Madame Moustache

Posted by Becinbrussels 15 November 2011

An after-dark venue that likes to think of itself as a bit of an oddity, Madame Moustache is a nightly parade of eclectic bands and shows – a cross between a cabaret and a village hall. One night it could be 80s kitsch, another night rockabilly, crazy Balkan or 50s jamboree. There’s probably nowhere else in Brussels quite like it. As for me, I like turning up fortnightly on a Tuesday to practise my lindy hop and Charleston steps to a live swing band; watching others in braces and bowler hats spin and shuffle in the mirrored walls, and ordering beers and cocktails from bar folk in sailor’s outfits.

Serenity Cafe

Posted by ruthc10p 7 February 2010

It's not often people in recovery can let their hair down and boogie, without booze and drugs in their face. If you're in Edinburgh on the last Friday of the month, check it out, it might be drug and alcohol free but the atmosphere is anything but sober - its a real celebration of recovery, a great dance, and there's a warm welcome.

Northern Soul

Posted by Lego8 7 February 2010

Look up your local Northern Soul event on this website: www.northernsoulmusic.co.uk/
Listen to a great selection of rare Tamla Motown music, and watch the acrobatic dancers (join in if you dare). The regulars are friendly, and there is often a music stall in attendance where you can buy Northern Soul CD's or Vinyl.

Escuela Montalbán

Posted by karla1959 12 August 2009

I also did a course at this school in March 2009. I really can recommend it, especially the options Spanish and Flamenco and Spanish and Tango but then I love dancing. I had Spanish classes in the morning and flamenco and tango lessons in the afternoon. And all this in Granada, one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited.

Zero Zero

Posted by lisacarter 27 April 2009

I went with some friends to Zero Zero lounge next to Rio’s planetarium. I thought it was a bit expensive when compared to other clubs I had been to, but the ambience was pretty hipster and sophisticated. They have a huge open-air lounge area with many couches, Indian wooden benches and the ambiance is candlelit, the décor surely adds a sexy, romantic feel to the place. The gorgeous trendy locals cruise around in fashion clothes and fancy drinks. This place is definitely worth a check.

Lounge 69

Posted by estherO 27 March 2009

Club 69 is a breakthrough nightclub. The sound system and the lights there are a reference and ispiration for every other (good) nightclub in Brazil. Once you get in there you feel like you're not on earth. It’s, basically, a black box with lights on the walls and ceiling - red, green, yellow, purple, orange, blue. It’s surely a designer club! Plus the fact the the place is packed with b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l Brazilians. My recommendation is: swallow down a couple of shots, get a real fancy drink and cruise. The place is great for meeting locals!

Beat Club

Imagine its 1966 and your in the heart
of the rocking reeperbahn ... Sweat, German beer, psychedelic rock and hotter than the sun - it had me from the moment I stepped through the door. Literally like stepping through a time warp, very loud live music and a real mixture of different types of people. You really feel like you're in Hamburg.

Lapa 40 Graus

Posted by tebautista 18 February 2009

Lapa 40 Graus is a traditional samba house located right on samba’s birthplace, the Lapa neighborhood. Needless to say, it’s a must-try for everyone who wants to have a piece of the real samba experience. They have several dancefloors, with different bands playing, so even if you’re not into samba, you’ll definitely find something for you. I recommend it!

Clandestino Bar

Posted by brownthomas79 18 February 2009

Clandestino Bar is this undeground club in Copacabana, right next to one of Rio’s most famous hostels, so there’s always a young crowd made of people from all around the world as well as Brazillians. It’s a great way of meeting new people. Since I went to Brazil all by myself, all my now close friends were also fellow travellers I met at Clandestino. They play different music every night (funk, soul, hip hop, pop, electro, etc.) so every night there’s a different crowd.

There is so much going on and it’s all free. See the old forty-something rockabillies dancing to rock’n’roll and the young kids dancing to northern soul. People practising their tap-dancing or tai chi, not to mention the new bands hoping to be spotted by a record company giving it their all. Take a picnic and enjoy the atmosphere, that seems to be what most of the rest of Tokyo does!

