    Il Lato Azzurro

Posted by pennyt 3 April 2006

A small hotel on the island of Sant'Erasmo. The island is quiet and agricultural (artichokes their own endemic variety), few cars, you get bikes from the hotel. It is cheap and quiet and friendly. Getting to and from the main parts of Venice is easy, its not far from Murano.

    Via Forti 13, Sant`Erasmo.

    A bike ride

Posted by MelanieW 16 February 2006

We rented bikes when we were there and rode out into the country for a few miles. This way we saw some local culture, kids swimming in a pond (they got a kick out of us and our bikes) and some beautiful views. We tried to ride out to the waterfall but it was too far and got picked up by a taxi. The waterfall near the city is worth it though. As is the market and climbing up on the hills for some views and the sunset. It's a beautiful place.

    Free City Bikes

Posted by ColvilleAndersen 3 November 2005

Wondering what those strange-looking bikes chained to bike racks are? They're free transport opportunities. Pop in a 20 krone coin - just like a shopping trolley - take the bike and ride. You can deliver it back to any other bike rack in the city centre. There is a limit to how far outside the centre you can ride but the fully-adjustable bikes have a map on them. Understand the Copenhageners by riding alongside them. Be warned, however... stick to the right, just like driving. Obey the traffic signals. Just like driving a car.

All over town. Costs 20 kroner in deposit - based on a shopping trolley system.

    Free Bikes

Posted by ColvilleAndersen 2 November 2005

Other cities have achieved fame for their free bikes - Copenhagen for one - but La Rochelle is the birthplace of many fantastic initiatives that were visionary for their time. Rent (borrow is the word) a free bike by the harbour and pedal about the city. The bravehearts among us will head for the bridge to the nearby island, pretending they're Lance Armstrong on Alpe d'Huez.

By the harbour. Ask at the tourist bureau. Great concept.
