Palle D'Oro

Posted by bearandlion 9 January 2009

Fantastic little restaurant running since 1860 (the whole time with the same family). We had a delicious meal there (pastas around seven euros, salads four, desserts four) and thoroughly enjoyed both the delicious food and the great service and ambience. Highly reccommended.

Tete a l'envers

Posted by johnsannaee 9 January 2009

Lyon may (perhaps justly) lay claim to be France's gastronomic capital but the mountain city of Grenoble has a clutch of fantastic restaurants. Perhaps the best, and certainly the most unusual, is Tete a l'Envers. Located on a dark street near the river and art museum, Tete a l'Envers looks like someone's dining room. With few tables and no concessions made to trendy decor, it is the kind of intimate place you dream of stumbling upon. The friendly proprietor-and-chef cooks only three dishes a day but uses the finest quality ingredients to create a meal you'll never forget. At Tete a l'Envers, you have to get all three courses (it isn't obligatory, but, trust me, you'd be missing out): the starter comes as a sharing platter and varies hugely from day to day. A range of unusual but extremely tasty flavour combinations are presented for your degustation (think small-scale Heston Blumenthal), ranging from curried gnocchi to aubergine chocolate brownies to salad with balsamic vinegar sorbet. Next is the main course, meat or fish with a range of innovatively spiced vegetables; and finally desert - five unusual takes on traditional cakes and puddings, if you can guess the ingredients then you get a free coffee (but in all honesty, it is highly unlikely that you will). This is a meal that should be savoured and may last several hours, accompanied by a stellar wine list and finished with complimentary gourmet rum. It is not the cheapest meal you will ever have but considering what you get it offers absolutely superb value for money.

Rue Chenoise, Grenoble, 38000 Isere, France. Nearest tram stop: Notre Dame-Musée, 30 seconds walk - line B from the main train station.

Cheeseboard Pizza

Posted by johnsannaee 9 January 2009

A short walk from downtown Berkeley and the famous university campus, Cheeseboard might be a trek from the city but the pizza is justly famous throughout the Bay Area. Only serving one kind of pizza per day (and they're all vegetarian), their offerings range from highest-quality Margherita to more out-there combinations such as Blue Cheese and Pear but the pizza is invariably delicious. Served by the (huge) slice, a slice and a drink can be an inexpensive light lunch, or a whole (giant) pizza could be shared by several for a heartier meal.

1512 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley, CA 94709. Nearest BART: Downtown Berkeley.

OUI Fooding

Posted by sophiedupont35 5 January 2009

The OUI has trendy décor, but they forgot the essential thing: the quality of the food.

The wine list was large but most of the wines were not available. I had to ask for four different wines to find one, but the price went up from 30 euros to 60 euros. We asked the waitress for a reduction, and she answered that her boss would think about it.

The food was also bad and the dishes arrived one by one so that the six of us ate almost cold food despite the restaurant being far from full.

When the bill arrived we realised we had received no reduction. The bill was 250 euros for six people (40 euros per person for a main dish and a dessert).

Then the manager started insulting us and told us not to behave like poor people! He raised his voice and pushed us towards the door.

So if you want to be insulted and to eat bad food, go to the OUI. If not, be on your way, there are many other good restaurants in Lille.

Cafe Sydney

It's a restaurant/bar on the fifth floor of the old Customs House (which also includes a library with a scale model of Sydney under a glass floor). It's not that expensive and you get a fantastic panoramic view from the Bridge to the Opera House & beyond.

It's not open that late, however only until about 11pm.

This is a fantastic little French bistro in the relatively unknown neighbourhood of Potrero Hill. Fantastic views reward the climb to the top (or drive), and enjoy perhaps the best burgers in the city, with perfect french frites.

Highway 4 Restaurant

Posted by KatieIOW 5 January 2009

I loved this place, we actually ended up going back a second night. It's really fun, with a good mix of Vietnamese and western people. They serve food that is very different, i.e. you can get local food and if you are crazy you can get scorpion etc. They also have great home made rice wine. Their catfish spring rolls are to die for. It is owned by an English guy who we met on our second night. Lovely place, very relaxed but also different.

It's on Hang Be Street which is on the east of the Old Quarter in Hanoi. Sorry I don't know the exact address.

Kenmarerentals.com

Posted by braydrude 1 January 2009

On our most recent visit (of many) to county Kerry in October 2008, we had a wonderful week’s stay in a house that we found from KenmareRentals.com, prompting us into posting this recommendation. The house was very spacious and comfortable, and offered us a relaxing base from which we could enjoy the town of Kenmare (about two miles away), and explore the various peninsulas on the wild west coast of Ireland. We’re pleased to say the owner could not have been more friendly or helpful and, although the house we rented was just one of many that he runs (as well as a busy pub and guest house in the town), he gave us his full attention for anything we needed, as well as helpful advice when we had to adjust plans after a disrupted ferry service from the UK.

