Lake Baikal

Posted by andyfied 26 August 2009

It's the deepest fresh water lake in the world. It's 1.6km deep and has 1/5th of the worlds fresh water in it. Home to fish and seals that are only found there. The surrounding countryside is all beautiful forests. Listvyanka itself is tiny and the only place you can get smoked omul, the best known of the tasty local fish.

You can catch a marshrutka (minibus) or regular bus to Listvyanka from Irkutsk. Irkutsk is on the Trans-Siberian train route and well worth stopping off at for the lake alone.

Dzhagannat

Posted by iaver 26 August 2009

It is a vegetarian restaurant and health food store in the heart of Moscow. Hidden on Kutznetsky Mostly it provides a hippy breathing space from the glitz and glamour of Tverskaya's high street cuisine. Last time I visited it, there were two options: crusty cafe or refined restaurant dining. Preference is determined by price. I went for the crusty and it was good. Although after spending a year living out in Moscow and missing the chickpeas, any place like this would seem Heaven on Earth. It is well worth checking out though.

You don’t have to go all the way to the West Country for an excellent cream tea.
If you plan a visit to Kew Gardens, London then resist the temptations of the refreshment pavilions inside the gardens and save yourself for a special treat just outside.
Exit the Gardens by the Victoria Gate and cross Kew Road to find a quaint half timbered building with a large sign showing ‘Newens - The Original Maids of Honour’ on the front of a tearoom and bakery.
The excellent cream teas here come with all the usual components but with an option of the ‘Maids of Honour’ cakes, usually served warm. Tradition has it that these cakes were enjoyed by Ann Boleyn and her maids when she was being wooed by Henry VIII. They are accompanied by your choice of tea served in delicate blue and white, willow pattern china and if you can’t manage it all then you can always buy some from the bakery to take home for later.

Agriturismo Tennacola

Posted by NorwouldI 21 August 2009

You need to book this little gem a day in advance, but its worth the wait as all ingredients are from Maria's own garden and farmyard including wines honey, fruit and vegetables and most of the poultry. The wild boar is hunted around the ancient village of Sarnano. A visit to Tennacola is like being invited into an Italian home and being treated to the most amazing rustic fayre - a four course meal with wine costs about €20.

Agriturismo Ponte degli Schiavi

Posted by NorwouldI 21 August 2009

Situated on the road between Belforte and Sarnano, this lovely restored farm serves up succulent meals in a lovely garden setting. Most of the food is grown by the owners or sourced locally and the menu always includes something a bit different. Our dishes ranged from a delicious papardelle with goose ragu and a stinging nettle risotto. The antipasti included the best ciauscolo, a local spreadable salami, meats were tender and tasty and the house wine well sourced and a bargain price.

Hotel Terme

Posted by NorwouldI 21 August 2009

Set in one of the oldest buildings outside the medieval Centro Storico of Sarnano, the hotel, positioned in a prime position in the main square, has been lovingly restored with an art nouveaux frontage and lavishly styled bar and ristorante. Food ranges from superb pizzas to home made egg pasta, accompanied by a fine wine list and a very naughty gelateria. Prices for a pasta or pizza dish are a very reasonable €7.

Road leading to Fiagdon

Posted by dondelion 20 August 2009

Great views of the Caucasus mountains in the distance and the road runs alongside the river Fiagdon. There are several decent restaurants along the road all serving Ossetian cuisine. Many of the villages are old so keep an eye out for ancient towers and other buildings. Fiagdon is a small ex mining town and not worth visiting so continue through it to the hamlet of Harisdjin. Here there are nice spots for shashlik and several paths/roads further into the mountains. Past Harsidjin up a steep slope is a picturesque shrine to the Virgin Mary and some ruins of gardens. Nice fishing and cycling here too.

