A modern designer hotel in the youthful and vibrant Bastille area of Paris, the Color Design Hotel reflects well the atmosphere of the neighbourhood and is true to its name with its contemporary, trendy and colourful design. The location is fantastic, the hotel is absolutely fabulous, the staff were OK - really nice but a bit disorganized. If you want to see the real face of Paris and are after a memorable experience, Color Design Hotel is a great option.
An excellent modern hotel in the Shidome district, with staggering views in every direction, and extremely helpful staff, this hotel is close to metro and JR stations, and within walking distance of the fish market, Ginza, and numerous reasonably priced restaurants. The hotel itself has a Michelin starred restaurant serving traditional Japanese food.
Our only quibble was that like many things in Japan the entrance to the hotel is so understated that it is easily missed, so it is rather hard to find when arriving jet-lagged from the train. Limousine bus would be better, as it goes straight there.
Shiodome Media Tower, Minato-Ku, near JR Shimbashi station. All details and a good map are on hotel website www.parkhoteltokyo.com
This is a modern hotel with excellent facilities and tasteful décor. It represents fantastic value for money if booked online (double rooms can be had for as little as £35 per room including breakfast). It is situated in a southern suburb of the city that has interesting bars, restaurants, market stalls and shops frequented by the locals. Some real bargains can be found here. The only drawback is the distance from the centre of Beijing and the fact that taxi drivers don’t know where it is – be sure to pick up the hotel’s card at reception with detailed directions. It is, however, ideal for visiting the nearby Temple of Heaven Park.

Staying at this intimate boutique hotel in the swanky Condesa district is like being inside an iPod. Sparkling white, curvy and beautifully designed, the hotel is modern, minimal Mexico (which sounds like a paradox), staffed by groovy, black-suited Gael Garcia Bernal look-alikes. The best things are the roof-top bar, a funky patio restaurant, rooms with individual arthouse DVD libraries, and refreshingly low prices. I also loved the house rules, which sternly stipulate: "No weapons, no animals, and no musicians".
