Indigo

Posted by Mickhud 10 July 2008

Indigo is a restaurant, formerly Maria's, in the New Market in Rhodes Town. It is adorned with billowing drapes so you feel as though you are eating in a tent. The food is wonderful, the service discreet and pleasant - no touting - and the wine is excellent. Despite all this, it is not expensive and offers great value for money.

Café de Paris

Posted by Sintra 26 June 2008

Café de Paris is situated in the historic centre of Sintra Vila with fine views of the National Palace. A beautiful 19th century building built in the classical Parisian café style, covered in blue tiles. You have the choice of dining on the balcony, the terrace or the beautiful French style interior decorated with painted murals.

The café offers excellent Portuguese cuisine with a French flavour. After a long walk to the palace and castle on the hill spend the afternoon relaxing here with a bottle of Borba red wine.

Fatal Restaurant

Posted by GavinCollins 3 June 2008

Fatal actually means wooden plate in Hungarian but the portions may well prove life-threatening.

Located in Pest off the Vaci Utca, the restaurant is easy to find, cheap and offers huge traditional meals, mostly cooked and served in the dish dish, atop of a wooden plate.

I had the pork knuckle and only got halfway - highly recommended but book in advance if you're going in the evening.

Address: 1056 Budapest, Vaci utca 67.

Roata Restaurant

Posted by sladescross 6 April 2008

Friendly and cheap local restaurant. The chicken soup was brilliant. And the wraps of meat with polenta for a main dish were not too bad as well. And with a bottle of beer the whole thing came to less than 40 lei.

Jalons Bridewell

Posted by princessfrances 31 March 2008

An amazing bar and restaurant off Duke Street in Liverpool city centre, it's a former Victorian jail which makes for a very unusual setting to eat.

Despite its former use, the venue is incredibly stylish and cosy and you can still eat in the cells as well as in an elegant dining area upstairs where's there's also a champagne lounge. Food is fab and service is very good. Also very reasonably priced especially with the set meal on a weekday.

Campbell Square off Duke Street, Liverpool 0151 709 4195. Nearest train station is Liverpool Central. The restaurant can be walked to from the city centre along Hanover Street walking towards the Albert Dock. Perfect if you're going for a gig at the Arena!

Poeme

Poeme is one of Bucharest's best restaurants, actually located in the Carol Parc Hotel.

International cuisine, excellent service, but moreover an excellent 'de luxe' atmosphere.

Cafe des Artistes

Posted by DannyBryant 24 January 2008

What a find in the backstreets of Ubud. Belgian owned and very professional. Eat inside in the Wantilan, or where we preferred to sit every night, outside in the garden courtyard. Mainly European food, simple but well prepared and presented. Staff are wonderful, pleasant friendly Balinese. On average we spent 20 pounds for two main courses and one half litre of wine. Always full and need reservation for dinner.

Sarands

Posted by ismith 13 December 2007

Another nice little find in my local neighbourhood... Sarands presents a Mediterranean-based menu of seafood or meat dishes. The restaurant itself is light and airy (with an upstairs private dining area for functions), service is pleasant, the wine list small but well chosen and the (mains) servings huge. The prices are reasonable too. Coffee is excellent.

La Colombeat Constantia Uitsig

Posted by Louise_ 2 November 2007

La Colombeat Constantia Uitsig wine estate is now 50% owned by a black empowerment co-operative. The French style food at La Colombe was of a high standard – 'jalousie de langoustines' anyone? - with excellent service on a garden terrace by the vineyards. There is another restaurant (The Constantia Uitsig) overlooking the vineyards and a more informal restaurant (the River Café) in the courtyard behind the wine shop – noisy when we were there because of ‘the ladies who lunch’.

The Spice of Life

Posted by londonite 31 October 2007

This pub, halfway between Leicester Square and Tottenham Court Road tube stations, is brilliant. As well as a good range of drinks and a yummy menu, it offers loads of live music events all week (from open mic nights to unsigned indie bands and old-time jazz).

