Longchamps Hotel

Posted by LindaHeard 18 October 2006

Situated in a boring and slightly scruffy building, this place is a real find. The three-star Longchamps Hotel is on one of the upper floors and, with two large terraces, is one of the most relaxing places in Cairo. Its decor could be described as a mix of elegant, Bohemian and ethnic. But what most people find surprising is the food. Menus are simple but dishes are invariably delicious to the point of being memorable. If you are looking for somewhere inexpensive, quiet, clean and pleasant to stay in Cairo, this is it.

Shawarma

Posted by marcelprout 18 October 2006

A Syrian kebab cannot be beaten. They are available in jaaj (chicken) and lahme (lamb) varieties, including the wonderful local garlic mayonnaise.

Also look out for tabbouleh, the wonderful parsley salad, hummus bi lahm (chickpea puree with meat and pinenuts), felafel and labneh (a yogurt dip).

The Parsi Dairy Farm just around the corner from the Fire Temple is a shop that sells all manner of dairy products that are hard to find elsewhere. Think proper cream that whips, fresh milk, delicious kulfi, superb yoghurt and lassis.

Cafe String

I love Cafe String. It's a really cosy retro-cafe with huge windows made for people-watching. And all the things in there, furniture included, are for sale.

Gloucester Ridge Winery

Posted by lucyd 11 October 2006

This cafe-restaurant also offers wine tastings and sells wine and the terrace overlooks the vineyards and karri forests beyond. It's a good place to stop for a glass of wine if you need to steady your nerves after climbing the Gloucester tree.

Gloucester Ridge Winery (near Gloucester National Park), Burma Road, Pemberton, Western Australia. Open seven days a week, 10am-5pm.

Gibson's Steakhouse

Posted by graham77 11 October 2006

This is a buzzing, upmarket steakhouse on Rush Street. You have to book, especially at weekends, the steaks are awesome (go for the Chicago Cut at around $37). There is also a piano bar next to the restaurant.

Empanadas

Posted by BsAsBlue 10 October 2006

Known as pasties to the English, the Argentinians are experts at these and they are cheap and superb. They come with all sorts of fillings with different crimps to indicate what's in them and regional variations (Catamarquenas from Catamarca, Saltenas from Salta etc). You can have them fried (souffle) or baked (al horno). They are good as a starter before a steak, a quick snack while on the go or finger-food for a party. Lastly, they can be delivered direct to your door, just like everything else in Buenos Aires.

Alex is a great place to meet up with people for a drink or a snack. Sit outside for a great view over the Binnenalster on one side, or watch the shoppers go by on the other.

Acquiring booze

Posted by Hincho 10 October 2006

Whatever you do, remember that Sweden operates a state-run alcohol retail outlet - Systembolaget. This has very precise opening times so make sure you know them, otherwise you will be very frustrated. The good news is that booze bought at the Systembolaget is far cheaper than at bars. There is also a fantastic choice of wine.

Systembolagets are in most towns and have a very distinctive logo.

Garbage plate at Nick Tahou Hots

Posted by arosoff 9 October 2006

A garbage plate is heaven in grease on earth. Generations of University of Rochester students have eaten these. Piles of food (macaroni, fries, burger/hotdog...) covered in spicy ground beef sauce.

Ambala restaurant

Posted by imiflexin 1 October 2006

From the outside it looks very nice and same can be said for the inside. It can be a little cold for my liking. The service is excellent and very professional. The meat somosas are very tasty and same can be said about the seekh kebabs which are brought out sizzling with fried onions.
The mint sauce is excellent with the starters and the main course. The other half didn't like the aloo tikkas. She found them abit tasteless.
Can't comment on any of the vegetable range as we didn't try any. They also do sweets and the prices are very reasonable.

You can also try Anam's which is up the road. They also do a buffet. It is a bit too pricy although the service is very good. They do excellent starters and dessert. The main meals are not quite the same. They taste as if no one has put any effort in them. (I'm asian so I know what I'm talkin about)

You can also try Mumtaz, which is further up the road. This is very nice from inside but the service is terrible and you have to wait quite a bit to get seated.

The Peck food hall

Posted by sucka74 28 September 2006

It is a food lovers dream. Mountains of Meats, cheeses, oils, sauces, fresh vegetables, fresh pasta, pastries and wines. The staff are friendly. You just pick what you want at a stall and are issued a ticket. Take all your tickets to the cashier, pay, then go back to the stalls to collect your foods.

I only wish my suitcase was bigger.

Minshan Hotel

Posted by oldtraveller2 21 September 2006

Four-star, central, very clean, business rooms (£40) have free internet access. Restaurant does weird western food if you can't face Chinese for the 17th night in a row. I had fish fingers and chips with a blob of jam and my partner had mushrooms on toast with a little pool of lemon curd. Gorgeous.

The Soupçon

Posted by GeorgeandSandie 21 September 2006

The Soupçon should not be missed. The atmosphere is relaxing, convivial and unhurried. The menu is short in length but long on quality. Set menus are under £20 pounds, while à la carte starters are around £5-6, with mains under £15. Typical dishes are Provençal fish soup, hot smoked salmon, confit of duck and coquille de poisson. Local products are used whenever possible, while the wine list is short but well up to the task.

French's Fish Shop

Posted by EHill 21 September 2006

It's fish and chips for me from French's at Wells-on-Sea. Such a bore when the queues out the door, but well worth the wait. Open or wrapped? Eat in or take out? Cod, plaice or rock salmon?  Mine's always haddock. Divine crispy batter, lips greased by chips. Watching that waistline? What does it matter! (Closed Monday to go fishing.)

Huts Hamburgers

Posted by Augusta 20 September 2006

The best damn hamburgers in town, this place is an Austin institution. The decor is quirky diner with mementos from the restaurants 50+ years of service on the walls, seriously though, for a piece of genuine American culture, this is the only place to go.

The malts are awesome too...

Honeypot Spice Rack

Posted by Suhail 19 September 2006

Toss the tikka masala and go to eat where Indians eat Indian. Ignore the Harvester-style decor of this pub-turned-curry-joint in a corner of London that is forever India, and prepare to be dazzled by the East African-influenced cuisine that makes most curries taste like the runt of a Big Mac litter. Slobber down crunchy chilli-fried cassava and stunning moushkaki. Add a chilled Kenyan Tusker beer or two. Try the chilli chicken masala, and I warn you — you'll need a Tusker with that baby...
