Directly due west of Bordeaux, at the midpoint of La Côte d’Argent lies the jewel that is the Bassin d’Arcachon. From chic Cap Ferret at its most Northern edge touring past houses on stilts, stopping at some of the finest fish restaurants on the planet, and round to the spectacular Dune du Pilat, the largest sand dune in Europe, offering a challenge to kids of any age, the Bassin epitomises the best of France in every way.
The diamond of the Bassin d’ Arcachon was, for us, the Parc Ornithologique du Teich. As seasoned birdwatchers, we were stunned by the variety of environments – salt marshes to fresh water habitats - that have been created there. With over 20 hides, and up to 280 species of birds to spot, this place is twitchers’ heaven.

George the bird man is based at the Bakotu Hotel, Gambia. He will walk you from the hotel, over the bridge and along the creek through fields of rice and bright yellow loofah flowers, past men shimmying up palms to tap for palm oil, to a seating area with cold drinks, and a bird hide. Under the shade of casuarina and carob trees, George sets up his telescope and with a laconic “In the scope,” steps aside to show you bee-eaters, sunbirds and pink backed pelican. Farther afield, our twitching count went stratospheric when he led us expertly around the Abuko nature reserve where monkeys crashed overhead as we thrilled at purple heron and red-bellied paradise flycatchers.

Species include 45,000 guillemots, 7000 pairs of gannets and fulmars, kittiwakes and puffins galore. Visit in early summer when the puffins hatch out of their burrows in such numbers that you have to be careful not to step on them.

Foula wears its five-thousand-year history on its sleeve, and has survived centuries of depopulation and underpopulation until today it is one of the most isolated communities to be found anywhere in Europe.

Located about twenty miles west of Shetland Mainland, in the wilds of the North Atlantic, Foula is THE ideal getaway spot for people who love landscapes, flowers, birds, cetacean life - and who don't hanker for crowds or pubs or fancy restaurants or even shops (because Foula has none of those!)

As well as the highest cliffs in occupied Britain (over a quarter of a mile of vertical rock!), Foula is a delight to walk and explore, and its tiny population of under 30 residents make you feel very much at home. I've been travelling for over thirty years, have visited more than forty countries - and would go back to Foula again in a heartbeat.
