After the obligatory surf lesson with Surf's Up we tried an afternoon's kayaking with Matt from Cornish Rock Tors. We pootled around some lovely coastline around Port Gaverne and even saw a seal. Kids had a great time. Top fun.

    Chateau Adventure

Posted by josephwalker 10 April 2008

An enchantingly atmospheric chateau, unspoilt by renovations, gave us a fabulously relaxing stay in the Dordogne coupled with a well organised range of activities from kayaking to guided walks and hang gliding to horse riding. Lots of supervised activities for the kids and gentler ones for us! Would definitely go again.

    Moran State Park, Orcas Island

Posted by namztis 19 February 2008

The San Juan Islands, a two-hour ferry ride out of Anacortes, Washington, are a great destination for outdoor recreation.

Moran State Park on Orcas Island has lovely scenic campsites with excellent access to hiking, biking, swimming, and boating. The view from the lookout on Mt. Constitution is well worth the hike (or drive).

Orca whale-watching is best off of nearby San Juan Island, where you can also visit the charming village of Friday Harbor.

For more information, and to make reservations (recommended!), visit the Washington State Parks Website:

    Dalarö Kajak

Posted by DanielB 11 October 2007

This is a perfect place for sea-kayaking in the south part of Stockholm archipelago. A lot of beautiful islands where you can camp. You can borrow a map of the area and get suggestions and help were to kayak and where to camp.

There are organised trips to kayak down the river from Vang Vieng to Vientiene - well, a mini bus takes you for about an hour at each end but you kayak for most of the way. The river is beautiful and the guides are excellent, even cooking up a barbie on the rocks for lunch! You get to go through some white-water, which is exhillarating, and there's a huge rock jump for the brave en route. The whole day is brilliant fun and beats the pants off the 7 hour drive in a cramped minibus over mile upon mile of unmade road.

    Off the beaten track

    • Bohemian San Tropez atmosphere in Cadaqués, former artistic refuge to Dali and Picasso

    • Calella de Palafrugell for its postcard prettiness and the havanera (sea shanty) concerts every July, without forgetting the Costa Brava Jazz festival perched on top of a cliff in a botanical garden

    • Medes Islands by kayak with a tutor-guide where you’ll be able to check out the local fauna. Just as long as you want to (you don’t have to know how to) row and don’t mind falling out (you do have to know how to swim!)

    • Little gems of sheltered and untouched coves in Pas, Moll Grec and the my favourite la Fosca in Palamós

    • La Cerdyana, pijolàndia (yuppyville) or area of outstanding beauty, you decide

    • Vall d’Aran, beautiful landscape, Romanesque churches, great skiing and extremely cold

    Atlantic Kayak Company

Posted by Tripod 14 November 2005

Go on a tour with the Atlantic Kayak Company to see the nation's monuments from the Potomac River or head north on the Potomac and see wildlife not expected in a capital city. The instructors are great and you see DC from a view not frequented by many!
