In downtown Juneau just a few steps away from the tourist traps is the wonderful, funky, homey Silverbow Inn and Bakery. The restaurant turns into a local indie cinema at weekends, with an eclectic mix of classics, kids' films and documentaries. Sit at a table with a bagel and a beer or a cookie and coffee; chat to the locals or keep to yourself. One of the most relaxing urban spaces I've ever been in.

Restaurant and bar overlooking a quiet inlet on the river Sal near Cavelossim. We visited during the day and it was really nice just sitting looking out over the river, while enjoying a meal and a drink. Plenty of wildlife to watch. I have not been there on an evening, however I understand that they have entertainment. Other friends have eaten there on an evening and tell me that it is excellent.

We walked from the north side of Central Park up Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem to the Lenox Lounge. It's a famous Harlem jazz bar and club where the likes of Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and John Coltrane plied their trade.

Malcolm X worked here before he found religion.
More recently this place has featured in movies such as Malcolm X (obviously) and American Gangster.

My friends and I had a Hens' show in Kenmare to attend and booked accommodation online here at a great rate for the 12 of us. The triple and twin rooms were spacious and modern and it was right in the centre of Kenmare. We booked in for dinner at the restaurant and were not disappointed - we really enjoyed the food, drink and atmosphere.

La Puntilla is another of the typical Spanish tapas bars and restaurants in the mainly Spanish populated part of town.
Highly recommended if you want to sample the tapas and the atmosphere of the town, it will serve you a tapas when you order a drink and don't be frightened to ask for it if they are busy and not offering you one quick enough.
You can also eat lunch and dinner at tables on the street or the roof terrace if it is very busy, again because of the quality of the food this is a very busy restaurant but you never have to wait long for a table. When there is food football on the television you will find the locals come out in numbers,especially if it is Spanish team involved,not to be missed.

Bar Dolores (El Chispa) is a bar/restaurant where the speciality is fresh fish and shellfish. They will also serve you a tapas with every drink ordered in the bar.
There is a seperate area for eating if you want to get away from the noise of the lively bar.
This is another of the local haunts in a prominently Spanish part of town, they have large screens for all the major football tournaments.
I would recommend you search this one out if you want to get away from the main tourist areas, with a little research you will find this part of town has a lot going for it.

First off, if you're driving to Taormina, ensure that your directions to your hotel are spot-on perfect: the twisting hills are confusing. The Michelin Guide directions (online) are extremely detailed.

I liked the Bel Soggiorno: great location and some character. But I hated my room. Book a perimeter room with a balcony/view.

Another tip: be careful of crime. I'm pretty sure that I was targeted while I was there.

The Palazzo San Domenico hotel is an atmospheric place: sneak in and roam the halls at night.

I regret not having visted Castelmola, the village on the cliff overlooking Taormina. I've since heard that there's a phallic-themed bar (Bar Turrisi).

Old fashioned cinema entered through a corridor running through communist-looking tenements and accessed through a courtyard. In summer you can buy beer from a little kiosk in the courtyard and sup it before your film. In winter there's a decent bar and you are allowed to take drinks into the auditorium with you. The cinema's piece de resistance is the fact that the chairs in the auditorium boast drinks holders designed to allow you to line up a beer, a glass of water and a shot side-by-side. Shows arthouse and mainstream films with a decent sprinkling of English language films. Towards the end of 2009 price of entry hovered around the 100kc mark.

Afairly basic bar about 10 minutes by taxi from downtown (and don't walk back to your hotel), this is THE place to go for bluegrass. We were just about the only members of the audience who weren't musicians, as most people got up and did a turn at some point in the evening. A couple of guys from the Del McCoury Band were there. I told them I'd seen them on UK TV, on the Jules Holland show, and they signed their latest (at the time) CD.This was the highlight of our trip to Tennessee.No entry fee.

I recommend a quick drink and a bit to eat with the kids in the Obama Bar in Barcelona. We were walking around in the rain looking for a nice place to have a drink, and by luck we came across the Obama Bar, just days before he was elected!

One of Australia's best rural restaurants is Athelstane House in the historic maritime village of Queenscliff. The dining experience we had was superb, with amazing food backed up by a very good list of local and regional wines (as well as imports from France etc) and very very good service. Dining can be done in the restaurant or on the balcony or in front of the fire. Athelstane House also provides high class accommodation as well as a very good food store. Athelstane House is the winner of many dining and good food awards. We were impressed.

Wonderful little hidden bar, filled with expats, locals and NGO volunteers. There is a lovely little vibe here and they have live music on most nights from an endearing French singer. On Saturdays there is a $20 all you can drink and eat offer. Lots of fun and not the generic bar that you'd encounter in this bustling city.