We had chosen a house on a hill not far from Kenmare and enjoyed the fine views across the bay to the mountains of Macgillicuddy’s Reeks. If we had wanted to be closer into town, so that we could walk in each evening more easily, KenmareRentals.com also has houses on the outskirts but, after a substantial pub lunch each day, we were happy to settle into the comfortable house for the autumn evenings to read or watch DVDs with the open fire making it cosy. About 10 minutes walk from the house we rented, the Sailor’s Bar is a great place for a drink, with a warm welcome and local atmosphere. In the town of Kenmare itself, there are plenty of good places to drink and eat, with the house owner’s O’Donnabhain’s having a good buzz, while Davitt’s next door always served great food. Overall, a great week, heartily recommended and we’re sure to return.

Humboldt Stubn

Salzburg is a city of many virtues, but you are unlikely to feel them in your wallet. Which is why finding a spot that is economical while serving up great portions of good food in a central location is a true discovery. Humboldt Stubn is a traditional bar/restaurant just off the main street that offers excellent fare you can wash down with a large glass of beer. The steaktoast is recommended.

Eemaan Kurdish Restaurant

Posted by kelimp 31 December 2008

If you're tired of Italian, Indian, and Chinese restaurants, then this might be just up your street.
Eemaan is a Kurdish restaurant in Newcastle,so when I saw it I felt I just had to try it. The food was delicious and the surroundings friendly. I got an even better surprise when I checked out the bill, which was fabulously value-for-money.
Kurdish food, I found out, is mostly rice and delicious casseroles with fresh naan, washed down with loads of mastow. The Kurdish and middle eastern people drink lashings of this yoghurt drink. If you've still got any room left after the huge portions, try a steaming hot Kurdish tea which they brew in a samovar and a selection of pastries.
This restaurant makes cooking rice an art form, and I loved the yummy naan. If you've never tried Kurdish food before, I wholeheartedly recommend that you do, although a word of warning - as a halal restaurant it does not serve alcohol.

Address: 5 Mill Lane, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Martin Sheffield restaurant

Posted by DinoM 31 December 2008

When in the tiny hippi village on El Bolson in Patagonia, eat at the new yet historically named Martin Sheffield restaurant, which has the kind of cuisine and service that you would be hard pushed to find in any Michelin starred restaurant in London all for just £10.

The restaurant is named after the 19th century explorer from England, Martin Sheffield and is still owned and run by his ancestors.

This place offers some of the most varied meals(it actually does vegetarian food) in all of Argentina and is definately worth a visit if you're nearby. Its unusual, quality and so affordable.

GLO Hotel

Posted by yabez 30 December 2008

I stayed at the GLO in July 2007. I went to Helsinki with my husband for a wedding and most of our friends stayed at the Palace Kamp but we decided to stay at its sister hotel, the GLO. It’s next door to the Palace Kamp so probably the best location in Helsinki. Unlike the Palace Kamp, GLO is a modern hotel and we really liked the room: big room, brand new, very stylish and modern for an extremely reasonable price. Breakfast was also included - a big buffet with plenty of food. There’s a Spanish restaurant in the hotel where you can enjoy tapas.

Coffee Parisien

Don't go to the Coffee Parisien if you're looking for a typical French place. It's a diner where you'll have a good American brunch on weekends. They do great eggs benedict, pancakes and burgers.
Several locations in Paris but I prefer the one in St-Germain.

Le Foundouk

Posted by yabez 29 December 2008

Stylish restaurant with a great mix of Moroccan and European design. A friend of mine booked it for us and we ate on the roof terrace which has great views over Marrakech. There are two menus: one typically Moroccan and the other more fusion International/Moroccan. I had a Moroccan tajine which was extremely tasty.
Reservation is recommended. It's not cheap but it's a romantic place and is also good for small groups.

Crêperie Les Marronniers - Chez Maria

Chez Maria is a great place to eat crepes but it's also known for its raclette. It’s at the bottom of the Chamois lifts in the centre of the village and is decorated with dozens of painted teapots. If there’s a queue, don't give up - the crepes are worth the wait.

L'Alpette

Best for lunch. It’s on the ski slopes but you don’t have to be a skier to get there as the restaurant runs a shuttle service from the top of Rochebrune. Relax by the fireplace or have lunch on the terrace on sunny days. Great food, nice place but not cheap (but you shouldn’t expect anything to be cheap if you’re going to Megève!)
