The Tiffin Room

Posted by chotinho 20 September 2007

The Tiffin Room is a bit of an anomaly - a classy Indian restaurant in the land of cream teas and ice-creams, otherwise known as the Isle of Wight.

It's attached to Bonchurch Manor, a B&B housed in a smart Victorian house with sea views but you don't have to be a guest to eat there. The food is delicious - the masala dosa was the best I've tasted and sea bass cooked in coconut, tamarind and coriander was fantastic.

Standard curry house fare is often too rich and heavy but this food - cooked by B&B owner Shuba Rao - is light and delicately spiced.
The wine list - chosen by Shuba's husband Mark - impressive too and amazingly good value.

Saajan

Posted by Joy25 19 September 2007

Kebab place, because they have real chicken tikka (not that rubbish on a stick). Top naan breads and tasty salad to go with it, I recommend it with all the salad and yogurt and mango chutney.

Elephant Royale, Isle of Dogs

Posted by June Davies 18 September 2007

Excellent setting and service, shame about the food. Very bland!

No taste of coconut in coconut rice! Tasteless prawns.

Very disappointing evening considering the location and high prices.

Food needs to match the wonderful décor.

Au Tout Petit Restaurant

Posted by anneanddavid 17 September 2007

The two of us spent £34 for 3 courses including Kir aperitifs, a carafe of house wine and complimentary digestives - exceptional value for one of the best meals we have ever had.

Beautiful food described and cooked with love said the English-speaking guys who wooed us through the evening. We shared a platter of 3 cold soups: - Gaspacho - crème de petits pois à la menthe - Soupe de melon aux copeaux de jambon cru. This was followed by
Carpaccio de bœuf, vinaigrette de tomate et gingembre confit, glace Wasabi and completed by a crumble aux fruits rouges et pommes, coulis banana. If you can appreciate their love of food and artistic flair then go but it is not for the steak and frites brigade.

The India Club

Posted by Dogon 17 September 2007

You could walk past 100 times without noticing. You certainly wouldn't go in unless someone recommended it. The restaurant is on the second floor of the Strand Continental Hotel, which was popular with Indian intellectuals in the 1930s, and nothing has been changed since, not even the lino on the stairs.

It takes dinginess into a whole new dimension and the service can be a little odd, but it offers really good authentic Indian food at rock-bottom prices. An unforgettable experience.

Le Nemrod

Posted by CaroleBristol 17 September 2007

A nice Left Bank bistro, Le Nemrod is in the Rue du Cherche Midi, just around the corner from the Bon Marche.

Good value for lunch or just a coffee or a pichet of wine - good for Beaujolais. A great place for classic Auvergnate cuisine.

The London House, Eccleshall

Posted by Worldtraveller 17 September 2007

The London House is quite unlike any Indian Restaurant I've ever been to.

It's situated in the large village of Eccleshall about six miles from Stafford. From the outside it's a beautiful old double fronted building; inside it's modern, light and airy.

There is an extensive menu with many house specialities. The staff are lovely, always welcoming and friendly. Despite its rural location, it is always busy. It's worth a trip!

Chicken Cottage, Ilford

Posted by adil0508 17 September 2007

I came across this neat and clean fast food outlet. The nicest thing was the service and food quality, this was a surprise because I have visited many fast food outlets and they are very very different.

They have tasty grilled chicken, bbq sauce chicken and all the normal stuff, they even make homemade smoothies.

Great Kathmandu

Posted by chunk 16 September 2007

An award-winning Nepalese restaurant that I just can't get enough of. In a city of myriad curry restaurants, many of them very mediocre, this cosy little hidden gem sits on a road that also houses two other Nepalese restaurants - but it is undoubtedly the best.

I know people who travel miles to visit this place, as does Peter Crouch, apparently. I find it very difficult walking past on my way back from work, as the smells are to die for. Try the chicken makhanwala.

Makro Vega Restaurant

Posted by calamity23 14 September 2007

Split's only veggie/vegan restaurant. A welcome relief after eating pizza all week!

They have a daily set menu for 50KN (£5) which includes soup, salad and a main meal. Open 9-6pm.

Also just round the corner on Mladenova is the Tonic juice bar selling a variety of fresh juices and smoothies.

Very near MACBA (which is a must-visit). Simply fantastic food. Mains of cod poached in mint and grapefuit oil and seared tuna in wasabi and sesame were both gorgeous. Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

A 70s-designed Tortilleria in Gracia straight out of a film set (think the milk bar in A Clockwork Orange and you are close).

All-white leather and black wall paintings with ridiculous variations on the humble tortilla. Fantastic place full of the pretty people.

The Monro in Liverpool city centre

Posted by AthensKid 11 September 2007

We like real food and do not always find places that cook well. The Monro cooks very well and we had skewered ostrich and a very nice dish called British Classics which I had.

It came in little pots and was traditional local food. We have travelled all over England for the summer and this place is the one we will remember the most. Everyone there looked after us and took the time to explain everything to us.

Food, people and prices are all excellent. You will not be afraid to go back many times.

Le Sergent Recruteur

Posted by SimonMighall 11 September 2007

Forget the guide books that say that most tourist restaurants are a rip off. Try Le Sergent Recruteur on L'ile St Lousis Paris 75004.

Atmposheric premises serving 1st sourse: soup and pate and bread and basket of crudites and basket of sausages (as much as you want!). Then choice of main course, followed by sheese board which is left with you then desserts and as much beer or wine as you want. All for €40.50. I rate it 10/10 for food and ambience.

Pri Yafata, just off of Bul Vitosha

Posted by travelworn 11 September 2007

A group of friends and I decided this June to take a trip to Sofia, probably one of the best decisions of the year.

Pri Yafata is a traditional Bulgarian restaurant, complete with live music, decoration and a vast menu. The food is also very reasonably priced.

This place is also the top recommendation by Lonely Planet and quite rightly so! If you're in Sofia, it's certainly worth a visit.

East to find, just off of the Blvd Vitosha and a short walk east of Makedonia Square. The Lonely Planet guide book gives the best directions as do most hostels and hotels who will no doubt have heard of it!

The Mogul

Posted by DerbyCounty 11 September 2007

Family run Indian restaurant. Great food. I've eaten there loads of times and never had a bad meal.

Freshly baked naan bread and chapatis, not reheated boot leather like some of the other restaurants in this provincial industrial town.

Delightful staff. Well, I like it anyway.

Green Lane, Derby (town centre, round the corner from Debenhams).
