Den Gule Cottage, Klampenborg

Posted by YinLi 30 November 2006

A fairy tale thatched cottage restaurant (hence the name - the Yellow Cottage) on the Danish Riviera, overlooking the beach, which serves fantastic Modern Danish food. Just 20 mins from Copenhagen station so a great day out too. It's tiny though (seats about 15!) so you'll need to book.

(5 mins walk from Klampenborg station, get outside, turn right and head towards the water!)

An excellent herring restaurant with a great selection of this classic Danish delicacy, helpful waitresses and plenty of tables outside to enjoy the Nyhavn atmosphere and views.

Pani's Cafe

Posted by murphdog 30 November 2006

By far the best Italian food in Newcastle – if not the whole North East of England. Tucked away on the cobbled side street High Bridge, it’s a charming little eatery that must have been around for the best part of ten years. Genuinely family-run and yes, genuinely Italian speaking – a rarity amongst the rest of the pseudo Italian restaurants in Newcastle. Once upon a time it would just open during the day, but now much expanded and offering a full evening menu. Good wine, fantastic Italian coffee, delicious food, amazing regional specialities, friendly staff. What more can I say? Apart from great prices, of course.

Moose Hockey

Posted by surveyor 30 November 2006

If going here then I recommend staying in the town itself. There is nowhere more than a 15 minute walk, for further afield, the shopping mall strip, there is a free round-town shuttle. The slopes are a 25 minute shuttle away, on time and frequent, for a couple of bucks. I stayed at The Painted Buffalo and they gave away free tickets. For a fun night out, if they are at home, go to the ice rink for a hockey game and support the Jackson Hole Moose.

Skildpadden 'The Turtle'

Posted by DanielaK 29 November 2006

This is a cosy restaurant, great for lunch. The Turtle is in a cellar with a low ceiling, below one of the old buildings in Gråbrødre Torv. You can create your own sandwich and have it toasted at the bar. The food is excellent with good value prices. The casual atmosphere makes these a favourite lunch place.

For me the undisputed jewel of the Alps is the Swiss resort of Champery. The dream combination of a vast skiing area and a charming alpine village crammed full of quaint chalets, with stunning views of ‘Les Dents du Midi’ peaks from all points.

The only downside is the wait (in high season) to take the cable-car at the beginning and end of the day, but this is easily solved by a couple of tips; in the morning, take the free 5 minute bus ride to Grand Paradis and then the new high speed chairlift to Planachaux; in the afternoon ski back down the same way, stopping off at the quintessential mountain restaurant ‘Chez Marius’ for a ‘vin chaud’ as you wait for the sun to start setting.

As for the nightlife, I’d recommend a small bar hidden away on the main street called ‘La Crevasse’, run by two friendly Canadians, who as well as being passionate skiers, have also brought North American style hospitality with a happy hour until 9.00pm, pitchers of beer, cheap cocktails etc. There’s also a small dance floor, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself strutting your merry stuff with your ski boots still on!

The resort is in Canton Valais. The bar is at the top of the main street, under 'Le Pub'

If you need a hearty evening meal in a relaxed and buzzy environment in Verbier, make sure you go to the Fer et Cheval - affectionately known as the 'furry shovel'. Highly recommend the lasagne.

Estate Coffee

Posted by boywandering 29 November 2006

It has the present World Champion Barista, Claus Thomsen working there. The staffs are very friendly. It is non-smoking. The coffee is consistently brilliant. It was started and run by a small group of coffee and chocolate enthusiasts. Really doesn't get much better than that.

At the start of Gammel Kongevej, right beside Urania Cycles (big red neon sign) also a great shop. 200 metres from Vesterport Station.

Really good place to have lunch, down some steps and the sign is the shape of a London Underground sign. Run by a Swedish girl and an Italian guy.

Old Town Bar

Posted by Wilsonbeans 28 November 2006

One of the oldest and most authentic bars in Manhattan.

Frequented by many (it gets busy) but mainly by locals and workers around Grammercy and Union Square.

A very long zinc bar, an amazing tin ceiling, some of the best burgers in town and just a great place to hang out and feel as if you are a part of New York. As with most things in New York, this bar just 'works'...it's a great place.

Dragør

Posted by Engin 28 November 2006

Have a day trip to the beautiful, cosy fishermen’s village on the southeast coast of Amager island.

Have a glass or two of firewater (akvavit) chased with Danish beer accompanied by various herring (sild) specialities, and ponder about the long forgotten (in other words never forgotten) Danish domination over the southern tip of Sweden across the Sound. You will not regret it.

Great cafe close to Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv - without either's high prices. Great sandwiches, good beer, very nice wines.

Free Internet -and a laptop you can use to check your mail, if you haven't brought your own.

The owner is a really nice American guy named Tom.

Le Mandrac

Posted by psydeshow 27 November 2006

This restaurant sits at the water's edge in the picturesque harbour of Volosko, 20 mins drive west of Rijeka.

As one expects, fresh fish stands out on the menu, but there's a good choice of other dishes. The food is top notch and with a fine selection of local and imported wines, this place stands out.

Hallab & Sons

Posted by murphdog 27 November 2006

They say Tripoli is the sweet capital of Lebanon, if not the Middle East. This well-known store is certainly the place to look out for. An incredible variety of sweets, ice creams and all sorts of exotic treats. Try their speciality baklava made with pistachios, walnuts and pine nuts – sweet, syrupy and deliciously sickly.

A gorgeous bar on the 22nd floor of the Reval Hotel, situated by the Europa Tower. Awesome cocktails and a stunning view over the whole of Vilnius. If this were in London it would cost a fortune. Only open from 1600 every day.

Isandlwana Lodge

Posted by Omniscient1 27 November 2006

Magical hotel overlooking Isandlwana plain, an absolutly fantastic view. This is where the Zulu army defeated the British before going to Rorkes Drift where the British defeated them. There's more to it than this and at Isandlwana you'll learn about it. Hotel is 4-star, 10 rooms at half board. It is quite literally in the middle-of-nowhere. Brilliant. A place to go before you die..
