Local Beers and Buffalo Burgers

Posted by bladeaway 4 November 2007

Lots of excellent beers often in the British style locally brewed, available in bars (such as the Sport Bar on Main St) and stores to take back to the bungalow/cabin/camper. Mind the elk if you're walking back late. Burgers the size of an elk.

Museo Chillida Leku

Posted by ldn2mcr 4 November 2007

Eduardo Chillida is a much-loved Basque son and his sculpture can be enjoyed at many locations in the region, including the breathtaking Wind Comb work, which looks out to sea on the edge of La Concha. But it is also well worth a trip to the Chillida-Lexu sculpture park, which is a short drive outside the city.

Chillida and his wife bought the estate the park lies on in the eighties, restoring the 16th century farmhouse on the grounds and eventually turning the gardens into an outdoor museum.

Today, posthumously, it remains a site for fans to come and observe the artist's vision. The stark realist sculptures set on the green Basque landscape is quite a sight to behold.

Arusha Park

Posted by bladeaway 2 November 2007

Little visited and close by, Arusha Park is scenic with great views of (and includes) Mt Meru, and has its own crater, forests and lakes, some laden with salts. There are giraffe, buffalo, colobus, flamingo and lots of birds, and a few hippo left in what was once their biggest home in Tanzania. Quiet and peaceful compared to the main parks.

A few miles east of Arusha on the Moshi road, lots of local safari operators will do a full or half day, or you can climb Meru on a 3 day tough trek

Right in the heart of HK is a lush haven that provides a welcome break from the crowded city. Go to Hong Kong Park before the shops open and walk around the beautiful Botanical Garden (which has a zoo) - don't forget the amazing walk-through aviary.

St Annes Park

Posted by ktopping 21 October 2007

Every time I go there I discover something new: open spaces, extensive rose gardens, cool playground, woods, streams, ponds, ruins, pitch'n'putt next door, nice coffee, small Saturday market.

North Dublin, next to Coast Road. Killester Dart station's probably the closest - about 5mins walk (but we usually drive or bus it - Coast Road has lots of buses)

Secret park

Posted by Anthony Zacharzewski 15 October 2007

If you’re heading east from Paris and you’ve got some time to kill, there’s a quiet little park hidden away about 20m from the Gare de l’Est, but not that easy to find.

Stand with your back to the station and head down the road on the left, to the corner. Look for a green metal gate down the side of the rather imposing stone building. It leads into a small ornamental park with a great kids’ playground, and public toilets and baby change on the far side of the park.

Sealer's cove

Posted by okkeroz 13 October 2007

It's a two hour hike to this little bit of Thai splendour a couple of hours from Melbourne. A forested swamp meets the sea in a golden crescent of sand hemmed in by mountains. Granite headlands keep the warm, clear waters nice and calm; continue on to Refuge Cove (2hrs) for a more exclusive swim before a long walk out.

The most interesting park at the Eastern Cape, about 50 miles from Port Elisabeth airport. The best way to get there is by renting a car or by organised coach tours.

Spectacles at Versailles

Posted by Joanna King 3 October 2007

The grounds of Parc du Chateau de Versailles are beautiful and particularly worth a visit during April through to September when they are host to different spectacles.

The events are a true feast for the senses and lie only a 20 minute RER journey off the typical tourist route. An unforgettable experience.

Visit the Parc de Citroen

Posted by Jude Brooks 1 October 2007

Make sure you visit the Parc de Citroen. Built on what used to be wasteland, it's a shining example of garden design in that it fuses the surrounding buildings into the planting and landscaping. Whatever the season, it's so worth a stroll - calming yet impressive.

Westbad Pool

Posted by rsolomon 28 September 2007

Public swimming pool complex at the Westbad tram stop. Just follow the scent of chlorine from the tram. Entrance was nine euro last time I visited.

Inside there's a water slide, a whirlpool, heated mineral bath, sauna and swimming lanes. Good place to take kids on a rainy holiday. Outside there are even more pools, plenty of grass to lay about and sometimes ducks come down to swim laps in the pools.

Take the kids to Astridpark

Posted by Tracey Phillipson 27 September 2007

Keep young children busy in this beautiful city by visiting Astridpark, on Schaarstraat. There's a great little playpark with slides, swings and sandpits and, next to it, a pretty park with ducks and a bandstand to play in.

If you walk from here through Vismart, depending on the time of day, your children will delight in the fish or toys and crafts on display.

Azay-le-Rideau - chateau and town

Posted by MaxReger 11 September 2007

The chateau and the little town of Azay-le-Rideau are beautiful and justly popular. The chateau is a compact, wedding cake of pale stone, with its many turrets and pinnacles reflected in the moat that surrounds the entire building. It is set in parkland, and there are fine outbuildings, including stables.

There is a good museum shop with mementoes as well as scholarly material. Much of the town centre is pedestrianised and there is a large number of good hotels, restaurants and bars. Parking is plentiful.

The place is usually busy at peak holiday times but it can accommodate large numbers of visitors. Go out of the main season if you want it more or less to yourself.

Azay-le-Rideau is just off the D751, roughly halfway between Chinon and Tours, in the Touraine, France. Chateau Azay-le-Rideau 37190. www.monuments-nationaux.fr

Mehrauli Archaeological Park

Posted by napeed 8 September 2007

Just behind Qutub Minar and off the beaten track. A bit filthy but an absolute treasure house with old tombstones, forts, water bodies.

If you are hungry, look for the 'Royal Dakshin Restaurant' at one of the edges of the park.
If you decide to brave it until night falls then the djinns come out.

Pukekura Park

Posted by hhhh 2 September 2007

If you are in Taranaki (North Island, west coast halfway between Auckland and Wellington) you could do a lot worse than visit Pukekura Park.

It is the most beautiful park I have ever been in, boasting a unique cricket ground in a natural bowl, and the most gorgeous concert venue - the Bowl of Broolands - which, this December, hosts Elton John and has in the past seen gigs by REM and the Pretenders to name but two.

The stage rests at the bottom of a natural bowl and has a large pond in front of it. The park also hosts Womad anually and puts on a free month-long festival, The Festival of Lights from December into January, with local and national bands. A large lake adds to the ambience of New Plymouth's jewel.
