There is a beautiful sanctuary about a kilometre out of town where you can see all sorts of wildlife such as monkeys and lizards, with beautiful views over the Baia dos Golfinhos back towards Pipa. Only R$5 for entry and definitely worth it.
It's a half an hour walk if you just follow the main road out of town, or just hop on a collectivo and ask for 'o santuario'!

For those staying in Johannesburg, and want to get away from the malls and the bustle of the city then in easy driving distance are two great places. If wildlife is what you want to see and Kruger is too far away, then head to the Pilanesberg game reserve. You can see all of the 'Big Five' there, and is located in the fantastic crater of a former volcano. It is quite a distance for one night, so visitors could go to Sun City, which is very close to the game reserve.
The other place near Johannesburg is Magaliesberg, which has a wide array of things to do.

If visitors want stunning scenery, then I would definitely encourage people to head out to Hogsback in the Amatola Mountain range (though the only way to get there is via car). Here you will find a tranquil, mountain top village, with amazing walks, stunning waterfalls, deep forests and some amazing mountains. Loads of accommodation there, and some really nice restaurants and bars too.

The Dana Guesthouse is perched on the edge of the spectacular Wadi Dana canyon in the Dana nature reserve in southern Jordan.
It one of the most peaceful and relaxing places you can stay in the whole country, with only 9 rooms and amazing views. You can hike in the wilderness by day and gaze at starry night skies whilst contributing to Jordan's foresighted sustainable eco-tourism.
You will also be greeted with very warm hospitality and fantastic local organic food. Simple, wild, luxury.

The beach at Maria la Gorda ('Fat Mary') is said to be named after a Venezualan courtesan abandoned there by pirates once upon a time.
It's in the Cabo San Antonio nature reserve on the remote south western corner of Cuba. In 1999 it was the idyllic home of a little scuba diving school, six or seven chalets and a cocktail bar.
We hired a car in Havana and drove south west via Pinar del Rio. The journey took four or five hours, and we gave lifts to Cubans who gave us directions.
