Sustainable Bolivia provides volunteer placements, family-stay opportunities, Spanish and Quechua language classes and sustainable ecotourism excursions throughout Bolivia. All the people at Sustainable Bolivia were extremely friendly and always looking to help me in any way necessary. I volunteered for 4 months and it was an experience I will never forget. In this time I lived with a family who treated me as if I was their own son. I only took two weeks of language classes but I was extremely satisfied with the instruction and professors. Additionally they have their own travel agency and provided invaluable travel tips.

Puerto Escondido is a fabulous place to stay in Mexico, semi-tropical with miles of white beaches and some hidden paradises. One of the best activities to do is a visit to one of the nearby lagunas, such as Mazunte or Manialtepec. In the lagunas you will find delights such as a turtle sanctuary where baby sea-turtles crawl into your hand and you drink fresh coconut from the shell, mangrove forests filled with thousands of brightly coloured birds and crocodiles (best avoided wherever possible). Although we're not bird-watchers, we went on a tour guided by an ornatholagist and it was absolutely wonderful.

This small Cambodian NGO is where one can go if you want to learn about wildlife, conservation and especially seeing birds in Cambodia. They have partnered with Wildlife Conservation Society and are the conduit to the endangered species found in north-east Cambodia.

The center was created in memory of Sam Veasna, to carry on his work of promoting wildlife conservation and research. It is located in an inviting building, open to the lovely garden, with a library full of resource material, publications for sale and a donation box in the lobby.

The SVC can arrange visits to several remote birding locations where visitors can see such rarities as Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, Bengal Florican and Sarus Crane, and many other bird species.

Lao Pako is an ecotourist resort about 50km from Vientiane. It's set on the banks of the Nam Ngum river out in the countryside - access from the nearest village is by the river in a motorised canoe.

It's a really relaxing place to spend a few days chilling out - reading, swimming, walking, wildlife watching, going on boat trips or visiting local villages. There is a dorm building as well as private rooms and bungalows (costing approx US$6-25), a bar/restaurant and a large terrace overlooking the river. There's no electricity so evenings are pretty low key - playing games, drinking Beer Lao and eating the fantastic local food.

Take the Pakxap bus from Vientiane morning market to Somsamai (about an hour) then get a local boat to Lao Pako (25 mins). For more info tel (856) 2131 2234 or fax (856) 2121 2981;
