Khao Soi

Posted by jonwright 27 May 2007

Khao Soi is a speciality of northern Thailand. It's a rich curry soup with soft yellow noodles. Usually served with chicken, sometimes pork, it will be topped with crispy-fried noodles.

At my favourite place at the top of Rachamankha Road you get Khao Soi with a chicken drumstick for 30B.

Try it at a few places so you get a feel for the different variations. Don't order it in a 'restaurant' though - this dish is strictly street food!

If you like to relax with a good glass of wine then you must stop by Andy's Wine Bar and Restaurant in Nha Trang.

Go upstairs and nab one of the cozy balcony seats - you'll have a bird's eye view of street life below.

The wine bar has a very special ambience with its cathedral-like ceilings and large open windows overlooking the neighbouring church yard.

If you're not a wine drinker and just want a relaxing place to eat, they have some really tasty Vietnamese dishes (at very resonable prices too).

Restaurant is owned and managed by two local brothers, who generously provide tips on travel around Vietnam. You may even be lucky enough to join them on one of their bike tours into the Nha Trang countryside.

Green's

Posted by Caryne 26 May 2007

Avoid this place like the plague. Claimed on the phone they catered for vegans, on arrival one dish on the main menu was vegan, so they said, but when it arrived it smelt strongly of Guinness. They confirmed this and whilst I pointed out Guinness was not even a vegetarian product (due to its isinglass fining) they just shrugged. Also had no vegan desserts and no knowledge of whether wine was either vegetarian or vegan. This is NOT a true vegetarian restaurant, rather a place for meat-eaters who want a taste of 'meat-less' meals.

Some of the best vegetartian food I have eaten ever. Great vegan choices and very accommodating with a teenager who wanted an 'interesting' mix of foods. Can not recommend enough.

Avoid Demuths

Food was overcooked and oversweetened mush. Cramped tables and friendly staff, whose only reply to our complaint was a silent smile. Run from it.

Oh My Cod!

Posted by jonwright 25 May 2007

Fish & chips, bangers & mash, pasties, pies, ... in Banglamphu!

A clean, airy place. Away from the sewer smells, noise and pollution. Oh My Cod! has seating in cubicles, each with flat-screen TV (you've been warned), outside where you can watch the koi carp, or you can sit at a normal 'cafe' table inside.

Pies and pasties are homemade. Warning: the pasty is big. Don't eat if you plan to walk around the palaces.

Oh yeah they have wifi too.

Located down Soi Rambuttri, turn down the alley near 7-Eleven.

Cafe des Deux Moulins

Posted by barenib 24 May 2007

Before the film 'Amelie', it was just another cafe in Montmartre. It serves perfectly good food and drink, as it always did, and lies on the tourist trail between the Moulin Rouge and Sacre Coeur.

Now it's a stop for a coffee, or lunch, because everyone wants to see the film location. Apart from the tobacco counter, everything is just as it was in the film, including the miniscule 'toilette' where the earth-shaking sex scene took place.

When I made my visit it was full of art students rather than tourists, perhaps you need to go there in the evenings to find out if the locals still actually use it. As a rare example of a real life film set though, it's priceless.

La Robe et le Palais

Posted by JessicaAldred 23 May 2007

A relaxed and informal French restaurant that serves traditional fare. Oysters from Cancale, creme brulee, pate, steak, duck and great gratin dauphinois were some of the very reasonably priced dishes enjoyed. It has a huge wine list and staff bring you menus chalked up on blackboards. Booking is recommended as it gets very busy. Good for dinner or lunch.

Bodega Gonzales Byass

Posted by JessicaAldred 23 May 2007

A bit twee (you travel on a miniature train, there is a mouse trained to run up a ladder and drink sherry ...) but worth a trip. Jerez is a town entirely founded on sherry exports so it's good to come here and understand what it's all about. The tasting certainly challenges any preconceptions of sherry you may have had - it's not like granny's Christmas tipple. A glass of fino and a plate of tapas is your reward at the end of an interesting tour around the estate.
