First constructed in 1866, the Vue Grand is a superb historic hotel in Queenscliff about 90 mins from Melbourne. With very good accommodation in modernised old rooms, the Vue Grand is the place to stay while looking over the sights of Queenscliff or visiting the Historical Museum or discovering the local area of Bellarine. The Vue Grand has a number of cafes and eating areas as well as bars but the highlight is the Grand Dining room.
Just a nice place to stay in provincial Victoria.
One of Australia's best rural restaurants is Athelstane House in the historic maritime village of Queenscliff. The dining experience we had was superb, with amazing food backed up by a very good list of local and regional wines (as well as imports from France etc) and very very good service. Dining can be done in the restaurant or on the balcony or in front of the fire. Athelstane House also provides high class accommodation as well as a very good food store. Athelstane House is the winner of many dining and good food awards. We were impressed.
One of the city's oldest restaurants enthusiastically recommended by the owner of the guesthouse we stayed at. What a treat! A beautiful Georgian townhouse with a wonderful ambience. The food is modern British and delicious. All the food is freshly prepared and locally sourced and the waiting staff are gracious and knowledgeable. They told us all the best places to visit and where we could buy some of the cheeses from their magnificent cheese board.
We loved this special place.
I recently went on holiday to Ibiza and found this amazing secret hideway restaurant called Amante, set on a clifftop overlooking the beach. The staff were really friendly, the location was stunning and the food was outstanding.

This is one of the original fish and chip restaurants in the town. All the people i have spoken to both on holiday and locally, say they are the best they have ever had. The staff are fantastic, it is so clean and the fish and chips are to die for. All this with 10 star views of the harbour, it is a must for anyone visiting St. Ives.

Limon is one of the most amazing and bohemian restaurants in Gumusluk and only about eight minutes walk from the harbour/beach. We booked a few days in advance to reserve our favourite antique sofa in the meadow, from where we sipped cocktails, nibbled on freshly-made stuffed marrow flowers and watched the last few rays of sun. Our food was brought over to the sofa and we stayed there all evening listening to live music and generally feeling at one with nature. Trattoria Anita is a great restaurant in Florence. They have the greatest food and really good prices. The waiters are really nice and funny and make you feel right at home. I go there anytime I'm in Florence and have never felt sorry.

The food is cooked fresh when ordered and there is a wide variety of vegetarian food, which I found limited elsewhere on the island.

This beautiful restaurant, with its airy courtyard and elegantly decorated interior, is by no means a secret. However, I urge you all to sample the wonderful array of very reasonably priced Vietnamese traditional meals on offer. There is even a chance to visit the food stalls where your authentic and delicious meals are prepared and cooked.

