A great little bar

Posted by bingodave58 21 February 2008

With your back to Osaka's Umeda station, walk at street level around the right hand side of the Hanshin department store. There you will find an off license that serves beer and great snacks at off sale prices. There's a standing bar with sports playing in the background - stand with the suited office set drinking in a unique (for Japan) western friendly style.

The unique blend of town and desert

Posted by udann 20 February 2008

The former German town of Swakopmund is bordered by the cold Atlantic Ocean on one side and the hot Namib Desert on the other. Its architecture is reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s, restaurants feature German meals and even the language is invariably German.

Hotel Phillip Island

Posted by ismith 20 February 2008

Hotel Phillip Island is centrally located in Cowes on the esplanade with simply one of the best views from any eatery I have been in. The food is good with a quite extensive menu with plenty of seafood listed.
Quite a nice spot to while away the time with a drink, a meal and the view.

Punjab Tandoori, Rusholme

Best Indian restaurant on the Curry Mile. Despite its name, it's the only place you can find south Indian food in Manchester - bhel puri, masala dosa, uttapam. Friendly service, reasonable prices, good for vegetarians.

It is a Bosnian dish of grilled spiced mince meat sausages stuffed in a flatbread served with chopped onions. It is found all over the Balkans but I had the best ones in Sarajevo.

Taller de Tapas

Posted by pipilongstocking 15 February 2008

Very good tapas in the best restaurant atmosphere. We really enjoyed it. The food was delicious. Grilled king prawns, steamed mussels, roast lamb, fried and crispy artichokes, patatas bravas. The setting on Rambla Catalubya was beautiful. They have another very lively restaurant in the Born area which was very welcoming and fun. We didn't try the other two but have heard good things about them.

Dada

The easiest, friendliest and probably best-looking bar/restaurant in BA with top cocktails supplied by a Geordie barman, barflys made up of artists and jovial locals and a kitchen that serves up delicious argie-based food with an often spicy twist (rare for BA!). Enough said.

Silks Fish and Chips

Posted by harrogate 14 February 2008

This is a very good fish and chip takeaway shop (fish and chip shop of the year 06/07). The largest fish I have ever had! It also has a very pleasant seating area in the garden outside, with lots of free parking which is very rare in Scarborough.

Just outside Scarborough on the Crossgates Road heading to Seamer/Pickering only three miles from the centre of Scarborough. Mainly used by local people which must say a lot.

Best steakhouse I've eaten at (and there's been a few). Good service and amazing Porterhouse steaks. Try and leave some room for the cheesecake desert.

Fish Nation in Nanluoguxiang

Posted by mandapanda 14 February 2008

Fish Nation serves the best fish and chips, pizzas and salads in Beijing. They also have English beers and ciders. What's more - it's on one of Beijing's oldest hutongs and their cute little roof terrace is perfect for eating good grub while viewing the old hutongs and soaking up the sun.

Gesthers Restaurant

Posted by derderder 13 February 2008

Gesthers is simply the best restaurant in Gozo. Serves traditional Gozitan dishes, the recipes having been handed down from generation to generation. Opens only at lunchtime, Monday through Saturday. It is very reasonably priced. The decor IS very basic...don't let it put you off. Bragioli and spaghetti with rabbit sauce come highly recommended. I've been going there for the last 12 years and have never once been disappointed.

Guapo Loco Mexican Restaurant

Posted by edoardolupino 12 February 2008

Mexican food lovers, rejoice! This is a great place to grab some Mexican food, should you be around the Leblon area. They have an all-you-can-eat feast on weekends, and its pretty cheap too! When in Rio, pin this one down, it's worth the trip.

Restaurants

Posted by bluecherry 12 February 2008

A great destination for families, Muscat has everything and cheap at that. My tip is to make sure you leave your luxury hotel with private beach etc, to eat. Yes, you won't be able to drink alcohol in Omani restaurants but the selection of Arab food, seafood (lobster for £5 a head), Indian food and Persian (among others) are a delight, obscenely cheap compared with hotel fare, and served by friendly locals. The Mermaid on the beach just along from the Hyatt is a particular gem.

Le Parker Meridien hotel

Posted by Splitbulb 11 February 2008

Ideally situated, just south of the park and within walking distance of The Met, MOMA, Times Sq and Rockefeller Center. Also has the famous Burger Joint for cheap eats and Norma's for an expensive but high class breakfast. Just minutes from subway. Also has swimming pool and gym neither of which we had time to try.

Kampala market

Posted by ClaireBurdett 11 February 2008

Amazing mix of colours, sights and sounds.

Best tip - buy a couple of kilos of crickets from the old lady sitting under the umbrella at the very far end of the market. Crickets? Yes, don't be squeamish! They are caught by children for Ugandan pennies, de-winged, and then kept alive in a huge covered barrel, which keeps them docile and sleepy.

Fry them quickly over a high heat - they taste exactly like prawns! My children couldn't stop eating them, and we had to fight them for a grown up share!

Grown up tip: fried crickets are delicious nibbled as you sip your Ugandan beer sitting in the sunshine, waiting your meal to arrive freshly cooked...yum.

Restaurante La Capilla

Posted by Abrilsaldana 10 February 2008

This restaurant is about 45 minutes out of town, near Zaachila. It has excellent food and it's also great to go with kids. It's an open restaurant with hammocks around and lots of fun for kids and the food is great - try the mole with turkey or the pit barbacoa of goat or lamb in avocado leaves.

Also good antojitos (especially the tlayudas) and other Oaxacan specialties that you’d find in an outdoor restaurant. Unless you have a car, you’ll need to hire a taxi by the hour and have him wait.

Just went over to Bruges and visited this great chocolate shop. It was a chilly morning and Francoise (Fa) Thomaes and Barbe Van Den Haute were serving fantastic hot chocolate in their first floor tea-room. A great big cup of Belgian chocolate hot milk in a floating island of chocolate filled with fresh cream!! On the side - fresh Belgian pralines from their chocolatier. Decadent and delicious!

I enjoy my visits here as they always help in choosing just the right selection for my daughter Joanna.

Prague Airport cafeteria

Posted by Benicek 9 February 2008

One of the most reasonable restaurants in Prague is, surprisingly, the level 2 cafeteria at Ruzyne airport terminal 1. Not to be confused with the extortionate establishments downstairs and heavily patronised by Czech aircrews, the cafeteria can be accessed both from the transit lounge and departure hall.

Hearty Czech soups are cooked daily, fresh tea can be had from big caddies or, if you want to spend more, they will cook a steak for you to order and the cook will bring it to the table.
