In its day one of the most painfully trendy bars in London, set-up by the record label of the same name. A great upstairs with intimate booths that you need to grab early to nab; a downstairs with very eclectic DJs and bands. All this plus fantastic White Russians and one of the best juke boxes in town.
Little Portland Street: tube to Oxford Cricus - head to Tottenham Ct Rd, take the 1st road on the leftm then Little Portland is on the left.
Great in the sun in Summer - Mosebacke in Södermalm where you can sit watching the city at your feet whilst partaking in the odd beer. This place also does live music.

The strawberry daiquiris (and the food) in Lisa på Torget in Östermalmstorg are superb.
Very cool, reasonably priced boutique hotel in the Bleibtreustrasse just off the Ku'damm. Handy for the sights and the S-Bahn, lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity

Step off the Arlanda Express or bus from the airport and head for a deep chill in the Ice Bar, located near the central station in the Nordic Sea Hotel on Vasaplan. Sip ABSOLUT vodka cocktails from ice glasses whilst wearing oven mitts and a snug poncho complete with a furry hood fit for the occasion. Chilly, touristy and incredibly funny.
Tavern on Camac is a gay bar and nightclub in Center City that serves great cocktails, and transforms into a live piano bar several nights a week. The pianist always takes requests and has a huge selection of sheet music to choose from, plus mikes for anyone intrepid enough to join him - it starts slow, but by the end of the night everyone's up and singing! This is where we drowned our sorrows the night GW won again, despite our best efforts. As I wrote at the time: "We let it all out at one of Philadelphia's wonderful piano bars, with a pianist who was slightly surprised when fifteen drunken tearful Brits and their American friends settled in for a night of Cosmopolitans and howling along with country music."

Otherwise known as 'The Welsh Club' it eschews the commercialism and loutishness that blights the club scene in city centres around Britain, going instead for an eclectic range of musical styles and ambiences on its rather different three floors.

A party palace of a hostel with clean, modern bathrooms located in the gorgeous (though rowdy by night) Placa Reial just off Las Ramblas. Lots of fun with organised pub crawls and a rooftop bar, Kabul can be noisy at night but is never boring. Good-sized lockers by each bunk and a vending machine selling one-euro beers in the bar. Ace.
See the "last built European Boulevard" by taking a walk eastwards from the astonishing Alexanderplatz. Take a look at the Cinema International with its fabulous lobby. By passing the Strausberger Platz you will enter Karl-Marx-Allee with its splendid and opulent façades (built in the early 1950s by socialist workers using war ruins). It was east Berlin's pride and aorta and, now again, there are nice cafes, art galleries and the street's sheer monumentality will take your breath.

Mother is a grimy basement bar in Kabuchicho which has space for at most 12 svelte people. It has a CD menu (that's right menu!!) that anyone with a love of alternative music or metal would crawl over glass to look at and request from. Which figuratively you may have to, to find it. It's a great place to chat to Tokyoites (between songs obviously) about shared musical loves.
Exit JR Shinjuku Station's East Exit and pass Alta then cross Yasukuni Dori, go down the narrow street which has a Scottish Pub on the right about a third of the way down. At the end of the block on the right is a great bar, Shuffle Beat (also worth a visit), Mother is on the street to the left and almost right in front of you, look out for a small sign and plunge down those darkened stairs.
Very studenty, full of bars and restaurants, great place to watch people go by. Market on Saturday mornings, very good (towards Place des Lices).
Rue and Place St Michel can be accessed easily from the metro station Ste Anne.
Cool but friendly bar with a buzzy atmosphere which sells a huge range of beers (what else?). The food (anything from pasta to steak to salads) is freshly prepared and good value. Friendly enough to go in on your own but also good fun in a group. Open till 2am and if you have a late night here, it also does a good breakfast! It's easy to find, just off the trendy Rue de Boniface (the area is worth exploring too, there are lots of other eateries and bars nearby).

This place has definitely the best coffee in town and the breakfast is fantastic. They also do delicious lunch and dinner, with a daily changing menu, that never disappoints. There is a great welcoming unpretentious atmosphere and it is somewhere to just lounge for a few hours (using their free wireless internet), or book a table for dinner and cocktails.

This place is perfect for lunch, and especially breakfast. It's very good vulue for money, with nice and varied set menus, including cooked options. It has great ambience and is in a great location, ideal for starting the day or take a break after strolling around Palermo Viejo. During the evening it gets busier and more expensive but still worth it.

This is the brewery-tap of the excellent 't Ij brewery. Spit & sawdust would probably be a step up for the place, but the beers brewed on the premises make it well worth a visit. I particularly recommend trying the Columbus and the Struis, both of which score 5/5 on my personal beer scale. Unfortunately opening hours are restricted - it's only open Wednesday to Sunday, 1500-2000.

Without doubt the best beer bar in Amsterdam, this is a traditional brown cafe with a tremendous range of beer and staff who know about that beer. I understand the barrels at the back of the main room are from the Genever distillery that the building used to house. Unusually for a Dutch bar, there's even a non-smoking room. It can be quite hard to find, being down an alleyway, but there's a map on their website.
