Okay, so you are not really going to live like a king at this place. The rumour goes that it used to be filled to bursting with NGO staff, but now times are hard and the rooms are vacant. So for under $10 for a double room with fan, bathroom and cable TV, who's complaining?

Or just let the touts bundle you into the minibus at your point of arrival.
A lovely hotel with super-friendly, English-speaking staff and a great design. Staff will pick you up from the bus and help you arrange tours and cooking courses.
Free wifi, and a beautiful, chilled-out garden, too. Easily the best hotel in our three weeks of travelling around Vietnam.
We definitely do not recommend this hotel. Despite its pretty rooms and good location, the manager decided three days into our stay our room rate was higher than what we were quoted when we arrived. When we disputed this he made up the difference by adding taxes and beefing up the phone and laundry charges. The guys who work there appeared drunk.
You'll also get asked a hundred times about your plans and they'll try to sell their tours - though this is much the same across the entire city.

Hey, surfing the net I have found this useful travel guide that gives tons of tips to the independent travellers! Furthermore, I think it is a good source of information because you can deal with hotel's official sites, avoiding paying commission to intermediaries.

This is a fantastic hotel right in the centre of the city's swanky Golden Triangle district. A top class hotel at a pretty reasonable price, friendly staff and nice pool too.

This hotel is part of the Habaguanex group which a friend recommended to me. You should pre-book in the UK as you will get a better rate than you will otherwise. Located close to the Plaza Vieja it is an art nouveau style building - we had a beautifully furnished room on the top floor which was vast. Breakfast was good too. It was very tranquil in the first week in November but at peak times it might be less so. Good view from the roof terrace.
This hotel is in a beautiful and peaceful spot, owners are great hosts, food excellent, accommodation comfortable and well appointed. A wonderful place to relax and unwind. What more can you want?

It's close to the SCG, the beers are reasonably priced and the staff and regulars are friendly. Oh, and you can get a decent meal there too.

This is a great two-star hotel (breakfast only - quiet bar) brilliantly located less than 100m from the foot of La Flegere so it's an easy walk even in boots. The Flegere ski area is wonderful for skiers up to good intermediate skill level, with easy access, short queues, a range of eateries and offering wonderful views of the Mt Blanc range to the south. The hotel is simple but very comfortable and cosy and a number of the rooms have balconies with incredible views of Mt Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi.
There are two ski hire shops close by which offer discounts to guests. The free bus stops right outside the hotel so access to the rest of the Chamonix Valley ski areas couldn't be easier. To top it off, there is a truly lovely tree-lined snowy walking trail between Les Praz and Chamonix central (25mins) which winds it's way along the banks of the River l'Arve and is well lit at night - a terrific way to ease those weary legs at the end of the day as you head into town to party.
If you don't want the nightlife, the Hotel Eden (50 metres walk) offers a really good restaurant with a fine wine list. Parking is easy at the Hotel Les Rhododendrons or the hotel staff can organise a pick up from Geneva.
Prices: 53 euros single, up to 118 euros for a quadruple room. Booking is easy, efficient and reliable using the web.

Welcoming three-star hotel in a delightful location on a canal and five minutes' walk from the centre of the town. Family-friendly with pleasant bedrooms and a sunny breakfast room. Reasonably priced too. Staying here was an altogether enjoyable experience.

A hotel and restaurant on Ieper's main square. Old Tom offers decent accommodation at an attractive price, and the restaurant does some of the best (traditional Flemish) food in town. Convenient for the local attractions, and the welcome is friendly.

Three-star hotel on Sonnenstrasse, just off the end of Kaufingerstrasse and handy for central sights such as Marienplatz and Frauenkirche as well as the Hauptbahnhof. Modern and friendly with a pleasant breakfast room on the first floor. I stayed in an en suite double room (in 2003) for a very reasonable 65 euros a night.

A fabulous environment rising above the predictable trend for minimalist chic to provide sumptuous luxury and impeccable service. The only flaw is the nightclub, which is more akin to a wedding disco with an appalling music policy.

Spend a night or more right in the Albert Dock. You might think a Premier Lodge is a Premier Lodge, but this one is a bit special vith vaulted brick ceilings and cast iron pillars, and with a bit of luck you'll have a view over the Albert Dock. And it's a walk or short cab ride to anywhere in the city - Pier Head, Tate Gallery, cathedrals, university shops, football stadia, theatres and the wonderful fountain in Williamson Square where every one smiles…

We were on a stag trip to Hotel X-Dream. Billed as a stag hotel. Could not be anything worse. We were ripped off from the minute we landed. We booked an airport pick-up. Did not arrive, no apologies. The rooms were tiny could not even stand up. More like a broom cupboard. We booked the sauna and pool for the afternoon with strip shows. Turned out to be one 5 minute strip with a suspect woman and that was it for £20 each. Booked the bobsleigh trip for £20, bus did not turn up - waited for 4 hours (wasted) and did not get our money back. All 15 of us were so wound up we went and sat in the airport 4 hours early just to get out of the place! No aplogies! In fact the receptionist told us being English we should expect to pay prices like these. Yes but in the UK we get what we pay for!
