Huts Hamburgers

Posted by Augusta 20 September 2006

The best damn hamburgers in town, this place is an Austin institution. The decor is quirky diner with mementos from the restaurants 50+ years of service on the walls, seriously though, for a piece of genuine American culture, this is the only place to go.

The malts are awesome too...

6th st, 2 blocks down from Lamar, (you can walk from Whole Foods Market).

Vivaldino

Posted by Livetotell 12 September 2006

A nice restaurant with good food and good service, nice steak + lyonnese potatoes for $10, and everything else is cheaper than that. Great choice of main dishes, desserts, sandwiches and drinks. Friendly waiters.

In Miraflores, Larco Mar, end of 2nd floor row, if you sit outside you get a nice view of the sea.

Amazing views, incredible food and great hospitality - we ate at the villa 5 of the 7 nights we stayed, loved the antipasta and David's deserts were fabulous. In fact my partner is a vegetarian and the menu was better than most restaurants. Had the most relaxing holiday, in fact we were chilled out within half an hour of arriving. This region of the Marche is still relatively undiscovered and long may it stay that way. Prices for eating out are unbelievable - 3 course meals around 35 euro and great local wines as well.

Villa Sibillini's bed and breakfast rates are just 85 euro a night and the breakfasts are a delight, fresh fruits and many home-made jams.

Couldn't praise it enough, Pam and David have just the right touch - friendly and welcoming, it was like staying with friends. Will certainly be back.

Three room B&B (single, twin and family room for up to 4) in 1906 house in quiet street 10 mins walk from centre of Verona, so ideal for the opera. Also 5 mins from superb public playground at the end of the old brigde over the river. Manuela speaks fluent English and is very happy with children running about and playing with her toy cars. Breakfast is served out in the back garden terrace and she is very keen on organic/quality food. Rooms have ceiling fans with remote control, so expect your kids to enjoy playing with it. She is also the local World Wildlife Fund rep.

Close enough to Venice to allow a long day trip so you avoid the high prices. Family room for 4 plus breakfast was 100 Euros per night in August 2006.

Restaurante A Descoberta

Posted by grapeman 4 September 2006

Restaurante A Descoberta is a small bar/restaurant on the bank of the river Sado in Alcacer do Sal in the mercifully unsung Alentejo region of Portugal.

You will probably be staying at the lovely Pousada D.Afonso II at the top of the hill. The restaurant there is excellent, but "typical" Alentejo cuisine tends, after a while, to become rather "sustaining". The food is good, but the portions tend to be heavy and can to be very large. There is an alternative in Alcacer do Sal. A Descoberta combines the wonderful fresh local ingredients and a welcome lightness of touch that really does them justice. Maybe the fact that the wonderful chef, Catherine, is Belgian, colours the judgement of hotel staff when asked for recommendations, but give it a try. It is not expensive, very friendly, serves good wines and Catherine is happy to discuss the food if she has time. They also sell the excellent local salt. After coffee, take a walk along the river bank before returning to your hotel. We will return.

Hostal Goya

Posted by ciarap 31 August 2006

Simple, clean and perfectly placed in the Santa Cruz district near the cathedral. More importantly, it has air con and is cheap (from €55 for a double). I've stayed here over the past 10 years, and have never felt the urge to put up anywhere fancier.

Fish and chips

Posted by tarnarama 29 August 2006

NZ does a fine trade in 'shark and taties', but this shop, on the main road, right beside the supermarket is a cut above the rest (or was a year ago) - fresh, cooked to order, tasty fish... a great stop off on your way up or down the Coromandel Peninsula.

Main street of Tairua (which isn't hard to find as it's the only main street), right by the supermarket - well, mini-market, really.

Working in Whistler

Posted by victoriaB 26 August 2006

Working in Whistler for a season is a fantastic idea. I worked for the Westin Hotel on the front desk and I got paid a lot more than my friends who worked on the mountain. I also got tips, all meals while I was working, commission, and a severely discounted season pass. I would recommend it for anyone who wants a new experience.

Luna Rossa Backpacker Hostel

Posted by eoinminihan 21 August 2006

This place was absolutely fantastic with the type of service that really makes you feel at home. It has a great central location and loads of other features such as free internet, free national home phone calls and free CD burning! And the staff were very informative and helpful while at the same time very funny and quite charming.

Really, there is other food in Miraflores other than pizza.

Once place to try is Aventuras Marinas. They are one of the few cheapy local places that stay open until 9pm-ish. Especially good is the Ceviche Mixto, and the Aquaditas, a heady soup made with coriander and mixed seafood.

