A hostel close to the centre of Granada, the Bearded Monkey is friendly and lively without being dominated by hard-partying backpackers.
Arranged around a central courtyard lit with twinkling lights, the (public) bar sells local beers, decent food and its own compilation CDs, as well as running DVD nights from the owner's great selection, for a small donation.
Check the noticeboard for good value Spanish lessons by local teachers (Anjelica is recommended) and trips to the nearby Lago de Apoyo, where the Bearded Monkey has a cabin, the Monkey Hut, with terraces running down to the lake - an excellent swimming spot.

Sutis was recommended by the owner of the Cagaloglu Hamam (Turkish bath) in the Sultanahmet area. We were expecting a tourist trap, but loads of locals eat there - always a good sign.
Prices are insanely low for the area and you can definitely find something for under six lira. We tried the tavuk durum for 3.75ytl - chicken, fresh vegetables and fries in a thin flatbread. It was the best thing we'd eaten in Istanbul!
Paket Servisi Saatlerimi - just up the road from Cagaloglu Hamam, towards the Grand Bazaar.

Hidden away from the seagulls and sound lies a little courtyard where virginia creeper meet sparrows and butterflies - Libra Court, the cheeky jewel on Sidmouth's crown.
If you fancy a wander around artist studios, a nibble on chunky farmhouse bread, or just to sit and watch the buzz do its buzzing, hop off the seafront, go straight on down the highstreet, take a right, then nip left.
Life has a rather colourful palette in Libra Court.

Devon is famous for its cream teas and this place serves the finest ones in the land. Organic scones, made in an ancient mill surounded by Devonish countryside which is a perfect excuse to walk off the cream.

This is the first pub to open its doors in Chiang Mai and was voted one of the best bars in the world. It is an olde worlde English pub in the true tradition. Has a great selection of food and drinks including roast dinners on Sundays.
It recently had a makeover and extended the bar and the restaurant but has kept its old charm. There is also an outside area where you can sit and enjoy the tranquility of a tropical garden. And now has new bungalows added for those wishing to linger a while. A must to visit when in Chiang Mai.
Restaurant Istanbul serves delicious traditional Ottoman kitchen and is one of the few really high quality places in Marmaris harbour. They serve everything from cocktails over traditional Turkish meals to cigars.
The restaurant is designed with much attention to detail and particularly beautiful are the fish tanks. A highly recommended place to sample traditional Ottoman cuisine in a stylish environment.

The Old Town is linked to the mainland by a single causeway, entering the town through a single archway. The whole of the Old Town is a Unesco World Heritage site, and has some stunning old churches, some dating from around 1000 AD. There are a number of excellent restaurants, with seafood a speciality.

The Stadtische Galerie in the Lenbachhaus is set in an Italianate villa and shows both changing exhibitions and a permanent collection of paintings and sculpture from the first half of the Twentieth century. There is an unrivalled collection of the work of Kandinsky, Gabriele Munther and Franz Marc. The building has an intimate, friendly atmosphere and, very important, a good cafeteria.
Luisenstrasse 33. U2 to Konigsplatz from Hauptbahnhof (central station). Five minute walk to Lenbachhaus.
This is a great little restaurant, tucked away near the river in Sowerby with great ambience and friendly staff. It outshines the area and gives hope that things are on the up for this Northern Milltown. The dishes are all vegan and range from huge seasonal dishes like aparagaus and new potato salad to baked plantains with spicy mango salsa. The puddings are great, really traditional and everything is prepared fresh in the open kitchen. The wine is organic too, but reasonable so a three course meal for two plus wine is just under £45 - splendid.

A great place in the centre of Kunming with an extensive menu of coffees, cakes and ice cream. I've idled away many hours there as they also provide wireless internet.

A bit slow, and a little pricey, the World Peace Cafe is still a must for the altruistic or the plain curious. Run by the Manjushri Buddhists from nearby Conishead Priory, from 11.30 to 2.30 it serves only organic, fair-trade vegetarian food (mains £5.00, sandwiches £4), cakes and a selection of teas from Earl Grey to Ayurvedic.
The cafe also offers evening sessions in its very own meditation room (cost £9.50) - there's even a lunchtime guided meditation (£4.50) followed by soup of the day...

Pho (rice noodle soup, pronounced “phur”) is a traditional meal in northern Vietnam, particularly in Hanoi, dating back thousands of years.
Pho looks like a simple dish, but it actually takes a lot of skill and experience to prepare properly. A good bowl of pho calls for sweet and pure bouillon, soft rice noodles that are soaked in boiling water for just the right duration, and of course, tender and fragrant meat (chicken or beef).
Pho Bo is noodles with sliced beef while Pho Ga is noodles with shredded chicken.
Some of the best homemade ice cream I've ever tasted, served by the makers in an atmosphere that's friendly and warm. Go there for the ice cream, stay for the chat and come away with a desire to return. I recommend the raspberry cup... If anyone wants to buy me one, I'll explain why!

The peak of ice cream perfection ... in the Peak District. The vans do the rounds of Derbyshire honeypots, and there's a posh ice cream parlour in posh Bakewell. Try the Bakewell pudding flavour.
