This cafe in Mohandeseen area has very good Egyptian food. The atmosphere is warm and decor upbeat and attractive.

You MUST meet the owner, Mahmoud. He is very colourful and has a great sense of humour. He makes you feel like a long lost brother. Enjoy!

A chic and, in terms of British prices, good value restaurant on the banks of the Vltava where you can watch the passing tourist boats and the crowds on Charles Bridge. There are plenty of river-view tables. Specialises in fish but also has other dishes and limited vegetarian menu. Approx £50 for 3 course meal with drinks.

Surely the best restaurant in Avignon. A couple of set menus at around 65€, including the famous tomatoes in every course, plus a 'surprise' menu for around 115€ - one of the highest quality meals I've ever eaten. An ideal place for a very special meal.

An excellent restaurant, in a very upmarket hotel. High quality food, with two set menus apart from the à la carte.

Beware: the 33€ menu is only available at lunch (and then not on what has been charmingly mistranslated as 'off days', ie public holidays). Otherwise, the menu costs 105€, but is well worth the price.

A delightful garden for eating outside, looking at the back of the Palais des Papes. Must book.

Great food, lovely service, charming village. French husband and English wife own and run this little restaurant (he is the chef - with 25 years experience behind him, she is front of house) tucked away in the southern tip of Normandy. Now listed in numerous guides and getting more and more popular.

Lovely family-run restaurant in residential area just off Les Halles. We had a fantastic meal - the mussels in Roquefort and the pudding, some raspberry creamy dish, were brilliant. The whole family seem to work there, it's very relaxed and the bill was around a ridiculous 12 euros a head.

Try the Scheltema Brasserie on Rue des Dominicains (Tel: 02 512 20 84). Do not be fooled by its location at the end of Rue des Bouchers, close to the Grand Place, which is home to dozens of tourist restaurants with quick-eyed maitre'ds hustling for custom on the pavement.

To enter Scheltema is to step into a place where food is to be savoured, not rushed. Serious-looking, but kindly and knowledgeable waiters (all male and of a certain age), add to the experience. Truly wonderful.

For a relaxed meal and/or drink on a summer's evening, try Place St Boniface, close to Porte de Namur metro station. There are many good restaurants in the square and the surrounding streets.

Try Au Vieux Bruxelles for traditional Belgian cuisine in (sometimes very!) cosy surroundings or Mano a Mano for simple, high-quality Italian food. L'Ultime Atome is a great choice for a drink, with a good range of beers and outside tables; it also does decent, brasserie-style food if you're peckish.

Try eating at La Quincaillerie, a typically fine restuarant in the city, but with a novel twist: it's a converted hardware store. The food is of high quality and, unusually for me, I can recall the unique interior in surprising detail.

Cafe Latte is not a drink, it's a nice little Italian restaurant in swanky Toorak. Great pasta dishes (mainly southern Italian style), nice wine list, central bar and a fantastic atmosphere make this a place 'to eat out' at.

Whilst Hoi An felt a bit like a Disneyfied version of Vietnam to us, there is a restaurant on the waterfront which did the best vegetarian food we ate in the whole of VN.

Cafe des Amis serves a set meal each evening (I forget how many courses). The only choice is seafood or veggie and it is utterly delicious food. If you are veggie, you'll be sick of spring rolls and stir-fried greens by the time you get to Hoi An, and Cafe des Amis will provide some very welcome and tasty variety.

You must visit Kong restaurant in Paris. It's on the roof of the old Samaritaine department store on the rue de Rivoli.

With its glass domed roof you get the most spectacular views of Paris and there's a great bar on the floor below which is full of Parisian fashionistas.

As a tip you need to ask to be seated on the upper floor to get the best views. For a chic spring/summer afternoon, stroll around the Place des Vosges in the Marais district (Metro St Paul)and enjoy the eclectic boutiques in the surrounding streets. The department store is closed until 2011 but the Kong restaurant remains open.

A wonderful little restaurant full of locals, tucked away in a tiny alley by the Centre Pompidou. The food served was fantastic and, being vegetarian, I was really impressed. A chocolate dessert to die for and a great ambience.
