The Story Bridge Hotel

Posted by Singsing 2 August 2007

Famous old hotel in Kangaroo Point with a fantastic view across the river of the CBD. Good tucker in three different bars or in the adjoining steak house (Deery's Restaurant). Annual cockroach racing on Australia Day.

The Tug Restaurant

Posted by bladeaway 2 August 2007

Converted Liverpool-built steam tug boat that plied its trade in Cape Town, now forms a stylish, excellent restaurant and bar, specialising in great local seafood, with views to match.

Positively cheap by European standards.

A much praised (in the guides) Galician restaurant with a Michelin star. Deperately snooty. Desperately contrived. We should have been suspicious because we walked in and got a table without a reservation. Both other tables were visitors like us. Neither the food nor the service lived up to the star rating (not our first visit to a starred place.) Tasteless Croquetas de Mariscos (we had better in a small bar in Padron the following day for a fraction of the cost.) Pointless sugar flourishes, adding nothing. Appalling unhelpful and begrudging service of courses in the wrong order. Freezing cold cheese platter - explained to us by the chef herself "the Spanish don't eat cheese so we have to keep it in the fridge..." What???? Chef (in civvies) and waiter (with blocked nose - hay fever or a cold?) pacing the floor impatiently throughout the meal - not helpfully, but as if desperate for us to be out of the way - and this was before we had indicated we were not entirely delighted. If you have money to spend on good food, go somewhere else.

This restaurant is amazing! A great selection of innovative dishes with fabulous service.

Caminetti is a cosy family restaurant with a beautiful outside dining area overlooking the Piazza and Arco Della Pace and a delightful traditional interior.

Try the carrot and almond tart and follow up with the theatre that is macaroni heated in a giant parmesan wheel of cheese! Perfectly situated to move on to to some fantastic bars when you have finished your stunning meal.

The best meal we ate in a two-week tour.

Elephants & Bagels cafe

Posted by GORGY 31 July 2007

Bagel and coffee shop. I have just spent 10 days in Edinburgh for the first time, went to this cosy, crazy cafe on my second day and found myself heading back there every day for the rest of my hols!

Amazing choice of Bagels, good coffee and not too pricy. Just a brilliant place to hang out and relax (hope my drawing makes it on to the wall).

Jacques

If Gerard Depardieu had a love child with Liz McColgan, this is the restaurant that child would manage.

As Parisian as the Seine, as Scottish as Cairngorm, this is a shining gem in a grottier bit of the city.

Great food, great service - well worth looking it out, but do book.

Kucuk Ev restaurant

Posted by DouglasPaddy 30 July 2007

Great food, great atmosphere and a great price!

Surprising that it is so close to the main sites of Sultanhamet and yet such good value.

As in all places in Istanbul, the price of wine / alcohol is very high. Our two mains and bottle of wine came to 66 lira - of which 30 lira was for the wine.

At an exchange rate of 2.5 lira to £1, this meant that our meals cost just a little over £14.

Wonderful fish on the menu and I recommend the chicken hagiasophia.

They have a terrace that looks onto the Blue Mosque.

All along the street there are "kapici" (managers/head waiters) trying to lure you into their respective establishments, but to be fair they do this with good humour and banter.

Incili Cavus Sk No 21 Sultanhamet.
If you stand facing the Haghia Sofia the street is across the road on your left parallel to the Divan Yolu street (which has the tram line). It is next to the Mozaik restaurant on the corner of the street.

Blue Bar, Porthtowan

The best bar for miles. The food is always fantastically good (try the Blue Burger!!), the view out on to the beach is beautiful whatever the weather and it's such a chilled out place you'll wish you lived there!

An award-winning chippy in the New Town. Enjoy a range of deep-fried treats, including haggis pudding or battered pizza with your chips, all covered in an Edinburgh-wide chip shop specialty, brown sauce (half HP, half vinegar, all fantastic).

While the food is good, the range of booze is amazing; especially if you fancy a jeroboam of champagne to wash down your chips.

The city in winter

Posted by scottishfling 28 July 2007

From the antique grandeur of the Old Town to the cold classical beauty of the New Town, this is the most beautiful city in Europe.

I am a Canadian who visits every January. The weather is not unpleasant: last year there were days and days of glorious sunshine.

The best place to stay is in the Old Town. This is where all the real-life characters of the city hang out. Sit on a bench in Hunter Square or one close to St Giles and just observe the people. Walk down the High Street from the castle to Holyrood.

A great place to eat is Always Sunday close to the Fringe Office, spend Friday/Saturday night listening to the band at the small Scotsman Lounge on Cockburn.

See you there...

Who needs the Côte d'Azur?

Posted by Mercertron 26 July 2007

I challenge anyone not to relax in Collioure, an historic coastal town just south of Perpignan and sandwiched between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean.

You can wander the narrow streets, ponder the meaning of life in a seafront café or march into the rugged hills and vineyards behind, where you’ll get a great panoramic view of the town below.

Seafood lovers should sample the famous Collioure anchovies. For foodies generally, Café le Vauban serves a never-ending platter of regional delicacies that redefines the term "bargain".

Collioure can be a great base to explore up and down the coast too. A train line runs through several towns, but be aware that all trains cease between around 1pm and 3pm, as is the Mediterranean way.

Where to stay: a good value hotel is Le Triton. Breakfast by the sea …

30mins on train from Perpignan.

Having been to many Michelin restaurants, I've never met an English-speaking sommalier so passionate or with such incredible depth of knowledge.

Further, she was delighted to recommend superb wines for €25/bottle.

Food was also first class.

Book in advance.

Chateau de la Pioline

Posted by Bunny8 25 July 2007

A 16th-century chateau set in beautiful grounds with a wonderful restaurant.

In the summer you eat on the terrace beneath linden trees.

Elegant without being pompous.

Set behind the shopping/commercial estate of les Milles just outside Aix off the Marseilles road. You go through the grand gates and into another century.

Thonglor Shops

Posted by Seaspray 25 July 2007

If you take a 15 minute Skytrain journey from BTS Siam to BTS Thong Lo you can join the lifestyle, living and shopping experience in Bangkok's designer shopping district, Thonglor.

The crowd is more residential, international, professional thirtysomething than the teens and tourists around Siam and MBK.

Couples can easily spend a whole day in Thonglor. For the morning get a coffee and up to date with emails at True Life. Relax into a half-day "Ecstasy Time" spa package in a double room at Leyana Spa. Then have an illuminated evening meal outside at To Die For restaurant in H1 - Thonglor's design HQ. And finally, discover some Bangkok trends inside the Playground mall and rub shoulders with Thai celebrities unwinding at Starbucks. If one of you is starting to tire, take an aircon taxi back to BTS Thong Lo for 35 Baht and on to your hotel in air-conditioned, speedy Skytrain comfort.

Alternatively, if you feel yourselves becoming part Thonglor, you may stay late and never want to go back ...

11th Street Diner

Posted by LexiLex 25 July 2007

Everyone talks about the News Cafe or Jerry's Deli, but the 11th Street Diner is cheaper, with better food and it doesn't take an hour to get your order delivered! They do huge omelettes in the morning and great milkshakes, all in the setting of an authentic 1950's diner. I love it!

Le Brulot

Posted by PeteinSQ 25 July 2007

Le Brulot is a fantastic French restaurant in Antibes. It does amazing steak cooked in a traditional wood fired oven (a brulot). They also cook wonderful fish, mussels and other seafood.

This isn't a particularly posh restaurant, it would probably be best described as rustic. However, the food speaks for itself and I always visit whenever I am in the area.
