A gorgeous, laid back small hostel in a lovely old building in the beautiful medieval town of Ulm in Southern Germany. The owner is charming and helpful, the common spaces such as the sweet kitchen, are warm and inviting with interesting retro furniture. The rooms are spacious and characterful with high ceilings and the shared bathrooms and loos are spotless. Ulm itself, a town built on the Danube river, is a few minutes walk and delights with narrow cobblestone streets with Hansel and Gretel houses and a huge choice of very good restaurants - definitely worth a few days of your time if you are in southern Germany. There's a great pop art exhibition - American Idols - on at the moment in Ulm's modernist art gallery with Andy Warhol et al. Oh yeah and I suppose you should know it has the highest church steeple in the world and Albert Einstein was born there! Visit the Museum of Bread Culture while there too - an adorable quirky museum that has lots of art works related to bread, including by Dali, Chagall and Banksy (!)... Enjoy!

Because I was on my own and wanted company of an evening, I elected to stay each night in a youth hostel. This turned out to be a great idea and, besides having a wide variety of different people to chat with in the evening, I stayed in some splendid buildings and ate authentic Italian food (altho' not at all hostels). And of course, they're incredibly cheap!
Just be aware that some of the hostels can be tricky to find - I'd no satnav with me so spent a good deal of time asking passersby for directions; very basic Italian got me by.

Beautiful mountain walks, excellent bird watching and ridiculously starry skies at night. Very delicious dinners cooked by ex-chef. Quiet quiet quiet village but not far from Ronda which is classic old school Hemingway style Spain. Watch out for hidden car hire costs, be sure to get the deal where you bring the car back FULL of petrol. You can add that as an option when you search comparison sites.

After finishing my A-levels, my best friend Lucy and I booked a girls holiday. No, it wasn't to Magaluf or Ibiza. We wanted somewhere that was both cultural, cheap and a good party. After finding flights for a reasonable price, we settled on Barcelona. For around 300 Euros, we stayed in a great hostel just around the corner from La Ramblas, just next to the Metro and within walking distance from all the best night clubs and a short ride to all of the excellent attractions that Barcelona has to offer. We spent a week in the city, beach and parks, managing to find cheap enough places to eat, drink and party. On a budget, we managed to have the best holiday and it's so easy to adapt a trip to Barcelona to your traveling style. There's plenty for families, older couples, friends, everything. I'm definitely planning on taking my parents there in the near future and my own family when I have one. Art galleries, Gaudi, food, anything you're interested in will be in Barcelona and so long as you know where to look, it can be as affordable as you like.

Certaldo Alta is a short train ride from Florence. The new part is less interesting, apart from a twice weekly market so head for the old part, Certaldo Alta either on foot or using the cable car from the square. Here you will find a lovely Tuscan hill town with few tourists, some interesting history and quiet bars and restaurants. In the summer there is a music and arts festival so you can listen to jazz in part of an old church surrounded by ancient frescoes. Even better, stay for the night in the nearby Fattoria Basseto, a former Benedictine convent, that is now a budget hotel and hostel. In one of the rooms there is a black and white photograph of the family who still own it, taken in the 1950's by Cecil Beaton. The owners are lovely, you will want to stay, arrange a cooking class at a nearby farm, and not return to Florence!

I stayed at Friends on Griboedova, but they have some other location in the center as well – somewhere near Nevsky prospect and on Vosstania street. The one on Griboedova is clean, cosy and very comfortable. The staff are really friendly, they just act as friends – no wonder, since they work at “Friends hostel”. Yes, the famous TV show has something to do with the interior design – brick walls, board games, bicycles and homely atmosphere. Staff speak very good English and they help you very good. They have dorms and privates. Shared bathrooms, of course. Lots of biscuits, free tea & WIFI. I really recommend Friends hostel to anyone.

Facing westward towards Cape Wrath and the towering sea-cliffs of Clo Mor, the beach and extensive sand dunes are wonderfully devoid of any detracting 'tourist infrastructure'; so this will appeal to the more active/outdoor visitor. The nearby rocky shoreline abounds with a great diversity of sea-birds - Puffins, Terns, Razorbills, Fulmars, Kittiwakes and Gannets. The underwater scenery is equally mesmerising and the clarity of the water compares with the Caribbean. For good measure, don't miss a visit to the massive Smoo Cave on the eastern seashore of Durness. Accommodation in Durness includes the Youth Hostel (SYHA) and the Lazy Crofter Bunkhouse.

The journey starts through gentle woodland on a dedicated cycle path before taking you through the dramatic slate quarries of Bethesda.
After this a breathtaking panorama of the Ogwen valley is yours to enjoy. You follow a small, tarmac trail with little traffic. Finally get ready for a short but very steep climb to finish the trip. (You could walk it if you wanted. It's short, but steep.)
At the end of your journey you'll find the Idwal cottage youth hostel which is perfect for an overnight stay. There is also the Cwm Idwal nature reserve for a beautiful walk or a wild swim!

We’d managed two steps and gingerly turned back as today, despite wearing thick soled walking boots, the great stones strung across the River Dove were slippery as giant ice cubes.
Luckily the man we were watching regained his balance and made it. It was a fun end to a hilly, winters' day walk, which had started at Ilam Hall across Lin Dale to the River Dove, frost glittering in the hollows, sunlight bouncing off the pyramid-shaped, Thorpe Cloud hill as we made our way down the limestone gorge where a walk along the riverside leads to the steps. A circular route back led us over fields, past the Izak Walton Hotel, named for the author of ’The Compleat Angler’ back to Ilam Hall and its welcoming tearoom.

This lovely spot is run by a Colombian-Kiwi couple and has amazing views. They make yummy healthy food and Diego takes guests for a walk through the forest on their property - lots of butterflies, bird and orchids! You can stay in their guesthouse or visit from the day from Manizales to have a meal and a walk. The sunsets are amazing - the perfect spot for a cocktail!

We spent five days here in August. More towards a hostel rather than a hotel with a mix of rooms, from rooms with private bathrooms to beds in dorms with shared bathrooms.
For our room with the private bathroom we spent 33JD per night. Citadel and amphitheatre are on the doorstep.
There is a communal room where people can eat or meet other backpackers/travellers.
The hostel can arrange trips. They organised a car to take us and two other guests to Mount Nebo and the Dead Sea for 20JD (not including admission fees). Additionally they can arrange cars to and from the airport or to the Jordanian border.
Good breakfast served in the morning.
Staff always on hand (with perfect English) to assist with any queries such as how to handle taxi drivers etc.
Not luxurious but safe, comfortable and friendly.

There are many hostels all over the continent, each with its own character.
You'll get lots of information and support from hostelers and the staff, and usually access to a kitchen to cook your own meals. You can be any age and many hostels have private doubles, twins, triples etc - some even ensuite!
PS In Patagonia don't miss the Perito Moreno Glacier - the boat goes dramtically close to the edge which is crumbling into the lake.

On a searingly hot day in the Argentina summer we turned up in town and staggered into the Adventure Hostel. Rooms are simple but clean, with air-con (essential in this climate.) It has a well equipped kitchen, and a great breakfast by Argentine standards with home made potato cake. However the main draw are the family-friendly facilities, with lots of games, play area, plenty of outdoor space, barbeque pits, hammocks, and excellent cooling swimming pool. Great place for chilling, watching the jungle wildlife, or exploring the nearby Jesuit ruins and surrounding area. You could, and will, get stuck here ...

It also has a nice terrace facing the big garden from which you can help yourself with seasonal fruits and vegetables or where you can have a barbeque. It is located in a quite residential area on the river bank, very close to the centre of the city.
