London Bus Cafe

Posted by Socks 17 December 2005

Genuine London Routemaster bus situated behind the Bolshoi Theatre. Serves pizza, chips and not very tasty sandwiches - but it is a great place for cheapish beer and awful Russian rock music. Candle-lit and full of Moscow skate kids. Looks beautiful in the snow.

Be warned though, the place is smoke-filled and its strongest point is its location.

Nearest metro: Teatralnaya; behind the Bolshoi Theatre. It's just parked up. You can't miss it

City Cafe 317

Posted by jezo 17 December 2005

Generally, beer in Moscow is either crap or very expensive crap pretending to be German at £3 a glass. 317 serves a good pint called Rubinovoe (Ruby) at 70 roubles a go.

The place is relaxing, none of the modern Russian pomp and forced chic. TV with endless reels of fashion walks is, alas, on all the time (muted), but concentrate on beer and you'll be fine.

Find the White House, the seat of government. Turn your back to the river. The very next street to the left of the government compound is the one you need. Nearest metro: Smolenskaya or Krasnopresnenskaya metro

Strumica at night

Cracking good night life in this country city of 50,000 includes airy restaurants and a string of small bars with exuberant young revelers, and a larger outdoor disco in summer.

The Tartufo Gelato (chocolate truffle): made from 70% cocoa chocolate, darkened with cocoa powder; I imagine this is what eating darkness would feel like.

The best kosher restaurant in Rome, specialising in the best of Roman cooking (which is largely Jewish); excellent wines, and especially, excellent price-quality ratio!

Bernachon Passion Chocolatier

Posted by vicky76000 23 November 2005

The most incredible chocolate shop (try the superlative dark chocolate ganache filled and gold-leaf sprinkled speciality) and next-door salon de thé serving exquisite patisseries and petits fours. A great place for a restorative cup of tea/hot chocolate, sadly in the company of the Lyonnais Sloany set when we went.

Baco y Beto

Wonderful wine and tapas bar that is small enough to get to know the owners well and who may even treat you to a glass of cava gratis! The tapas are amazing and the design of the bar is intimate yet light and airy unlike many tapas bars. Very reasonably priced (for a student!).

U Suteru

Posted by thereptilehouse 12 November 2005

An ace restaurant serving traditional Czech grub, U Seturu has a lovely cosy cellar feel about it with some brilliant black and white photographs of the city on the walls. The Goulash in particular is some of the est you'll find anywhere, and the best thing about it is the price: around 200 K per person for a slap up nosh and a glass of beer. They also have an even cheaper (and no less delicious) lunch menu.

Address: Palackeho 2, a little road running between the main streets of Jungmannova and Vodickova in the New Town (Nove Mesto). It is next door to a hotel. There is a tram stop where these two roads meet. Nearest station is Mustek.

The hot spot for young, hungover city dwellers. You're lucky to get a table on a Saturday but try the Hang-over Brunch and, if necessary, order a painkiller pill with it.

Brunch is served from 10-13 except Saturday 10-12 and Sunday 10-15.

Shoniben Yokocho

Posted by ElaineN 4 November 2005

On the east side of Shinjuku station, to the north of the Odakyu department store, look for the alleyways of Shoniben Yokocho - "Piss Alley"!

Don't let the name put you off - this area has loads of small bars selling yakitori. Choose your own kebabs - chicken, tomatoes, fish, pork, etc and have them barbecued as you listen to the banter from the chefs and barmaids to the passing customers. Beer and lemon bitters to drink with the locals, bags of noise and atmosphere and very cheap!

Chez Loury

Posted by Aphollo 3 November 2005

The best bouillabaisse in the town that invented it. A bit dearer than its competitors, but just ask the locals why they eat here. Share one between two for €32 - unless you're really hungry - and wash it down with chilled Côtes-du-Rhône rosé.

3 Rue Fortia, in the restaurant district around Place Thiars just south of the Vieux Port.

I'm rarely disappointed eating out in Tokyo but these places stand out. Davis in Takanwa (the owner is Shoko Davis, married to an eponymous Englishman) has created two fine restaurants. The food is European, the wines are well chosen and surprisingly good value. You eat well, drink well and still have a bill cheaper than all but the cheapest London curry house. They can be a bit difficult to find so ask for a map. The effort is well worth it.

La Bergerie de Planpraz

Posted by rostaylor 27 October 2005

Two thousand metres up and with blissful views, La Bergerie serves a very good gratin and decent steak. Those who are squeamish about offal will want to avoid the andouillette (tripe sausage), which is large and horrible.

But if you're willing to wait for service and don't mind paying over the odds for Evian (water has to be hiked up the mountain), it really is a beautiful spot.

Kolar Beisl

Posted by mseymour 26 October 2005

Bar in Vienna serving filled Fladenbrote (similar to pitta bread). The original one is in the Kleeblattgasse in the first district though there are now three in total. Walk up to the top of the Graben, turn right, walk along and you'll see the Kleeblattgasse which is a narrow little alley. Mixed clientèle, reasonable prices, dark with loud music. Fladen are great though.

Domaine de la Bastide campsite

Posted by JanetC 23 October 2005

A fairly uninspiring municipal (but privately owned) campsite. It has lots of space and shade; there are no marked pitches and the toilet/shower blocks are rather elderly.

But the little onsite bar/restaurant serves amazing, very reasonable evening meals and breakfasts.

On the N110 road south of Crespian (easily missed - look very hard for the entrance signs)

Amarasinghe Guest House

Posted by FiHanks 22 October 2005

This family run guest house is one of the best value places I've ever stayed. Beautiful house with fantastic rooms for $10 a night. Mrs Amarasinghe's rice and curry are also top notch - some of the best in Sri Lanka.
