Korova

Posted by roboo 8 January 2008

A music venue in the popular drinking area that is Concert Square. Go past all the awful chain bars and two-for-one drinking venues and escape to Korova just up Fleet Street. Wicked venue, illustrations and graphics cover the walls and there are booths in the bar to relax in. During the day there's good food and drink, of an evening you can catch a band or go to one of the club nights. Usually has something going on most evenings.

Geisha

Posted by layla100 7 January 2008

Great food and a lively atmosphere! Billed as Pan-Asian, it offers a range of Japanese, Chinese and Thai food, with my personal favourite being the crispy chilli beef.

The interior is amazing; a huge, bright and modern feel to it. Very chic and relaxed! The music is something worth popping in for too. DJs keep the bar lively, playing everything from house to funk and disco. As far as city centre venues go this one gets my vote.

Circo

Posted by AEF83 7 January 2008

Circo just opened on the Albert Dock- it's a bar and restaurant with a really eccentric circus/freakshow theme - they have life-sized horse lamps and trapeze!

You can hire the private dining room for a night of karaoke- lots of fun! Try the Candyfloss Martini at the bar too...

The Dispensary

Posted by vivn 7 January 2008

The Dispensary on Renshaw Street, like all Cains pubs, sells excellent beer. It is small and welcoming with a very diverse clientele.

Try the other Cains pubs - the Brewery Tap or the Baltic Fleet as well.

Lark Lane

Posted by MaccaT 7 January 2008

Lark Lane is a road next to Sefton Park in south Liverpool, which is worth a visit for an evening or a summer afternoon. There are lots of independent shops, pubs and bars, and restaurants which serve food from Thailand through to Turkey. Have a picnic in the park, then call into Keiths wine bar for a glass of wine and people watching.

Everyman Bistro

Posted by sarahellis63 7 January 2008

Cosy, underground cellars form the three rooms of the bistro. Below ground level, the bistro is a great pre-play venue or meeting place for friends.

When I go home to see my parents we go to the Everyman after I get in to Lime Street. It's really relaxed and although pretty basic, the menu is consistently varied, tasty and fantastic value.

Without exception, my dad orders the delicious tortilla with salads, and the desserts are highly recommended.

The Volunteer

Posted by ambassador08 6 January 2008

The Volunteer is a pub hidden down a back street near the sea front in Waterloo not far from the railway station. It is a small, traditional pub, little bigger than the terraced houses which surround it.

It's a hidden gem - there is no jukebox or music playing, worth a visit if going to see the Iron Men on Crosby beach.

The Crying Gull

Posted by MightyEbbs 6 January 2008

A tiny pub with a brilliant atmosphere. Cosy, underground, with framed newspapers carrying stories about Liverpool from around the world on the walls - The Titanic, Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, Derek Hatton, The Beatles, Boris Johnson etc. A beer called, 'The Echo' is brewed on site and is delicious. The visitor's book is well worth a look too. Unpretentious and a real gem.

On the corner of Blenheim Road and Russell Road, which is just off Penny Lane. L18. There is stone gull on the door.

Centre of Krakov

Best beer pub in Krakov - CK Browar (6-7 Ulica Podwale). Best sport bar with good beer and friendly people - Non Iron.(Marka 27). Best cellar bar/restaurant - Piwiica Pod Ztolta Pipa (Florianska 30). We stayed at the excellent Polera Hotel (Szpitalana 30).

All these are in the centre near the main square and everything in walking distance.

A Hague institution offering live music (bands/djs etc) which has seen some great artists playing in recent times. Well worth checking out the annual 'Music in My Head' festival which celebrates a range of up-and-coming bands from different genres under one umbrella.

A beautiful bar, with huge, full length windows overlooking Rome. As the sun sets over the city, lights begin to pick out the landmarks and the Vatican shines in the distance. A truly wonderful place to watch the sun go down. Also, they have a great drink called 'Energy' to revive the spirits after walking up the hill to get there!

Gösser Bier Klinic

Posted by leejjones 2 January 2008

A great Viennese bar nestled off Graben Strasse, near Stephen's Platz. The only thing better than the excellent beer is the friendly, efficient staff who make sure your tankard is never empty.

The Klinic is not too pricey, and pretty decent food to boot makes this a must for any visitors to Vienna.

Santiago is a university city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the destination of an important pilgrimage route. It has an impressive cathedral where, if you stay for pilgrims mass, you may be lucky enough to see an enormous incense burner (botafumero), swung dangerously low over people's heads during the service.

Like most Spanish cities, the nightlife is good here and anyone who feels brave can do the Paris-Dakar bar crawl - having a drink in each bar between 'Paris' and 'Dakar'. Try the local white wine, especially from Rías Baixas region, which is excellent. In some bars I remember wine being served in saucers, which seems a little abstemious on reflection, but you can always go nuts afterwards with the Basque digestif 'Patxaran'. This is a rather too-easy-to-drink sloe and anise spirit - a headache is guaranteed.

Regarding the weather, rain wear is essential here and don't skimp on quality or you'll find you spend most of your trip drying off in cafes then getting drenched again. In fact, to keep out the kind of torrents you'll face anywhere on the north coast of Spain, I'd recommend waterproofs and an umbrella. Spanish people will tell you that they feel sorry for you living in a country like the UK where it rains all the time. If only they knew! England is a desert compared to Galicia and Asturias. Go anyway though, but be prepared!

Spiz

Posted by ghotifish 30 December 2007

Spiz is a pub on the corner of the Rynek market square. It is a microbrewery serving the best beer in Wroclaw, perhaps even Poland. Plus you also get a free bread and smalec (dripping).
I found Wroclaw to be a very romantic city where you can always see couples wandering the streets. I always enjoyed meandering around the beautiful old town and relaxing in the park overlooking the cathedral.

Spiz is on the corner of the Rynek facing the flower market (Plac Solny).