Thanks to a new refurbishment the Spice now looks like a slightly garish, eccentric Highland mansion, and it's extra-cosy for sinking winter pints. And best of all the pub's attractions? Three words: Sticky. Toffee. Pudding.

Pri Yafata, just off of Bul Vitosha

Posted by travelworn 11 September 2007

A group of friends and I decided this June to take a trip to Sofia, probably one of the best decisions of the year.

Pri Yafata is a traditional Bulgarian restaurant, complete with live music, decoration and a vast menu. The food is also very reasonably priced.

This place is also the top recommendation by Lonely Planet and quite rightly so! If you're in Sofia, it's certainly worth a visit.

East to find, just off of the Blvd Vitosha and a short walk east of Makedonia Square. The Lonely Planet guide book gives the best directions as do most hostels and hotels who will no doubt have heard of it!

Perfect accomodation in Bol

Posted by RickyM 10 September 2007

It’s a perfect apartment block/hostel.

Boris, the owner, is really friendly and will meet you from the ferry port. He will happily tell you the best beaches, restaurants, etc. He will also sell you wine grown locally by his family. I bought three litres (it worked out at only about 75p a bottle!) and as he will tell you, it doesn’t taste too hot until the second glass, but then it's actually really nice.

The personal touch in these apartments is really welcomed. Boris seemed to be into providing value for money, and a pleasant experience to the traveler, and not making massive profits.

I went in September 2007 and he was in the process of refurbishing the entire building to a very high standard. The rooms are large, clean, and most look out to the garden that has limes, pomegranetes, oranges, olives etc. He was also about to put in a terraced BBQ in the garden with seating area among the fruit trees.

The apartment's location is about a 5-10 minute walk from the town, and 15 minutes' walk in the other direction to the Zlatni Rat beach (the one in the brochures).

If he suggests you go to a restaurant called Mendula - GO THERE! It’s really romantic, cheapish, and the custom is for the waiter to offer everyone a free drink after your meal. They also have a help yourself salad bar that is free when you order almost everything on the menu. (Be warned though; it’s a bastard to find so get Boris to draw you a map!)

Sheesh Mahal

Posted by RicAllen 7 September 2007

The Sheesh Mahal on Kirkstall Road always manages to amaze me with both the quality of the food and service on offer. Azram, the owner, is always serving and chatting with his regulars, and nothing is too much trouble for him, whether it is explaining the history behind dishes on the menu, or providing cake and a free bottle of wine for a friend's birthday.

There are many very, very good curry houses in Leeds and Bradford, but the Sheesh manages to serve food that's up there with the best. The service always tips the scales in the Sheesh's direction though.

Key dishes to try include the prawn puri starter, and either the fish balti or sheesh gosht karahi with a side order of cauliflower and aubergine. I've tried most of the menu and have yet to have a bad meal there.

Coriander

This is worth the trip out of town and out of Didsbury or Chorlton. Amazing, healthy (well, as healthy as a curry could be) and good value. Great service, always willing to give advice on what's best and wine to go with it. A real gem!

I agree that curry mile isn't worth it unless you're very inebriated and after the experience of the location, rather than the taste of the curry.

The Laguna

Posted by SuntoryBoss 6 September 2007

It's an Indian restaurant rather than a curry house, if that makes any sense.

The food is just fantastic - a million miles from the generic curry sauce used on different ingredients that so many places churn out. Fantastic food, good prices, good portions, friendly staff.

It's the best Indian food I've had outside of India, and since moving away from Nottingham I've really missed it. Despite hunting high and low in Bristol, where I am now, I've not yet found anywhere near its equal.

Asithane Restaurant

In the basement of the Kariye Hotel, spilling into the secluded garden. It is not cheap, but it is a perfect, civilised place for lunch before/after visiting the delights of the Kariye Mosque (St Saviour Church) museum and a modest lunch of mezze will not cost you a fortune.
