the very steep stairs in their ski/board boots. We counted 6 in one hour, one evening. Great fun!

Bottom of the Agui di midi lift station. Go into the Cham Sud apartment area and it's next to Spar supermarket.

Subbass

Posted by gimbollo 29 November 2006

Subbass is a bar - only opens Fridays. It's smokey chaotic with live music being played by whoever decides to join in this spontaneous acoustic "thing". Clientele is made up of locals and expats from UK, US, NZ, Australia. It stays open till the last client leaves which is usually at the break of dawn. Only Japanese beer is sold and there's not a huge variety of alcohol brands but on average all tastes are satisfied. The atmosphere within is definitely worth a visit. Ring at the doorbell, it's not guaranteed that someone will open. Prices are low and service erratic but nonetheless it's worth a visit. Some evenings are quiet many others are a complete delirium.

Hotel Fox

Posted by mkadavies 29 November 2006

Great boutique hotel near centre of town. Conceived as promotional project for VW, 21 international designers and urban artists were briefed to design unique rooms. Result is a strange and otherworldy experience. Highly recommended, staff are helpful and breakfasts terrific - served on day beds/sofas in funky foyer. Click onto website to see all the rooms. Even if you don't choose to stay, you must try the cocktails in the ground floor bar/restaurant which is open to all.

Bankerat

A fantastic little bar/cafe with some of the strangest decor I've ever seen - peculiar taxidermical creations dressed in human clothing, which are created by artist Filip Jensen. A short walk from the town centre it is not full of tourists but has a pleasingly mixed clientele of students, the arty and locals.

Old Town Bar

Posted by Wilsonbeans 28 November 2006

One of the oldest and most authentic bars in Manhattan.

Frequented by many (it gets busy) but mainly by locals and workers around Grammercy and Union Square.

A very long zinc bar, an amazing tin ceiling, some of the best burgers in town and just a great place to hang out and feel as if you are a part of New York. As with most things in New York, this bar just 'works'...it's a great place.

Chess Cafe

One of Vientiane's few clubs (and one of the few places open after 11.30pm). Local bands play a varied, and sometimes quite bizarre, mixture of Thai, Lao and Western pop and rock.

Good place to hang out with the locals and try a bit of Lao dancing!

Open 7pm-midnight.

Nightlife in the city

Posted by johnball 28 November 2006

Much of the nightlife takes place in restaurants. There is a bar street and one or two clubs but the canny local people are put off by expensive beer prices which strangely are triple those charged in restaurants. Perhaps this is why sometimes people make more noise in restaurants than bars here although private rooms are available for this purpose at no extra charge.

Cheap beer at the Moose Bar

Posted by JohnSturzaker 27 November 2006

This is a very lively bar in the city centre and it's the cheapest place we found, by a mile - £1.50 to £2.00 a pint. It tends to be full of students, but if you want to avoid irritating tourists, it's a good bet!
