Ksar Massa

Posted by paulcounter 17 December 2009

On a deserted beach about an hour south of Agadir, there's a stunning hotel called Ksar Massa. It's such a magical peaceful place and a great retreat. It's used by a company called fitscape which arranges fitness holidays. Lots of running on the beach, swimming, cycling, etc. We had an amazing time.

I reached Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre (Kalady, Kochi, Kerala) in a sad state. After working on one of my books and writing several articles for a well known journal, I was physically exhausted and mentally stressed. I had heard and read of the excellent Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre and placed myself in their hands.

I was not disappointed. The ambience and the atmosphere were superb. The centre is situated in a beautiful environment at a river bank and very close to nature. The weather was also magnificent.

The ayurvedic team, led by Dr. K. Krishnan Namboodiri, were professionals to the core, warm and caring. They immediately diagnosed my condition and prescribed suitable treatment for my battered body and tired mind. I had several enjoyable sessions and every part of my body received expert attention –my head, legs, shoulders, tummy, etc were oiled and massaged among other things - I felt totally rejuvenated.

I left as a new man – physically and mentally. I resolved to return a year later for more of the same. In comparison to some over-priced Ayurvedic places, the Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre in Kalady is eminently affordable. The food is good, hygiene is of very high standard, services very friendly and as for the Ayurvedic treatment, it is in a class of its own. I unhesitatingly recommend Nagarjuna Ayurvedic Centre.

This is a beautifully restored Turkish bath dating back to the 14th century. The bath is reserved for women on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.00 - 18.00 hours and for men at all other times.

When I was there, I shared the bath with two local families (from toddler to grandmother). They were all happily and noisily washing each other, feasting on the sumptuous food they had brought along and later dancing and singing to the beat of the upturned plastic wash bowls. Once they had realised that I was not interested in being left in peace I was made to participate in their merry-making. The bath also has a nice rest area, where one can recline on comfortable seats and order coffee/tea or a water pipe. A thoroughly wonderful experience.

About 200 metres south-east of the citadel, near the covered bazaar, everyone will be happy to point out directions

They offer a wide range of treatments including sports therapy, massage, acupuncture, herbal medicine and homeopathy.

I dropped in on a friend's recommendation after having injured myself biking. Their sports therapist soon had me fixed up and on my way.

Learn about traditional Thai massage techniques as applied to oil massage. We did this very well put together one-day course and apart from having a fun day, came away feeling relaxed and happy together.

Don't drink the water!

Water off the tap is supposed to be ok, but few locals do that. They boil it first.

Pilates-en-France

Melanie Geenty has created an idyllic haven that offers a fantastic taste of French life combined with fantastically expert pilates teaching. She is the most amazing hostess and pilates teacher.

Accommodation is in a beautifully restored French farmhouse that exudes tranquillity and relaxation. The meals are delicious and superbly prepared using local produce. This is a great opportunity to relax, re-energise and unwind. I can't wait to return!

The ultimate day spa in the centre of Liverpool, the beauty secret of babes like Abi Clancey, Jennifer Ellison and the cast of Hollyoaks.

I love to visit APt when I am feeling in the need for a little pick-me-up, it's like a weekend break in a spa!

The places in your article on Peru are great but the one thing not mentioned is the altitude and the fact if you fly into Cusco and move too fast when you get off the plane you could easily collapse!

Baby pop up tent shade.

Posted by bijou68 13 September 2007

We've just come back from a very sunny holiday in Estepona. Had a difficult time on the beach with our eight month old son, as he was very hot and starting to burn where the suncream rubbed off.

We found a great Spanish-in-English site selling these baby-sized pop-up tent shade things. Great for his nap too. They sent it to us the next day and didn't charge shipping. Was only about 25 euros too.

Coca tea

At that altitude, you may need the local brew, and not Cusquena!

Eating small meals and drinking little alcohol will help too - I learned the latter the hard way.

Staying in the Silom area

Posted by zetland 24 January 2007

We stayed in Silom and found it central to the Skytrain. It was so easy to get to Patpong and all other areas and the locals are really friendly.

For fair skinned girls it would be advisable to take a sun brolly. We found it near impossible to get one in Bangkok but the heat makes it hard to cope with if you don't have one.

bottled water

Reuse your water bottles- there's a wee shop just past the sunrise cafe that sells boiled and filtered water that is perfectly drinkable if you've been in the country a few weeks.

They also sell local Tibetan-made handicraft, like books of recycled paper and so on.

Five-star accommodation and thermal spa designed by Hundertwasser, Austria's most famous architect and artist.

Easily reached by taxi from Graz airport (fly direct from Stansted), this place is a wonderland - a cross between Gaudi and Mondrian, hidden in the hills. All food organic, outdoor and indoor baths, massage, reflexology etc and all for 120 euro per night.

Acres and acres of land on which you can take a hike, horse riding, yoga, etc. Bliss, bliss, bliss!

Sabai-Sabai

The best possible Thai massage. Step out of a Hungarian street (Terez Korut) into a courtyard, and then into a charmingly shabby Bangkok environment - Thai pop music on the cassette, incense. Book an hour if you must, but an hour and a half of every muscle being given an extraordinary workout costs only 7,000 HuF. Charming girls - an experience not to be missed.

Marrakech is a wonderful city but mad and you'll want to wind down and there's no better place than here. Have a hammam and then follow it up with a massage all for under £30! Such beautiful relaxing surroundings. I didn't want to leave.

fort chapora

Posted by sorryimdrunk 30 October 2006

Ok, so it's a fort, but its beach is supposed to be the best in Goa, and its easy to find -just get a bus north, and get out at the end, that's what we did, there's a couple of beach cafes, but its fairly unspoilt. Watch out for the sand, where it's black it burns, also watch out for sea snakes. Don't eat the ice creams, but eat yogurt every day. Don't believe what you're told - if you ask a question, ask at least two other people. Beware, you're in paradise, so even the smallest thing can make you irritated. Oh, and dont get a tattoo, septicaemia in a tropical climate - ugh!

Like most Indonesian towns, Bogor has its juice bars where you can ask for any combination of freshly sliced and blended tropical fruits mixed with ice and a little condensed milk if you wish. I suppose we'd call them smoothies in the UK, but here you see the fruit cut up and blended right in front of you! Try strawberry and a little lime (strawberry dan jeruk nipis) or mango (mangga) or soursop (sirsak). The best one in Bogor is a little shack in a side street just by the big Hero supermarket on the main road as you enter Bogor by road. It's opposite the main mosque.

While you're there, try the boiled noodles with chicken bits (mi sama ayam).

Is it safe to eat? My family lived there for 7 years and never got sick from eating at places like that - just look for the places popular with the locals and you can't go wrong.

By the way - the local buses (angkot) are safe. You just need to know the fare (it's the same for any bus no matter how far you go) and, as ever, don't have your wallet/camera vulnerable. I had only one theft attempt in 200+ rides.

Chiropractor

Posted by ewanwallace 1 February 2006

Not everyone’s convinced by chiropractic, but a couple of sessions can really help to realign your body and smooth out any mysterious aches and pains – ideal if you’ve spent all day giving yourself a thorough battering on the mountain. Whistler Chiropractic are very good, though there are plenty of others you can try.