One more recommendation is the most perfect little lunch place at 180 Alcoflores (parallel to Av La Paz). It has no name, just a menu outside with 4 starters and 6 main courses at 6 Sol for the full meal, plus complementary lemongrass drink (the name escapes me). The food tastes like home cooking, and they use real stock for their soups and sauces. Dishes change daily, but don’t change much, so expect soups as starters and chicken, rice, and bean dishes for mains.

This is a gem of a place that is always packed by 1:30pm, so get there just after 12 if you can.

Aventuras Marinas is at 130 Jr. Manuel Bonilla, just round the corner from Pizza Hut.

Rogelio and his wife are the warm and friendly hosts of this beautiful, colonial casa particular (B&B). Right in the centre of Trinidad old town, this 18th century house is filled with antiques and original features. Huge iron beds, original wooden floors and tall windows make it a truly romantic place to stay. From the roof terrace you can enjoy beautiful views over the rooftops and up to the mountains while watching the sun setting at an amazing speed over the horizon. Just 20 minutes by car or taxi to a palm-fringed, white sand beach, on one side of town and the jungle-covered mountains on the other, this casa is perfectly placed for exploring the best Trinidad has to offer. Book in advance as this place is very popular!

Les Passants du Sans Soucy

For a taste of romantic Vieux Montreal, this is the place to stay. A converted 18th-century fur factory, the auberge’s huge rooms have thick stone walls, hardwood floors, marble baths and lots of antiques, and there’s an art gallery in the lobby. Atmospheric down to the freshly-baked croissants.

Le Madrigal Pizzeria

Posted by ColvilleAndersen 31 July 2006

La Rochelle offers a mind-blowing number of eating options. The closer to the harbour, the more expensive it gets.

For a decent priced quality feed, try Le Madrigal. Wonderful pizza, small, friendly and cheapish. Decent kid's menu, too.

Buro Panzio

Posted by Tverskaia 30 July 2006

If you're looking for inexpensive and advantageously located accommodation in Budapest, try Buro Panzio. This is a small hotel, only about l0 rooms, located just off Moszkva Ter, a major subway/tram/bus stop on the Buda side and therefore convenient to almost anything of interest. The rooms are clean, comfortable and air-conditioned, a rarity in any small hotel there. The young staff could not be more friendly and helpful. There is a good Hungarian restaurant next door and a local vegetable/fruit/bread/meat market just across the street. All this equals great value for money at about 60 euros/night. I could not have been more pleased with my stay there.

Cafe Nabeel

Posted by MEATBEAST 29 July 2006

Tucked away in the middle of Split's old town, Cafe Nabeel is a curious but brilliant little local hangout where tourists also seem welcome. The kitchen rustles up hefty pies, best shared, and you can also fill up on toast. Late at night the cafe morphs into a lively night spot where the genial Nabeel can be seen showing off his 'bungra' dance moves - join in for a discount! Perhaps best of all is the decor - a bizarre mixture of local crafts and pieces of Star Wars Lego. An unmissable local oddity.

Head down Zadarska, off Narodni Trg central square in Split's old town.

Hostel Deco

A 1930's themed Hostel on Mazowiecka just off Al. J Slowackiego. The double and dorm rooms are all named after classic actresses, the breakfast is simple, but free, as is the internet. Rooms are also simple, but the bathrooms are impeccable with free laundry facilities.
Not many rooms though, so it's advisable to book ahead in high-season.

Cycling

Posted by Ulla 13 June 2006

Nuremberg provides easy access to the very well-maintained cycle paths that go to Prague and Vienna.

Cycling is also the quickest and cheapest way to get around the city, and the cycle path goes along the river Pegnitz.

Down at "Woerther Wiese" there is a nice beer garden and a sensory garden for kids. Community sports like football and juggling take place there too - just ask, and most of the time you are very welcome to join in.

At "Woerther See", the little lake near the inner city meadows you can rent a boat, and it's also a good place for jogging and keeping fit - running round the lake usually takes about 30-45 min if you are fit.

Of course, cycling is also good during the World Cup. Especially if you want to avoid traffic jams around the stadium.

Sim's Cozy Guesthouse

Posted by Deeside 2 June 2006

This is a great place. The bedrooms are spartan but clean. The place has a rather wide-open feel to it, unlike most clautrophobic hostels. The best part is the food: Sim's has the best food of any hostel I've been to, and it's cheap (8-15 yuan) with big portions. Also, there is often cheap barbecued food on the street outside.

No.42 Xizhushi st. Chengdu - in the northern part of Chengdu, next to Wenshu Yuan Buddhist Temple (which I also recommend). By taxi it's about 8-10 minutes away from the Chairman Mao statue/city centre;