This must be one of the very best mountain restaurants, high above the Passo Pordoi, in the great, majestic bulk of the Dolomites. Sass Pordoi is a very well visited mountain top restaurant, viewing station, and walking base for many reasons. First off it is convenient, easily accessed off the major pass of Passo Pordoi that connects the main resort centres of the region. Second, the journey up is by cable alone, one of the truly great cable car ascents. Third, you can walk for miles, take in the sun, or simply sit back and marvel at the glorious views. Fourth, you can simply marvel at the glorious views. Fifth, well, you get the idea. And, while you are there, you can enjoy proper mountain food. Hearty, nourishing, and with a healthy side plate of views. Oh, did I mention the views. So, a simple menu. Convenient drive for starters, followed by a great cable ascent for our fishiest course of the day, hearty fare with a side of glorious views for main, views for dessert, and maybe a chance to drink some views as you relax afterwards. Stunning.
A fairy tale malga (hut for summer pastures) serving delicious rustic fare of fresh eggs and ham from the chickens and pigs who are lucky enough to live in this idyllic spot. There may even be a weekend barbeque if you are lucky. The stupendous peaks of the Croda Rossa tower immediately in front of you and on the slopes of the sheltered col, there is mountain golf, a tree swing and home built trebuchet. Weissbeer or elderflower cordials refresh and sustain you on a walk through a truly astonshing landscape.
Best accessed on the Northern Dolomites walk at the junction of Trails 28, 3 & 4. Alternatively accessed by bus from Brunico - Monguelo - Villabassa or Lago di Braies to the Hotel Ponticello then trails 18 & No.3. If you don't like steep ascents then getting the shuttle bus up to Prato Piazza might be an alternative.
It's at 3842 metres in the cable car station at the top of the Aiguille du Midi. Advertised as the highest Savoyard restaurant in the Alps (I'm guessing it's the highest in the whole world!) The food is good and the views of Mont Blanc and the Chamonix Aiguilles are fantastic. You basically get a real taste (albeit very much a lite version) of the experience of high-altitude mountaineering. The downside is that it costs 41 euros to get up there.
Fighting cows, stunning views, and huge wedges of homemade cake make this homely alp herdsman's dairy farm turned walkers refuge unmissable. Nestling 2000m up on summer alpine pastures above the Rhone on the Tour de Mont Blanc, Bovine route, the refuge offers great meals, giant bowls of hot chocolate or coffee, and those cakes. You can even stay in the simple dortoir accomodation if the walk up was all too much. Swiss Valais fighting cows are the serious celebities here with pride of place for the Reine des Reines champion adorned with a huge traditional cow bell and giant floral headress. The heats of this sumo style pushing contest are on the alps, with the final down in Martigny in the valley. Photos of past champions adorn the farmhouse kitchen, and the young pretenders are in the fields.

There are so many good reasons to visit this alpine restaurant it's hard to choose one for the top of the list. For me it was the summer journey from Interlaken, through the 'valley of seven waterfalls' and up the 10,000 foot mountain on a series of trains, funiculars and cable cars, each with a view wider and brighter than the last. There are plenty of places to get off and use your legs, but I enoyed the ride so much that my walking boots never hit the path.
The Piz Gloria restaurant sits at the top, revolving gently through 360 degrees, so your mouthfuls of rosti, buttery pastries and coffee are interrupted by gasps and gulps as the gleaming peaks of two hundred mountains are rolled out before you.
If you're there early enough, you can even have a 007 buffet breakfast - this was the baddie's lair in the film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.
Perched on a mountainside watching over the tyrolean village of Alpbach and facing across to the slopes of the Wiedesbernhorn, the Rossmoos is best approached via horse drawn sleigh from the village. The Rossmoos is a charming and wonderful reminder of Austrian hospitality and unpretentious enjoyment. My vegetarian daughter and wife, suffer the stuffed mountain mammals and birds positioned around this home from home, but for the whole family this is an annual pilgrimage that never disappoints.The food and ambience are mutually excellent and even the ageing accordian accompaniment feels just right. Having been warmed throughout and fit to burst, you return to Alpbach by sleigh, stargazing a cloudless night sky.
This is a fantastic refuge with a great views of Mont Blanc, at 2352m, a few hours uphill climb from Chamonix. What makes it so great is the food. Their speciality is long cooked Pig's Cheeks, marinated in wine overnight and then slowly braised throughout the day with herbs, garlic and more wine. Served with immaculate roast potatoes it's the perfect fare after a long hard day's mountain walking. And their huge chunks of rustic mountain cheese are worth the visit alone, not to mention their red wine and deserts.

Woodapple is in Hampton and gets its name from a strange Sri Lankan fruit of the same name (the fruit being hard skinned like a coconut but with an inner pulp like apple and berry pie filling according to our host)
So Woodapple serves Sri Lankan cuisine and does so superbly. There is a reasonable list of entrees but for mains the best choice is the hoppers (bowlshaped rice flour pancakes) filled with your choice of whatever curries are on the constantly changing menus. These are fantastic and come with some amazing chutneys. The coconut roti (bread) is also great. One thing we noticed is that vegetarians are well catered for with a surprisingly good choice of authentic dishes. The service was good, done by the either the lady owner and/or the chef.
Best of all, the prices are very nice and there is no corkage if you bring your own drinks.