Turn off the road which leads from Vladikavkaz to Alagir

KGB

Posted by Sarah85 20 August 2009

Kiwi Gourmet Burger is pretty similar to GBK in London and New Zealand, offering a wide range of gourmet-influenced burgers. I recommend the delicious (and very meaty) veggie burgers, and the Rooibos iced tea, which always cured my homesickness for South Africa.

Near Taipower MRT station, towards the Shida night market. Come out of the station going towards the market and turn left down a small alley - you'll see the restaurant from the main street.

Badger's Holt

Posted by CharR 18 August 2009

My boyfriend had been promising to take me for ages and we were married by the time I eventually got to experience this wonderful tea room in a beautiful spot on Dartmoor. It was worth the wait. The scones are delicious: homemade to a secret recipe and served with a mountain of clotted cream. But the setting is what really sets this apart. An ideal point to start or finish a walk along the Dart and in the grounds there is an intriguing rescue centre for (mostly) wildfowl. Not just a great cream tea, but a great day out too.

Vegan restaurant that serves great food at real value for money prices. The food can be washed down with an excellent range of bottled beers. Table football is available to help you burn off the calories!
Service was excellent with a very warm welcome on the two nights we ate there.

Almost reluctant to publicise it. In the Brickfields area of KL, on the ground floor of the Temple of Fine Arts - a charitable arts institution. Great vegetarian Indian buffet where you are encouraged not to take more than you can eat and pay what you feel it is worth.

B For Planet Sushi

Posted by whiteibiza 14 August 2009

B For is a restaurant situated in Avenida 8 de Agosto in Ibiza, just close to the famous club Pacha.

The name explains everything, if you are going to B For, you are definitely going to taste some sushi, sashimi and other japanese dishes.

With beautiful interior design, relaxed atmosphere and lounge music, this is the place to go to have a nice dinner before a proper dance night.

I recommend it for its exclusive and relaxed atmosphere.

Olympia Farmers Market

Posted by MissionBells 14 August 2009

In many respects it's quite an ordinary farmers market but Olympian's are incredibly friendly and take their local produce very seriously. Grab a coffee and a gigantic slab of cake from the Marketplace Bakery, enjoy some random conversation and watch great local bands.

Ty Derw B&B

Posted by busymum7 12 August 2009

This must be the best B&B in Wales. The rooms are really bright and comfortable and spotlessly clean and the food is delicious. Nick and Mair the owners are friendly, helpful and great with the children. The surrounding area is beautiful. We have been back time and time again.

Gelateria del Teatro

Posted by paulalikesleopards 12 August 2009

Forget Giolitti's (only really famous because of the number of flavours) - the Gelateria del Teatro on Via di Simone near the Piazza Navona is The best. Many flavours and made on the premises by the family who own and run it, and made with fresh local produce. Reasonable prices too (unlike San Crispino's). The only gelateria to which I gave repeat custom.

El Duque

Posted by Valdage 12 August 2009

This is a relatively new tapas bar/cafeteria just off the main through road of town. It is the second El Duque in Nerja and is run by the son of the family that owns both. It serves a tapas with every drink and has a very good menu that will suit all family members, a great bar to watch the football during the season, especially the big games when all the locals come out. Very entertaining.

Bistro Betws-y-Coed

Posted by stevens1974 10 August 2009

The eating in Betws-y-Coed can be a bit average (mixed grill or curry with half rice/half chips). Which is why we found the Bistro a real bonus. Nice place with a great menu, just make sure you book ahead. Wales is famous for its sheep - this place should be famous for its lamb. Mouth watering stuff. Enjoy.

Aguas Blancas Restaurant

Posted by whiteibiza 10 August 2009

Aguas Blancas means White Waters and is a beautiful beach on the east side of Ibiza with brown sand and a high rock wall behind the beach.

Aguas Blancas is also the name of the sandy-floored restaurant that offer its service in this beach.

I recommend it for three reasons:

- I love the beach and the view there
- Sensational paellas
- Home made ice cream! :-)

This is not a mainstream places like many in Ibiza, but a nice place to see and eat on the east side of the island.
