The Fish Quay

Posted by AJClark 27 March 2011

In the heart of North Shields, down steeply from the town, is the Fish Quay. The number of boats is minuscule compared to its heyday, but the smell of fish and chips from the many outlets and the buzz from restaurants cannot disguise the working nature of this area still. This is further evident from a glance up the Tyne at the huge oil platform in the yard over the river. Stroll down towards the sadly no more Chain Locker pub to the ferry, nip across the water and head down to the beaches of South Shields or the gracefully curving pier, perhaps calling in at the Alum Rock for a pint of real ale or to the Custom House for some culture.

North Shields metro station and head downhill.

Frier Tuck's fish & chip shop, Heworth

I've been using this shop for years now, the standard of food and service has never faltered. Always great portions, always fresh and always crisp. I highly recommended

Smallfry fish and chips

Posted by Scarbyborg 25 April 2010

A traditional fish and chip shop, the best mushy peas and fabulous fish fried to order. Not open on a Saturday evening (to avoid the riff raff). Fries in vegetable oil.

It's a fish and chip shop, with outdoor barbecue tables, insanely happy serving staff willing to guide you through a totally unrecognizable menu of fish names - very funny if you don't mind them laughing at your accent - huge portions, and the best chips on the continent, all eaten out of paper, serve yourself salt and proper vinegar, (but no peas). Entertainment supplied by local kids competing with the seagulls for spare chips. Awesome view of Chapmans peak and an inlet to the Atlantic, the drive from Cape Town to and over and around Chapmans peak is stunning, especially the last 20 minutes before Hout Bay, an amazingly bend filled road which will generate plenty of adrenalin to fuel the hunger required to make respectable damage to the portions. Fish on the Rocks has become a bit of a family tradition, we generally buy two meals for every three adults, and a bag of chips between two kids - after 40 minutes we are all stuffed and surrounded by equally stuffed seagulls.

This is one of the original fish and chip restaurants in the town. All the people i have spoken to both on holiday and locally, say they are the best they have ever had. The staff are fantastic, it is so clean and the fish and chips are to die for. All this with 10 star views of the harbour, it is a must for anyone visiting St. Ives.

fishers fish and chips

Posted by johncctv 23 September 2009

This one of the best fish and chip, places in London. It has a restaurant as well, cheap and large portions.

Always full in the take-way and the restaurant is a lovely bistro style place, staff a good laugh. The Asian guy who owns it is very funny...

Visit West Beach

Posted by Meddy 7 July 2009

Beautiful sand dunes and walks along the beach. Fantastic fish and chips at West Beach cafe. Go when tide is out for a perfect family beach.

Sandwich your beach visit with a delicious ice cream.

Okay, I'm biased because I live here, but Whitley Bay has one of the best beaches in the world - loads of sand, luscious seaweed, intriguing rock pools and an amazing view north towards the wonderfully photogenic St Mary's Lighthouse.

When you have had enough of exploring the delights left behind by the tide, head up Watts Slope onto Marine Avenue (beside the Spanish City dome which is currently being refurbished) for 'real' fish and chips from one of the many cafes and follow it with a traditionally made Italian ice cream from Delaval Ices at the Cafe Mediterraneo.

They serve the best fish and chips in London. The beer is always served cold. Plus, it's close to several major Tube stations and the Embankment.

Christy's Fish Restaurant

Posted by FishLovers 28 August 2008

Three of us ate at Christy's Fish Restaurant last night and we had a superb meal at very reasonable prices. We chose from the fish specials on the board - two of us had lemon sole, deep fried in batter and one had scampi and chips - the fish was very fresh and moist. We were given a dish of smoked fish pate and shrimp to enjoy while ordering. An excellent bottle of wine completed the meal - none of us could manage a dessert afterwards. We will be back soon to sample the fish pie and skate wings! The dining room is tucked away at the back of a takeaway fish bar and unless you knew it was there, I guess you would drive past, but the dining room was very pretty with a bistro atmosphere, and I should imagine that at the weekends it would be buzzing with fish addicts like us.

Silks Fish and Chips

Posted by harrogate 14 February 2008

This is a very good fish and chip takeaway shop (fish and chip shop of the year 06/07). The largest fish I have ever had! It also has a very pleasant seating area in the garden outside, with lots of free parking which is very rare in Scarborough.

Just outside Scarborough on the Crossgates Road heading to Seamer/Pickering only three miles from the centre of Scarborough. Mainly used by local people which must say a lot.

Fish and chips in Clontarf. I've lived here three years, and have scoured half the city for fish and chips in crunchy batter. They excel. They also do pretty hot fish cakes.

It's 30 yards from the sea. Go for a walk along the seafront first, afterwards, or even during!

West Kirby

Posted by barbwilliams 7 January 2008

A seaside town a train ride from the city centre. Very old fashioned, donkeys, bouncy castle, ice creams, chips from The Marigold Cafe before coming home.

Take a picnic, enjoy sand, windsurfers and, on a good day, jaw-droppingly lovely views of the Welsh coast and Hilbre Island. Only walk to the island if you know what you're doing as the tide comes in fast, often behind you, and it is easy to get stuck!

West Kirby is on the Wirral Peninsular at the end of the M53.Trains every 20/30 mins from Central Liverpool.

Fish and chips at the Observatory

Get your fish and chips from 'Fish at the Rocks', 29 Kent Street, then a quick climb to the Observatory garden for a stunning outlook over the Bridge. A fantastic meal. Or get a cheap early dinner at the restaurant, then go up to gaze at the stars.

Margate attraction

Posted by sbasil 19 October 2007

Perhaps the main attraction of Margate, the Dreamland, is closed but there are more things to see and do with the family on a weekend, like the building of Margate Harbour, the Shell Grotto, the Margate Caves.

Finally for fish and chips try the Marine Sands Cafe.

If you like the Magpie in Whitby (and let's face it, everyone who's been there does) the Mermaid does the same top-class fish and chips with style.

Choose from the old favourites (cod, haddock, scampi) or from the blackboard of current fresh fish. Plus, you get a great view.

Robin Hood's Bay

Posted by mrsfifties 29 May 2007

Cobbled streets, tiny whitewashed cottages tumbling down to a massive expanse of beach, seagulls wheeling - Robin Hood's Bay is a haven of peace. Walk along the cliffs towards Ravenscar, shimmering in the distance, the moors rising above the headland, cloaked in heather. Stroll back along the sands, where there are rock pools and fossils - a happy hunting ground for grown ups and kids.

The light is pearlescent - and the fish & chips at The Bay Hotel very good indeed.