Crash/Drifters Club

Posted by elmo 26 September 2008

The crash is the grooviest nightclub in Freiburg. Well, it is not... It's a heavy metal venue near the main train station where you can headbang your balls off. For those of you preferring chemicals to German brew the tiny but popular Drifters club is just upstairs. You'll have fun, either way...

Tango at 33 Portland Place

Posted by jltn 9 September 2008

Set in the former Sierra Leone embassy (think shabby chic, imagine the history of this august building), every week tangueros turn up to roll back the rugs, exposing the wooden floors, and dance the night away.

There's a 1.5-2 hour beginners' class at 6:30pm, followed by a social dancing milonga until 11:30pm. The whole lot costs just £10 and there are snacks and drinks.

Great for a romantic evening, learning a new skill, meeting a diverse set of people with something in common, and exploring a new part of London. Who could ask for more?!

Hard Rock Café

Posted by brownthomas79 22 August 2008

It's weird to explain what Hard Rock is, because most people know the place (they are all over the world!)

The one in Rio is a great nightclub for those who love to dance crazy, with arms and legs wide open because it’s spacious there. I danced 'carioca' funk all night and it was pretty funny! Almost forgot to praise the drinks - very creative and tasty.

La Casa de la Memoria

Posted by bazza76 31 July 2008

With a wealth of potential flamenco available we asked the receptionist at the Museo del Baile Flamenco - incidentally a must for anyone interested in the subject - she recommended La Casa de la Memoria. It's a cultural centre in the Santa Cruz district - a short walk from the cathedral. It's got very limited space and it's worth booking in advance or reserving by phone. No tapas, no drinks just dance. Tickets 14 euros with performances most nights at 21.00.

Club Space

Posted by Sissi 5 June 2008

Miami is renowned for its party atmosphere and dance clubs. And what better way to experience this than at Club Space?

Regular DJs include Deep Dish, Roger Sanchez and Eric Prydz (who I’ve been lucky enough to catch) and this huge club is always packed full of revelers dancing the night away!

Its reputation as one of the best dance clubs in the States attracts an excitable crowd that are often visitors from other cities meaning there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends if you feel the need to take a break from raving…

Tickets aren’t the cheapest but they’re worth the price, especially considering just how many hours of entertainment you get in one night – it even has a 24 hour license.

Laid back but stylish large multi-level bar, in Sydney CBD. Better on weekdays. Tuesday salsa night is pretty hot - great dancing guys and girls, charged and sexy.

Main bar can have occasional losers, but mostly good. Service can be tricky, but atmosphere is worth it. Upstairs, chilled-out Hemmesphere bar is about lounging, cushions, cigars, good wine, good staff - all in all a good spot. Where Sydney unwinds.

Beware tango shows

Posted by hendo 19 March 2008

Beware some of the tango shows in Buenos Aires that are recommended by your hotel. Bar Sur in San Telmo and Mandera Tango in the port area of BA are a rip off and are tourist traps.

For example, they will try and give you a poor seat with a bad view for you to upgrade to the 'VIP' area. They include a poor dinner with horrible house wine then con you to have a photo taken with two of the tango dancers who they say appear in the show then you never see them again.

They'll also offer you a cocktail for 40 pesos which is three times the price of any cocktail anywhere else. Bar Sur charges 210 pesos per person for the dinner and show in one of the tightest floor spaces in BA. Then the drinks are double the price of anywhere else in BA. If you want to see tango choose very carefully.

Clärchens Ballhaus

Posted by emi05 8 March 2008

Berlin in a nutshell. Peculiar mix of people - 70 year-old ladies in old-fashioned evening dresses and gentlemen in suits, urban bummers in Hugo Boss as well as crazy hipsters are to be seen in this old ballroom (existed since 1913) in the centre of Berlin.

Situated in a scraped building surrounded by numerous art galleries, the place was visited by Tom Cruise during his search for old-fashioned shooting locations for the film 'Valkyrie'. Good food and delicious home-made cakes. Music changes depending on the day (cha cha, swing, waltz and tango). In the summer, the garden is an additional attraction.

If you walk down the Auguststr (Berlin Mitte), you'll spot an enchanting garden and the scraped building behind it.
