The Swan With Two Nicks

Posted by rubyshoes 24 January 2007

A wonderful, family-run pub in the heart of the city. This amazing old building houses three entirely different bars. Downstairs you'll find a traditional pub with a choice of real ale, a large range of whiskies and great jukebox. Next door there's a huge bar which has live music, DJs and a variety of other events - it's always full at weekends and the atmosphere is great. Upsatirs they have a cool retro 70s style cocktail bar where the cool kids hang out. It's a great place.

New Street, Worcester. Not far from either Shrub Hill or Foregate Street Station.

One of the best Turkish Döner shops in Berlin, open until 6am.

Extremely reasonable, good quality fast food, including vegetarian options. Compared to kebab in the UK, the version here is way tastier, with lots of crispy salad.

The walls are decorated with technicolour murals of how the Pergamon altar might have originally looked in Turkey, pretty different from how it looks in the nearby museum today. Also serves beer, pizza etc.

Under the bridge at the entrance to Friedrichstr Station.

This spot is along the river Rhine, north of Frankfurt between the cities of Mainz (south) and Koblenz (north).

The rock and the surroundings (castles, vineyards) are really impressive and in the villages around (Bacharach, Lorsch), you can really taste good (and not sweet) German wine.

Also try Hotel Fetz in Dorscheid for wine and food. The left side of the river tends to be a bit nicer but there is a jewel of a butcher's shop in a small village called Bornich just above St Goarshausen. The sausages and smoked hams are all hand made right there and the meat comes from local farmers, mainly. You will really find a huge variety of traditional German meats with very friendly service but they take cash only! They are so good, they used to supply Chancellor Schroeder when he visited the area with foreign statesmen/women.

Alatsi Restaurant

Real Cretan food in a nice casual chic environment.

Fresh produce shipped daily from the island of Crete. Owner Stavros Theodorakis, famous Greek journalist is around most nights making sure his guests have a great night out.

Gamopilafo (Cretan risotto served at weddings) is the best you can get outside Crete. Around 40 euros per person including wine and dessert. Reservation recommended.

Mood

Posted by eggpete 22 January 2007

Mood is a bookstore in a lovely square in central Turin, and it's put together a bookstore and a cafe so you can sit down and read the books, while having an espresso or an aperitivo. The interior is modern with an industrial feel.

Forget what you've read in a guide book or heard in whispers, the best frites in Brussels can be found at Place St. Josse. Choose lashings of mayonnaise, pili-pili, cocktail sauce, ketchup or just au natural. Check it out, you will not be sorry!

Wonderful restaurant on the west of the river. Not cheap, but worth every penny for the great food, cocktails, service, view and private river boat. Has traditional dance displays at the weekend.

Tawandang Beer Hall

Posted by Loulie 19 January 2007

Just the maddest restaurant in Thailand. It's an enormous German beer hall that brews its own (very good) beer and seats about 1,500.

They serve German and Thai food and have cabaret every night - a mixture of traditional Thai and pop music. It's mostly Thais who go, and they all seem to be there to celebrate something and the whole place ends up dancing - at least in part because the staff insist on making you dance. Good if you're in a crowd, it's a truly Thai, if unexpected, experience. You'd need to book - it keeps going until about 2am.

Rama III- you'll probably need a cab. See www.tawandang1999.com/en/eng/detail.asp

Big Vern's at St Ouen's Bay

Posted by Tombhoy 16 January 2007

St Ouen's has five miles of unspoilt Atlantic beach and is one of the best surfing spots in northern Europe.

At the mid-point of the bay is Big Vern's beach cafe where the full breakfast will set you up for the day. Note however that at weekends, throughout the year, it is very busy.

Halfway along Five Mile Road.

Bocaito

Ignore the photo of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock they've got hanging from the wall and wedge yourself into this small bar/restaurant for some fine, fine food.

Pedro Almodovar is said to love the place. After a few raciones it's hard to disagree. They deserve recognition for their liberal use of olive oil if nothing else.

The Pork Store

Posted by MsWalker 12 January 2007

Just the name would be enough for a recommendation, but this cafe/diner also has locals and visitors queueing down the street on weekends. The pulled pork, bacon and ham is clearly a main feature, but there's plenty on the typically diner style menu for non-pork or meat eaters.

Oia

Posted by losttraveller 12 January 2007

Melenio cafe is a great place in the centre of Oia. It is on a little terrace and has the best views over Santorini. Very different to the rest of the restaurants/cafes in the village, very relaxed with amazing cakes and fresh juices.

Oia hostel is a great, clean and cheap place to stay (and Santorini certainly isn't cheap). It's very un-hostel like in a positive way and in an excellent location.

Ammoudi port is the best place for a swim in Oia; however the climb back up to the village is pure torture. It is a rocky cove with the clearest water I have ever seen, but space is limited so get there early.

Visiting vineyards is a must, especially as most have small restaurants attached.

Also, Atlantis Books is a rare find of a bookshop anywhere in the world. It is in Oia centre and must be visited, international literature, and the shop is a delight.

La Isla Escondida Restaurant

Posted by ChrisOC 11 January 2007

Buried in the back streets of suburban Lima, surrounded by faceless modern office blocks, lies a rich reward for the intrepid seafood lover.

A cheap painted sign over a metal door leads into the less-than-salubrious interior of the restaurant. But once you get over the decor (or lack of) you’ll notice that the place is packed with locals – a sure sign that the food is what matters there. And it does.

Scallops, crab, the freshest of fish, Pisco, and the ceviche...a hidden treasure.

Peking Duck

Posted by maac56 8 January 2007

Consider going to a restaurant where the locals dine for your Peking Duck. Ok, you may not get the fancy furniture and uniforms that you will get in the touristy restaurants, but what you will get is a restaurant full of character and, of course, local people.

Think about it, if you have been to any of the advertised Peking Duck restaurants for tourists, have you seen many locals ? Of course the answer is probably no. The reason is probably due to the costs involved.

Myself and a few friends went to a restaurant close to a Hutong and had Peking Duck for three people. It cost less than £7.50 for the whole meal including beer and cola, not bad for three people. The portions were very large and we couldn't finish what was served.

Do consider trying a local restaurant, you will be amazed at the reception you will get and the locals will enjoy you as much as you will enjoy the experience of dining with them.

Rosy's Little Village

Posted by Annamargareta 5 January 2007

This is a delightful family-run B&B type hotel. It consists of about 14 small, simple but utterly charming rooms on the edge of the sea, put together round a small courtyard in the style of the old Greek 'village rooms'.

You can swim in the clear sea just below, or you can simply sit on one of the small terraces, drink in hand, and contemplate the view of Aegina across the water. Once there, you may find you have little inclination to move very far! Rosy provides delicious lunches, and in the evening two minutes' stroll will take you to the open-air restaurant, the Alkyone, from where you can continue your contemplation of Aegina and the sea as long as you want.

Chaamu's restaurant

Posted by Casey20 4 January 2007

If you're visiting Paje on the East Coast of Zanzibar you have to visit Mr
Chaamu's restaurant.

An enterprising one-man band, he has set up 3 tables under cover on the beach and offers fantastic seafood dishes with traditional breads.
Bring your own beverages and be sure to book in advance as he sources everything on the day.

Also, ask about his early morning fishing trips. He will take up to 4 people out on his boat to catch the restaurant's fish for the day. He then cooks your catch for you and all of this is done at a fraction of the cost of similar trips at nearby
hotels. An absolute highlight of our holiday!
