Successfully avoided the car hire shortage by booking in advance online. Easycar website - easy to use - car ready and waiting on arrival at Nice Airport. Tres bien!
I found this website an excellent source of information for the Algarve and extremely competitive deals on car hire.
I found Malaga airport a bit of a difficult place to come to. Buses weren't signposted, taxis seemed expensive and no one spoke English.
There was also a train but with the works going on you had to walk about half a mile to get to the station.
I recommend hiring a car to see Malaga and the surrounding area, there is so much to see and public transport leaves a lot to be desired.

Don't listen to any scare stories about hiring a car in Iceland. The roads are extremely well-maintained and even in the depths of winter the golden circle route is an easy drive. We went in January and hired a car for £60 from National - a coach trip of the same route would have cost £80 per person.
In India, when you hire a car you automatically get a driver included - which is a very good idea as I personally would not recommend driving in such a hectic town, especially if you're used to northern European/US traffic.
This is an ideal way to get from meeting to meeting, as the driver is at your disposal all day and will come and go as you require. It also works out to be a cheaper alternative to booking individual taxis, especially if your company has a set rate with a particular hire car company.
Major hire car companies such as Hertz, Avis, etc.
They offer brand new cars on very low prices, their service is unique and they can deliver everywhere on the island.

Planning on hiring a car in Las Vegas and travelling across the States? Hire car companies charge high drop-off fees if you rent a car in one place and leave it in another - and the further the distance between the two places, the more they charge.
We flew in to Las Vegas and flew out of Houston. Instead of hiring a car in Las Vegas and dropping it off in Texas, we did a one week rental from Las Vegas dropping it off in Albuquerque, then another one week rental from Albuquerque to Houston. It worked out a lot cheaper and it was a novelty changing cars halfway.
Book online in advance and pick up from the car hire centre at Las Vegas airport. Do the same at the car hire centre in Albuquerque airport.
We recently hired a car with Alamo at LAX and plumped through prebooking for the smallest and cheapest. On arrival they wanted us to trade up to a bigger car (apparently a Focus not being a family car).
When we got outside to choose a car there were only huge cars anyway, so there's no point in paying for the upgrade. There were also lots of Prius sitting there as midsize cars but, because the European families were scared of the unknown, went unpicked. Read up on them before you go if you want a trendy midsize car.
If hiring a car when jumping off the TGV at Avignon, remember which carpark outside the Rempards (circular city wall) you left it.
If not you may have to circumnavigate the whole of the city to find it! As I have done on more than one occasion!
If you want to be flexible or visit other countries, the best way is to rent a car. In only two days I saw Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Kotor Bay (Montenegro). Destinations I wouldn't miss on my trip. I had a good experience with the local car hire company A MarkerCar Rental; fair rates, good service, new cars and very helpful and natural staff. They also offer cabrio cars, bikes, buggy and scooters.

Lots of people will tell you it’s too dangerous or difficult to drive around Jamaica, but take no notice. Watch out for the pot holes and goats, and keep one hand on the horn at all times, and you’ll be fine. Road signs are almost non-existent, but there’s always someone around who’ll point you the right way. Island Car Rentals are far and away the best company to deal with.

I hired a car from this English company. The car for a week during Easter 2006 cost £69 for two drivers, no excesses and service at Seville Airport with Crown Car Hire, the local agent, could not have been bettered. You could return the car full or empty but the rate they charged for a full tank was so reasonable that there was no point in trying to find a garage near the airport.
Car hire brokers offering cheap car hire in the Valencian region. We were able to book easily and safely with them online and found their prices to be amongst the most competitive. Good job!
Avoid the main agents – Hertz, Avis etc – instead try Bravocarhire.com. It seems to be a British-based site which puts you in touch with local car hire companies. We were quoted €54 for two days' hire with Spanish firm Niza Cars, a free additional driver and only €4 more to have insurance excess at zero. The international companies were more than €110.
One thing to watch. They give you the car full and you have to bring it back empty. So you pay for the fuel up front.
There are many different tour operators offering coach journeys to visit one, more or all of the major geographical tourist attractions reached within a day's drive of Reykjavik - Gulfoss Falls, Geyser, the unpronounceable place where the European and American tectonic plates meet and so on.
Instead, hire a car from one of many agencies in the city, which will be promptly delivered to your hotel, and make your own tour instead. It's cheaper, and much more exciting, particularly if you head off early in the morning. Ten minutes from the city centre and it's hard to see any evidence of human life at all save the road, and you can appreciate the majesty of the landscape that much more.

If you're on a budget then don't worry about getting a 4x4 - you can still get well off the beaten track in a normal car. The Yaris we hired was fine for driving on the non-tarmac roads (though I'm glad it wasn't my suspension taking that abuse) - we followed some routes suggested by a guidebook and saw some amazing scenery that you'd miss if you only used coach tours. Be sensible though, take a mobile and check the spare tyre as I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to get a puncture, and we sometimes drove for hundreds of kms without seeing a single living thing!
Avis was cheapest when we went in late September, from the airport.
