These little beauties are brilliant for backpackers as they combine a map and guide in one and they look amazing - a real antidote to our ever increasing digital world. They appear hand drawn and painted with insider tips written on them. They cover 10 cities (inc Shanghai) so far and each one comes with an access code to use at www.alacartemaps.com where you can build your own travel itineraries - how cool

They are being sold online at www.alacartemaps.com as well as good bookstores

Getting two maps

Posted by RobGuv 1 April 2010

Maps in Korea come in many languages but unfortunately they aren't usually bilingual. In countries that use the Roman alphabet this isn't usually a huge problem but with Korean (and other languages that use a different alphabet) this can cause some problems because the romanised Korean on most maps is frankly appalling and taxi drivers and the like will very often not understand you. Getting two maps, one in English and one in Korean however means you can navigate the English map and just point to the corresponding place on the Korean map, hopefully reducing the number of times you end up in the wrong place (although hopefully not completely eliminating this rite of passage for travellers.)

NYC bicycle information

Posted by georgef 16 April 2008

Get the NYC DOT bicycle map (download or free at bike shops). Also note DOT has information on bridge closings. Sometimes if a bridge is closed they have a free van service. Stick to the paths on the map, watch out for pedestrians, and car doors. Good luck.

www.bikeforums.net is a good source of info. See info on avoiding bike theft. Hint: get a strong U lock and take the seat post with you.

Consider buying a folding bicycle in NYC and returning with it. bfold.com, nycewheels.com and others have folding bikes. Strida would be a good bicycle for touring NYC. Dahon make very nice general purpose folding bikes. Folding bikes can usually be brought on the subway and trains. A bit iffy on crowded buses.

This is a comprehensive guide to taking the subway in Tokyo and provides links to an English map and an online planning tool. It's very useful whether you live in Tokyo or are just planning a visit. The site also offers travel tips and reviews.

Really nice to be able to find walks and country routes when you are off the main drag.

The Map Shop is run by a very helpful man who will match a map to your requirements and it is always surprisingly cheap (think we paid about six pounds per map and they always arrive the next day, which has proved v useful!)

We found the
Mapa Provincial Granada, Direccion General del Instituto Geografico Nacional, Ministerio de Fomento useful, but also bought Parque Natural, Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama.

Old Cairo maps

Posted by marcelprout 12 February 2007

SPARE maps of the old Islamic city are head and shoulders above any other maps available on the market.

Available at Lehnert and Landrock and decent bookshops like Diwan.

If you want to do something different in Cairo, get a SPARE map (there are at least 4), take a taxi to Khan el Khalili and go for a walk. All of the relevant buildings are marked in the maps, together with a bit of history. Take yourself back to the 1400s.

Cairo was one of the most important cities in the world in the late middle ages and the architecture in Islamic Cairo proves it.

When you're finished, treat yourself to a bowl of kushari.

This is the best tourist map of Chiang Mai and I recommend this above any other map or guidebook. It is especially good if you want to SHOP!.
It is available from major bookstores in Bangkok. If you want to buy it before you leave it might be difficult to find. The only place I have found is www.tripneeds.com. They seem to have other maps of Thailand as well.

I found getting from Baden-Baden Airport (Karlsruhe-Baden) to Baden-Baden town a little tricky so here's some help.
When leaving the airport take Bus 205 signed to Baden-Baden, this takes you to Baden-Baden train station (Bahnhof Baden-Baden) not the town centre. Here change to Bus 201 to Leopoldsplatz which will take you to Baden-Baden itself (for Caracalla-Therme/ Friedrichsbad Spa etc).

Bus 205 (or any airport express) doesn't run on a Sunday however, so you have to take a taxi from Bahnhof Baden-Baden to the Airport - be warned (around 30 Euros).

It's worth printing this bus map out before you go to avoid an hour or so of confusion like I had.

Getting around

Posted by Ieuan 13 December 2006

Buy an ACCURATE city map from Librairie DSM, which should set you back around 45dh (£3). The one from the tourist office is free, but very poor. Or ask a taxi driver for the district you require - and always insist on the meter (tho' if they refuse to set it, you only have to pay the minimum fare of 7dh, no matter how far they drive).

Buy an Ordnance Survey map

Posted by annieoakley 1 December 2006

Get the 50000 or 25000 scale and you can find all the footpaths which means you can spend the day walking, not driving. Even better, choose a place to stay close to lots of footpaths and Rights of Way. Pubs are marked too, so you can find a place for lunch.

Look out for the free city maps as you come through the airport on your way in; they are on a stand in baggage reclaim, right after immigration. The maps are up-to-date, colourful and have the major attractions, hotels and shopping malls clearly marked. I get one every time I go through.

Nancy Chandler map

Posted by antstamp 5 December 2005

It's a tourist map with the emphasis on shopping. I agree with the postings that say it's useful, but don't rely on it alone. Unfortunately, Chandler's calligraphic excesses sometimes get in the way of simple navigation. She's good for telling you where the shops are, but she'd never get a job with Ordnance Survey.

Buy it in hostels and tourist areas.
